The Telegraph has now published its Lib Dem MPs' expenses revelations. At first glance, my initial reaction is... phew: compared to the Labour and Tory abuses covered in previous days it looks like the Lib Dem expense claims are - relatively speaking - minor. Of course, I realise that's not entirely the point - to have ill-advisedly claimed even the most minor items brings the system and Parliament into disrepute, allowing the media and our opponents to say we're all the same. And as Hywel notes in an LDV comment thread below, '"Not as corrupt as other MPs" just isn't ...

"It is available for you to download online" If I'm paying for it, then I insist on receiving a copy. After a week of dredging the Telegraph has dug up a corby trouser press, scatter cushions, a leather rocking chair and the tenuous claim against Andrew George who let his student daughter use his second home as an occasional 'bolt hole'. So, the Lib Dem day of reckoning is here, and nobody seems quite sure how to react. Jeremy Paxman has just delivered himself of the opinion that some of it is "pretty small beer", Alix isn't happy, Mark Littlewood thinks it's all going to be OK, and we await Nick's reaction. What strikes me about the Telegraph story, though, is that they lead on Andrew George's daughter using his flat, when they claim to have accusations to make against Nick Clegg, surely the highest profile target. Not long back from a lengthy but very useful West End Community Council meeting. Discussions included the West End schools issue, recycling and Fibrecity. A lengthy series of city council meetings last night too - particularly in respect of the schools issue. As I have an early start to go to Grangemouth with the 'day job' tomorrow, I'll be doing a detailed update later this week.

Let me see. The Telegraph fingers Andrew George, Nick Clegg, Menzies Campbell, Chris Huhne, Lembit Opik and Julia Goldsworthy. Lembit, it seems: charged taxpayers for a £40 court summons he received for the non-payment of his council tax. He will refund it.Bless.

There's no denying the fact that Keighley has traffic problems. One idea that Keighley Town Council and the Joint Keighley and Worth Valley Transport Group has been pursuing in partnership with Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is to run weekday commuter trains on the Worth Valley line, in addition to KWVR's vintage trains at weekends. I think this is an excellent idea. Lots of people have put a lot of work into it for quite a long time now. I really hope that spanners are not thrown into the works by the groups that have the power to give it ...

The expenses scandal, it seems, will be with us for some time yet - however now that my blog has recovered from the exceptionally high number of visitors it has received over the past week, I'm taking the opportunity to catch up. Back in July of last year, The Liberal Democrats led by Nick Clegg, tried to change the rules for MP expenses - including voting for the use of tougher independent audit of MP's expenses and a more accountable system. Introducing independent scrutiny of MP's expenses wasn't well received by the other parties and the vote was defeated by ...

Time to sack the Speaker

The Guardian website is reporting that the Speaker of the House of Commons is facing a no confidence motion following his woeful and disgraceful performance yesterday. Michael Martin used his statement to censure a number of MPs who attempted to speak out against his handling of the row over parliamentary expenses and allowances: Martin initially advised in a statement MPs consider "the spirit of what is right" when claiming expenses. He then turned on Kate Hoey, Labour MP for Vauxhall, who questioned the decision of Commons authorities to call in the police to investigate leaking to the Daily Telegraph. Waving his ...

I was delighted to have been invited to address a meeting of Bury Branch of the Unite (formerly TGWU) Union yesterday. I used the opportunity to highlight my concerns about the impact the Councils potentially over zealous use of RIPA powers (the so-called snoopers charter). In particular the damage done to morale and the potential damge to public confidence. Specifically I outlined that I have written to the Chief Executive and Leader of the Council calling for a review of the powers used by Bury and for democratic accountability and independent checks to be introduced into the process. Today's launch of the Lib Dem European Election Campaign was feisty and upbeat. We set out the dangers of isolating Britain from our European neighbours. Nick Clegg, Andrew Duff and Sarah Ludford were on top form, confidently setting out why a Tory vote would be a wasted vote in the European Elections. Their decision to cut themselves off from the mainstream of European politics by leaving the EPP group means they will have little say in the future direction of Europe. The trio also set out why the Conservative isolation policies would make Britain a less safe place to live. ...
