In case you hadn't guessed – it's me!
ITV News reports: The long-awaited and potentially explosive report on phone hacking from the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee is due tomorrow morning. MPs had their last meeting this morning to sign off the report and ITV News can reveal some of the findings. MPs are set to find Colin Myler, Tom Crone and Les Hinton guilty of misleading the committee and therefore Parliament.
After a week of diarrhoea, which came to an end yesterday, I was asked to visit haematology outpatients this morning for a checkup. A blood test showed that platelets were down to 434, within normal range for the first time, but haemoglobin was down to 9.1. The dose of hydroxycarbamide is being maintained pending another blood test next Monday. Evidently its going to be difficult to keep both within tolerable limits and I imagine the time will come when other methods such as a transfusion will have to be adopted. To the House at quarter to one, where the new ...
Well done to The Citizen from Gloucester: Tributes paid to "voice of cheese rolling" Richard Jefferies
This is rather a good Eighth Doctor novel, with the Doctor and the steadily improving Compassion trying to navigate a military regime which is better realised than most of the many such regimes in Who books, while Fitz (who I think is actually in more individual stories, taken across all media, than any other companion), having got separated off, settles into an ambiguous and ultimately dangerous utopia. Some of the ideas here seem to be drawn from The Matrix, though I'm not sure if the timing works out (the film came out in 1999; this book was published in 2000 ...
Another of the recent Big Finish Companion Chronicles, this time reuniting Fraser Hines as Jamie McCrimmon and Anneke Wills as Polly Wright, with Hines doing most of the other voices including the Second Doctor and Jamie. It's a fairly routine romp of a futuristic bank being raided by aliens, a concept recently done much better in Naomi Alderman's Eleventh Doctor novel Borrowed Time, but it's fun anyway. I have a feeling that the story of the Second Doctor encountering the shark-like Selachians here isn't quite consistent with that in the two novels which feature them, but as they are all ...
I picked this up when I went to the Charles Burns exhibition in Leuven last month, struck by its front cover which is a direct homage to one of Hergé's Tintin albums, The Shooting Star. The story here is completely different, though, as young Doug wakes up in a nightmare world of strange and slightly horrible people; we get flashbacks to his "normal" life in our world which may or may not explain what has provoked his dreams, if they are dreams; and then a big reveal in the last frame shakes some sense into Doug's new world, and prepares ...
Chorlton Lib Dem candidate Matt Gallagher has slammed the Council for failing to protect visually impaired pedestrians. Last Autumn Matt raised concerns about the tactile paving which helps visually impaired pedestrians to safely cross Keppel Road. The paving had been laid in such a way as to direct pedestrians into the middle of the busy junction with Brantingham Road (see top picture). Last October the Council admitted the paving had been incorrectly laid over six years before and promised to rectify the problem within 30 days. Six Months on the Council had still not fixed the problem. Thankfully after Matt ...
Today I have been knocking on doors in Chiswick. It isn't the sort of area you would expect to get huge support for Ken but clearly when a significant share of Labour voters I speak to say they are not voting for Ken it looks like he won't become the Mayor of London. Support for Ken Livingstone is waning and more and more Londoners cannot bring themselves to vote for a candidate that has a real credibility problem. Liberal Democrat Caroline Pigeon and Brian Paddick, along with their energetic and diverse team of London Assembly candidates, can offer real change ...

In times like these, deciding who will run your council is more important than ever. Who will look after your money? Who will make scarce resources go further? Labour councils have been spending millions on cars, redesigning their own plush offices and even suggesting a wine terrace. Labour councillors in Hull spent £8,000 on a new silverware cabinet! Read more about Labour's abysmal record of council spending here. We need councillors who spend money wisely. And the Conservatives are no better! In Cambridgeshire they gave themselves a 19% pay rise, in Hammersmith and Fulham they spent £7,000 on a leaving ...
Spring, like autumn, is a time of change, of transition, of movement. For birdwatchers in temperate or arctic lands, it's a time of looking out for new summer visitors and passage migrants. By contrast the last of some wintering species goes hardly noticed - after all, you never know for sure it's the last, whereas that Swallow is definitely your first for six months. In Finland, the arrival of the Cranes is eagerly awaited by people with only the most asual interest in wildlife. They are spectacular birds, of course, and can be seen flying over urban areas. In Britain ...
Once again, we see the wit of David Cameron, as sharp as a bag of wet mice. He adds "time to get your pension grandpa" (sort of) to his previous "dinosaur" attempted quip, about 80 year old Dennis Skinner Not funny. Not clever. Ageist. Sir Peter Tapsell is 82. [IMG: Post to Twitter] Tweet This Post
The Daily Telegraph website suggests the government may be planning to smuggle through measures to increase Internet surveillance by incorporating them into a bill to set up the new National Crime Agency.in the Queen's Speech. Tom Brake is quoted by the paper as opposing this move: There are only a certain number of slots for new laws but we need this to be something that is debatable and improvable on its own terms, not part of something that has broad support like the National Crime Agency. The laws in this area are already too weak to protect individual privacy, and ...
David Cameron, it became clear today, was not impressed by Commons Speaker John Bercow's decision to grant Labour leader Ed Miliband an urgent question on the subject of Jeremy Hunt's hanging-by-a-thread career as culture secretary. His not-impressedness manifested itself as indignant anger — it was "spectacularly ill-judged" according to the Telegraph's Iain Martin: From the off Cameron's approach was wince-inducingly ill-judged. He rushed his statement and sounded steadily more touchy as he got deeper into it, lashing out and even shouting at one point about Charlie Whelan. It wasn't very Prime Ministerial. Mr Cameron has faced particular stick for his ...
Please see below for a very effective piece of political messaging from London Liberal Democrats. I agree. Brian Paddick would make a very good mayor - better than any other candidate who is standing. You can give your first preference to Brian, while giving your second preference to Johnson or Livingstone if you are very keen to stop one of those two men from beating the other, ie if you 'hate' Boris or 'hate' Ken. A first preference for Brian will not let Ken in or let Boris in, as you can use your second preference vote to deal with ...
From today's Times (£): The string of problems hitting the Tories could save the Liberal Democrats from a catastrophic meltdown in this Thursday's local elections, party chiefs claimed yesterday. The Lib Dems are still expecting to lose up to half their 650 council seats in England and Wales as voters continue to blame Nick Clegg for joining the coalition. They could do even worse in Scottish local elections. But Gerald Vernon-Jackson, leader of Liberal Democrat councillors in England and Wales, said that in the past two weeks there had been signs on the doorstep that voters were blaming the coalition's ...
Someone in the office you want to kill? Aggresso-therapist Dr Jaeger offers a harmless way to relieve your frustrations. What could possibly go wrong? The Avengers - My Wildest Dream gives you The Manchurian Capitalist, a disorientating, violent thriller of board members killing each other in dreams, all witnessed by Steed and Tara. Guest stars include Peter Vaughan, Edward Fox, John Savident and the mighty Philip Madoc, who sadly died last month, as did stylish director Robert Fuest, who gives the episode real (or is it hallucinatory?) punch: dizzyingly shifting points of view; stunning fight sequences; showing off striking sets... ...
There is only one meeting scheduled for Blyth Town Council this week Thursday 3rd May, 6pm at Ebor House, Blyth -- Planning and Development Committee

Iris Walker came to the first training session we had for Council candidates last Summer and I immediately thought she was brilliant. Full of enthusiasm, keen to learn and put into practice what she was told and totally embedded in her local community in Westhill, Aberdeenshire, she's a dream candidate. She, along with people like William Sell from Aberdeen, Allan MacBain and Nicola Prigg from Ayrshire, George Boyd in Midlothian, Kate Stephen from Inverness and Craig Duncan in Dundee, is part of an impressive new generation of talented people who will hopefully be Liberal Democrat Councillors come Friday lunchtime. Iris ...
A few days ago I was speaking at a Financial Literacy conference in Orlando. One of the most interesting contributions came from Chase Card Services - their research had found that "consumers are more optimistic and spending more". This where the President has taken the view that investment in growth rather than tackling the deficit is the priority, in stark contrast to "Austerity Britain". So I am delighted that today Ed Randall has written this thought provoking piece for Liberal Left responding to the double dip recession, as he points out: "It isn't any longer good enough to complain that ...
I will be voting Yes in Thursday's referendum on whether Bristol should have a directly elected Mayor. The debate over the last few months has persuaded me that Bristol will have a stronger voice both in London and on the international stage if a Mayor acts as our ambassador. It is that outward facing role ...
***** How do you pull together a group of disparate super-heroes and their super-heavy emotional baggage in one movie and make it watchable? It is the thought that intrigued me most about the new Marvel Avengers movies. How can you cram them all into 1hr. 42mins and still make a fast-paced action movie? Especially as some characters, notably Black Widow and Hawkeye are not well known to a mass audience. Director Joss Whedon has managed the feat very well, giving each superhero just enough back-plot and cameo to flesh out a plot revolving around Tom Hiddleston's beautiful bad boy antihero ...
This section of ALDC's 2012 Local Elections Results Service tracks the outcome of each contested seat on the night. Most of these amount to one-third of the total number of council seats, although a number of District Councils elect 'by-halves'. Councils with their names highlighted in red are having 'all-out' elections after boundary changes and will resume their normal electoral cycles from 2014. At a Glance: Seat Results: Change in Seats: Explanatory Note: Because of the way that Change in Seats statistics are calculated (see 'In Detail - Seat Changes, below), the at-a-glance aggregate will only be correct when ...
Sarah Ludford MEP writes... Deal on transfer of passenger data to the US was least worst option
The transfer to the US of EU travellers' Passenger Name Record (PNR) data - the information we give the airline for booking purposes – has been happening for over a decade. MEPs including me have been battling since then to control the terms on which that transfer takes place in order to build in adequate data protection, and we have secured considerable improvements. It is important to recall that the US has a sovereign right to impose whatever conditions it wishes on airlines and passengers entering its territory and to refuse entry, or landing rights to planes, if those conditions ...
This month saw the introduction for local residents of the new 101 all non-emergency number for Cambridgeshire Police. According to the local police, "The old number has remained in use alongside 101 for the past year to allow people time to get used to the new number. "For the first time, everyone calling the police for non-emergency matters will know exactly how much it will cost them and it will be the same no matter what time of day or the duration of the call. "The number change is part of a national scheme to make 101 the single non-emergency ...
After 30 meetings of the Joint Committee scrutinising the Government's House of Lords Reform draft bill – and long sessions of assertion and deliberation - I confess I have been somewhat exhausted. However, I must record one extremely important - and positive - lesson. Every one of the Joint Committees on which I have served, as an MP and latterly as a Peer, has been an eye-opener. I have learnt so much about the other House, and witnessed the evolution of a consensus as other Members better appreciated the circumstances in which we all had to operate, in the interests ...
The Beeb reports that the Public and Commercial Services Union has attacked the creation of a mutually owned body to oversee civil service pensions. They called it 'privatisation'. Given the Labour Party is riddled with this one-eyed statist attitude - that anything other than centralised state control is privatisation - it is hardly surprising. But one can only wonder why the cooperative movement - one of the driving forces in the creation of the party and still a significant contributor to this day - still attach their flag to Labour's mast when mutualism and worker control (as we are seeing ...
A few days ago I gave an interview at Salford University where I was asked my views about community policing in Salford. A four and a half minute extract of the interview edited by Kat Middleton is below where I talk about how well our local neighbourhood policing team are doing and how they can improve. The interview briefly touched on the council's partnership with Greater Manchester Police and I explained how the council could be doing more to promote anti-crime initiatives. Watch, comment or ask questions below the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOOhxjCp7SA
It was 1986 when Cecil Parkinson, Courtier of Queen Margaret of Finchley, started the de-regulation of UK Financial Services. Was it pure co-incidence that for most of the 20th century to that point the return on bank equity rose broadly in line with the growth of the UK economy [about 2%p.a.] but between 1986 & 2006 that return shot up to an annual average of 16%? I don't think so. Freed from constraint, & with the opportunity to make obscene levels of personal wealth for those at the top of the pile, the banks simply started to play roulette. Bankers ...
ALDC will again provide an election results service showing the total number of seats won for each party by council and the change in those seats whether that's plus or minus. You can find our Election Results Service in the Local Elections section of our website. We largely collate this information by using council websites as they usually publish the results as they happen, although this is by no means consistent. The counts are also split between Thursday night and anytime on Friday until well in to the evening. However, if you are able to help us out with information ...
It's Saturday afternoon(*) and I've just completed the 6.002x midterm exam. In total, there were five multi-part questions, covering some basic circuit analysis (Q1), Thevenin and Norton circuits (Q2), a common gate MOSFET amplifier (Q3), a logic circuit consisting of a couple of inverters and a NOR gate (Q4) and a diode circuit (Q5). Q1 – which involved finding a couple of node voltages and the power drops over resistors in the circuit, Q2 and Q5 were straightforward, although I confess it took me three attempts to get the Norton current right for Q2 (even though I managed to get ...
Peter Hain was very vocal a few weeks ago condemning the Tories for fielding candidates who had been caught out posting unacceptable comments on social network sites. He even went as far as to produce a "Welsh Conservative Candidates of Shame" saying: "It speaks volumes that despite some pretty vile behaviour these candidates have been allowed to stand for the Tories once again." He went on: "These are not just a few candidates on the periphery of the party wings, but individuals close to the leadership of Cheryl Gillan and Andrew RT Davies. David Cameron has spent years trying to ...
As we go into the last few days before widespread elections, what better time to highlight what Lib Dems do best? Yes, pointing at things. Well done to LibDems who point at things for a providing a comprehensive and voluminous collection of pointy photos. Why, they've even crowned a certain Dr. Mark Pack as King of the Pointies!

This is another part of my series of posts about my friends who are standing for election this week. I've known Peter Barrett who's standing in the Perth City Centre ward pretty much since I came back to Scotland. Despite the fact that he spends most of our interactions taking the mickey out of me, I have a lot of time for him. Maybe it's because he reminds me a little bit of my Dad 20 years ago, I don't know. I've known him as a hard-working councillor, Scottish Party Campaigns Officer, boss and election agent and he has been ...

Below is an email I was copied into out of the blue from someone. Basically, anyone accused of anything, ...
Devoted readers will recall that I previously used this blog to announce to the world that I had voted by post (for the Liberal Democrats) in the 2012 London Mayoral and Assembly Election. In an exciting development, I can now inform you all (several days on) that I have actually now posted my ballot papers, rather than leaving them sat, completed, in an envelope on a chair in the drawing room of my flat. As a committed student of political science, I know enough about elections to know that postal ballots do actually have to be posted back if they ...
This is the first in a short series of posts in which I'll be temporarily putting aside my mantle of tribal Liberal Democrat and indulging my inner strategist and offer my outside view on the states of the other parties. I'll start with the official opposition currently leading in the polls. 1. Don't take victory for granted I can well imagine that for a long term Labour supporter, watching this Coalition government finding its feet, implementing deeply unpopular cuts and staggering from scandal to scandal, it would be easy to imagine that the next election, or at least the one ...
After the drama (well when I say drama I mean a few people on twitter thinking that a defection from the Tories to UKIP is the beginning of the end of the Conservative Party as we know it – and then there was a question whether the defector was even a member of the Conservative Party anyway) there was more drama this morning when Tristan Pithers defected from Labour to the Lib Dems – cue much rejoicing on my timeline (probably – he defected a good couple of hours before I woke up) but at least he has written why ...
You cannot fail to have noticed that in most American films and TV shows, all the phone numbers start 555. This is a reserved number in the North American Numbering Plan. It means that it's a number which will never connect to a real person or service. So you can avoid the situation where a number is spoken on a show, or in a song, and everyone tries to call it – much to the annoyance of the owner of the number. That's the US – did you know the UK also has a similar set of reserved numbers? OfCom ...
A joint initiative has been launched by Cambridgeshire County Council and the police to improve school attendance in the Fenland area. The truancy sweeps - which will focus on Chatteris, March and the surrounding villages - will also aim to promote child safety by emphasising the importance of making sure children are in school. All children of compulsory school age will be stopped even if they are accompanied by parents, carers or relatives and live outside the targeted areas. Parents or carers of truanting pupils will then be contacted by an Educational Welfare Officer and notified of the Education Welfare ...
[IMG: the weather this week in Manchester] Everybody I know who is working on the campaign is already shattered and many will be behind on their campaign schedules after the weekend's dreadful weather. But the weather seems to be improving so let's keep going and try to spread the load. In many places turnout will be key. We need to focus on getting our vote out, the turnout of theirs is largely beyond our control. We've got 4 more days to make 4 years of hard work count - it's votes in the ballot box that matter. So look at ...

The great tradition in the US of the President making a very funny and risque speech at the White House Correspondent's dinner was upheld in fine style on Saturday evening. It's worth watching (embedded below). And the perfect excuse for me to put up my favourite ever such speech - which, unlikely as it may seem, was made from George W Bush... who could certainly laugh at himself. Obama 2012 Bush 2007 - starts slow, but then from 45 seconds in...
Coming after several weeks of self-inflicted damage, the news that the UK economy has gone back into recession risks further undermining public confidence in the Government's ability to deal with the problems the country faces. Nick Clegg says the principles of the coalition's economic strategy remain sound - repairing the public finances, reforming the financial system and rebalancing the economy - and I agree. The problem is that we are only making progress on the first one of these principles under the Osborne-Alexander treasury team and we don't have a clear vision for what's next. We need to change course, ...

Willie Rennie has been all over Scotland over not just the past four weeks, but ever since he was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats last May. His motivation and enthusiasm has been a fantastic support to activists everywhere. In the last month alone, he has supported 47 campaigns in 18 Council areas from the Borders to the Highlands. As the campaign nears its close, he's been talking about the Party's record in local Government, where we're in administration in 13 authorities, more than any other party. He said: Together with our excellent candidates I have been listening. We've been ...
This week the 200m2 Edgware Road Bakerloo line Green Wall has finally settled in and looks fab. It was planted last November by Transport for London being funded by £5M Department of Transport. It's part of a London trial to re-prove the already well known peer reviewed research that vegetation help remove PM10 particulates from the air. And London is one of the dirtiest cities in Europe for this type of pollution. Imperial College will re-confirm the evidence for London. Even if such Green Walls were not fab for helping relieve air pollution they look so much nicer that blank ...

In Tallinn Spring is slowly advancing into Summer. The Sun begins to offer some warmth and the days are growing long. In London the weather is less good. The rain and storms, that seem inevitable once a drought is declared, are clearly depressing the national mood. In the year of the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympic games, the national mood still remains rather bleak. Although the local elections will probably be a nasty mid term shock to the coalition government, the elections that really matter to Britain are happening elsewhere. The likely change of government in Paris may see ...
With the option of becoming a first-time buyer becoming ever more elusive for young adults, increasing numbers are turning to the Private Rented Sector (PRS) for their housing. Nationally there will soon be more tenants living in the PRS than in social housing. In areas with high housing costs and in university cities with a young population, the PRS has become a major part of the housing mix. This shift in occupancy type has led to rather rapid changes to some communities, which has understandably led to concern amongst the more established members of those neighbourhoods. However, the policy response ...

Here's my piece from Lib dem Voice yesterday. The headline on the piece isn't mine ('I don't think Jeremy Hunt should resign') - the above headline reflects more what I think. I was a little worried that the post would be misunderstood as an attack on Vince, when I intended the opposite, to defend his position - but in fact most people seem to have understood my point of view (although many are disagreeing - it's a cracking comments thread). Anyway, here's the piece or pop over to LDV to see the comments...Don't get me wrong. This isn't a post ...
Let's see. We've booked David Cameron for the sofa, Andrew Marr is in makeup, so, what shall we have him talk about?Well, what's happening? The economy is back in recession and there are important local government elections next week, the Leveson Enquiry is still exposing the complicity between government and the Murdoch 'empire', unemployment is far too high, the Eurozone is in trouble (again). So many choices...I know, let's talk about Jeremy Hunt!Don't get me wrong, the behaviour of a member of the Cabinet is a serious business, but we're hardly likely to learn anything from an attempted cross-examination of ...
How much chocolate can you put on a gingerbread man before he becomes standard-rated for VAT?
You may not have considered this question before, so I'll give you a little time to ponder it. [fx: Incidental music plays] So, got your answer? Here's the official one from HMRC: standard-rate VAT applies to "Gingerbread men decorated with chocolate unless this amounts to no more than a couple of dots for eyes". But, but, but... what if the eyes are not chocolate and instead the gingerbread man has a couple of chocolate buttons instead? And what if, hurtling dangerously out of the 19th century, the gingerbread man is actually a gingerbread woman? Aside from this being a procedural ...
The County Council is about to begin a £2 million project to ensure hundreds of kilometres of Cambridgeshire roads are maintained and improved. The surface dressing programme, using a thin film of bitumen and stone chippings, keeps the road surface in good condition and improves safety for all road users. The technique costs around 20% of conventional asphalt resurfacing, enabling a far greater length of road to be treated from within the available financial resources. Starting from May 8 work will be carried out in all areas of Cambridgeshire (the programme list is available here via Google Docs). Drivers are ...
I have today expressed concern to the City Council's Environment Director following news that a new mixed recyclates pilot to expand Dundee's recycling effort is very limited and excludes 3 of out Dundee's 8 wards completely including the West End. The council has updated me as follows: "As we are limited in the number of properties we're able to service for such a small pilot, it was therefore not possible to include all wards - in the same way that it was not possible to include all wards in the food waste trial - and it was felt that the ...
