At tonight's West End Community Council meeting, there was a very interesting presentation from Alistair Macleod of Solar Cities Scotland about their Community Carbon Exchange (CCX) project that has already run successfully in the Coldside and Maryfield areas. It is hoped that, subject to funding, this project can be rolled out to the West End and Whitfield later this year. The CCX works with groups, businesses, universities and schools on simple, carbon-reducing actions. It develops a plan of achievable actions and helps local people and groups monitor and record their successes. The CCX project is all about working with people ...

As a Liberal Democrat, I was delighted to read this piece in Tuesday's Telegraph by Business Secretary Vince Cable: Great liberal sense, not widely discussed in the media because it is not a gaffe, not about personalities and not about perceived splits in the Conservative/Liberal Democrat Coalition. I became politically active because I wanted Lib Dems to enter national government and do the sort of things that Vince Cable talks about in this article. That is, the 50 seat bonus which goes to the largest party after an election. "Enforced proportional representation" they call it. But it has left Greece in a crazy situation. OK, this is me talking from an armchair in Berkshire based on nil knowledge of Greece. Sorry. On Sunday, 49% of Greek voters voted for anti-austerity parties. Only 32% voted for pro-austerity parties. So it's insane that the two main pro-austerity parties were left two seats away from a parliamentary majority, due to the 50 seat bonus. Take away the 50 seat bonus and reduce the parliament to 250 seats ...

One of the iconic images of the early days of the Coalition — in the midst of the summer haze of the leggeron rose garden bromance — was The Economist's front cover depicting the Prime Minister as a punk, representing the Coalition's self-appointed claim to be one of the most radical governments in history. Economically (a cuts agenda intended to rebalance the economy between the private/public sectors), socially (from free schools to gay marriage) and politically (police commissioners to Lords reform) — this 'liberal conservative government' was supposed to be a potent admixture of far-reaching reform. The end of the ...

I'll let Phil introduce and set up the video in his own words: In early 2012 I spent nine weeks based in Canada's Yukon Territory on the biggest astronomy and photography adventure I've ever tackled. The primary reason for going all the way up to the Yukon was of course to photograph the northern lights. But the conjunction between Venus and Jupiter in February/March provided a nice sideshow. It must be unprecedented for MPs and supporters of a party in government to produce their own version of the Queen's Speech in anticipation of the real thing, but that is exactly what Tim Montgomerie and Conservative Home have done - with the acknowledged help of David Davis and John Redwood. Some would see this as undermining David Cameron's Conservative-led government, but Tim has argued that it could strengthen Cameron's hand in coalition negotiations and prepare a programme for the next manifesto and subsequent majority government. My recent explorations of Leicester's London Road have been guided by Helen Boynton and Derek Seaton's book From Tollgate to Tramshed The tollgate used to stand at the start of London Road, near Victoria Park. And this is the tramshed. It stands fractionally outside the city boundary by the roundabout near Leicester racecourse. Leicester's tram system closed in 1949. Shortly after the formation of the Coalition Government, PCS reps across the country worked with local Trade Councils and other unions to set up campaigning organisations such as Cambridgeshire Against The Cuts. The aim is to campaign against cuts in vital services both locally and nationally such as supporting the Judicial Review into the stopping of bus subsidies locally and the March for the Alternative. Supporting this, the PCS produced a booklet. There is an Alternative. France's Fifth Republic has a new president, Francois Hollande. I shed few tears for the man he replaces, Nikolas Sarkozy — while his economic policies were preferable his grubbing for National Front votes (and not just in the last fortnight) saw him descend to the same sectarian level as George Galloway from the opposite political extreme. Combined, though, with the recent fall of the Netherlands government, and the Greek voters' rejection of any form of workable mainstream coalition (or so it seems) — and indeed the poor turnouts in the UK's and Italy's local elections last week — and it's ...

The Gwynedd knife edge

One of the things about having a lot of local elections taking place at the same time is that it's possible for a lot of rare situations to arise, just by the pure chance of probabilities. And sometimes, if you're very lucky, two or more of them will crash into each other and create a very interesting situation. Which is what's happened in Gwynedd after the recent set of local elections. It all started with a political curiosity back in April, when it was announced that no candidate had stood for election in the Bryncrug ward. It was an odd ...

The fallout from the local government elections continues in today's media, perhaps magnified by the fact that the government is made up of two parties not just the one.
