Liberals and Gambling

The Liberals used to be the party of the temperance movement. Brewers thus always used to be Tory, prompting a barrel-load of appointments to the House of Lords that was once collectively dubbed the beerage. Anti-gambling used to be a big part of the same movement. With that in mind, I was interested to read a month-old BBC story about the Commons culture committee (do we no longer have Select Committees?) having urged what the BBC calls "further deregulation of the gaming and betting industries". I am on the Right of my party (a party that Charles Kennedy once called ...

Those with a long memory will remember that what made the Asil Nadir case most interesting to some was his record of donations to the Conservative Party. He was, to put it mildly, generous, giving £440,000 during the late 1980's, just before the Polly Peck campaign collapsed amidst allegations of theft and fraud. I note that there have been calls for the Conservatives to return the funds, based on a curiously naïve declaration by Lord (then Sir Norman) Fowler that, were the funds proven to be stolen, they would be returned. Now, far be it from me to criticise, especially ...

It's always a bit of a dilemma when I set up these polls what questions to ask, the more so if I'm aware any negative results they throw up could be seized on by the media. For generations in the wilderness Liberals held firm to the belief that British businesses would be transformed for the better if they were owned and controlled by their employees. From the Yellow Book , to Ownership for All and on to Jo Grimond this was the USP of our economic policy. After Paddy stepped down as Leader the policy fell from view but has been taken up again by Norman Lamb (although maybe not in the in such a radical distributionist fashion) Today the BBC carries two reports on the biggest group of worker owned business is Europe and asks ...

Tynemouth Watch House

This is Tynemouth Watch House, headquarters of the town's volunteer life brigade since it was built in 1887. It was designed by Joseph F. Gomoszynski. It is like a New England rendering of the sought of late Victorian house you find on Leicester's London Road. Today the Watch House is home to a museum, though it was locked when I was there last week. It is also due for a major refurbishment. It forms part of a distinctive group of buildings that stand between the sea and the Collingwood Monument. There is something of Southwold about them.

Jeepers, we're in for a tough time ahead. Looks like there is an agreement to bail out Spanish banks as their economy is swirling around the plughole... Greece is already further down the plughole and will default again soon... and the rest of us are likely to be sucked down by the inertia, too, before long. How to persuade people to keep their nerve? How long can ordinary folk, more interested in EastEnders, The Simpsons, or simply finding the time to run from one job to another, spare any precious time to start to understand the issues? Sunday: The Foreign Office's recent threat to INVADE ECUADOR was a new LOW, managing to break the LIBERAL Principle of internationalism, the CONSERVATORY Principle of maintaining traditional values and the REALPOLITIK principle of not giving anyone else the excuse to do it back to us, all at once! Mr Vague was clearly having an OFF DAY or (more likely in the middle of August) a DAY OFF. Thankfully, it seems we've backed down. But we NEVER should have said that. Moments Lost

Every day is made up of moments some memorable, some transient, some left hanging, because no one has time to record them. That's the way things are with this blog at the moment right here right now. Around 5:30 a day or so back I happened to witness a gorgeous sunrise near Hythe none too remarkable however memorable, a brilliant red fiery sky, maybe something not out of the ordinary but as I shot down the slip road onto the M20 instantly I felt regret for not having pulled over and taken a shot on the old smartphone camera. This relationship held when controlling for a number of demographic variables as well as the "Big Five" personality traits. Disgust sensitivity was also associated with more conservative voting in the 2008 U.S. presidential election. In Study 2, we replicated the disgust sensitivity-conservatism relationship in an international sample of respondents from 121 different countries. Across both samples, contamination ...

Sheila Fraser

I recently mentioned that the River Crescent Residents' Association AGM that I attended last Sunday was tinged with much sadness as one of its leading members, Sheila Fraser, passed away the previous Wednesday, after a short illness. Today, at Dundee Crematorium, along with her neighbours, her family and many friends, we remembered Sheila and celebrated her life. Sheila had two careers - firstly as a police officer in Fife, and later, a school teacher in Dundee - but above all, she was a much loved mother, grandmother, neighbour and friend. Sheila was always cheerful, positive and smiling - qualities that ...

Last Friday I wrote a post about how I thought feminism was becoming mainstream. Julian Assange, George Galloway, Todd Akin and others all combined to convince me it really wasn't, or else it's job was far from over. In recent days, on both sides of the Atlantic, there have been not one, but two expressions of the kind of attitudes on rape you had hoped died with the Dark Ages. I haven't weighed in on this Julian Assange debate but I have many questions on the matter and there aren't too many answers out there. Facts are few and far between but conjecture is all around.
