I recently wrote about Hillsborough and asked the reporter to look at his own culpability for his article in the Sun. The reporter was blaming the editor, Kelvin McKenzie. Well today everyone is saying sorry including Kelvin. I have heard that his apology is seen as too little too late but at least he has apologised. He could have stuck with the line that this is what he had been told was the truth. We have known for a long time that his 'truth' was lies. Everyone is apologising. The police, David Cameron, Sheffield Wednesday, as well as Kelvin. Apart ...
In Tom Sharpe's comic novel Porterhouse Blue, the new Master of the Porterhouse College confronts his colleagues and students at a dinner, with the accusation that they are suffering from the English disease. "Piles?" a young wag chirps up. "Nostalgia," comes the stern rebuke. University is a formative time and can be a peculiarly potent ...
Today, the President of the European Commission, Juan Manuel Barroso delivered the annual State of the Union address to the European Parliament. He gave a frank assessment of Europe's current problems and proposed an upbeat agenda for action, including strengthened democracy for Europe to make the EU more clearly accountable and responsive to its citizens. [This text was prepared to accompany my presentation to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Housing, 10/09/12] Many people appear to be coming round to the idea that investment in housing could be the way forward in attempting to revive the economy. There are good reasons for thinking that housing investment is a promising avenue to pursue. Even though the estimates differ somewhat in magnitude, the direct impacts of investment in terms of increasing employment and taxation and reduced unemployment benefits are now relatively clear. And import leakage is low. The multipliers and indirect impacts of housing investment compare very ...
Korshid. One of the children who was killed in this attack. How can this happen in the world? In modern society? The Taliban sent a 14 year old boy as a suicide bomber to blow up Nato headquarters in Kabul. Four of the children who were killed, aged 12-16, sold trinkets and chewing gum to soldiers and diplomats. They were close friends and shared the money they earned to help their families. Those children already led difficult lives and they were happy but even that was taken away from them. I want to remember these children and hope that children ...
Dear LibDems HQ, We pay our membership fees to the Federal Party, we send our representatives to Federal Conference when we can, we contribute to many Party bodies, and we fill in the information that is required under PPER as we are asked to do. Why is it, then, that the Federal Party constantly fails ...

"The failure of leadership was compounded by the way in which the authorities reacted to the disaster. As the report makes clear, the attempts to evade responsibility, the prevarication of certain officers and officials, and the conduct of some parts of the media turned a tragedy into a scandal and prolonged the agony of the families who lost loved ones." Matt Gallagher writes on today's report from the inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster." Jonathan Fryer attended Nick Clegg's equal marriage celebration. "Malls offer a false sense of community, kicking you out when the shops close at 5pm. The high street ...
'Mr Earl, can't you understand the modern world?' - UKIP MEP swept aside in #SOTEU debate
Earlier today in Strasbourg, the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso delivered his annual 'State of the European Union' speech (for analysis of that click here). Following the speech MEPs were given the opportunity to take the floor and have their say. Franco-German Green MEP Daniel Cohn-Bendit (who will sadly soon step down as an MEP) did so, encouraged that the Commission
Big Brother Watch received a lot of publicity this morning for its report Class of 1984: The extent of CCTV in secondary schools and academies. That link will take you to the full report, and there is also an article about it on the Big Brother Watch website: This report highlights an issue that has not been subject to any real public debate and we hope by highlighting the scale of the situation a proper debate can now take place about not only how to regulate CCTV, but also why surveillance continues to increase unchecked when there is still no ...
Extraordinarily, the answer may well be yes. Not only that, if I have understood the excavations correctly, they found him in the first trench they opened. The video above explains how the dig has been conducted, and here is the opening statement that Richard Taylor, the University of Leicester's director of corporate affairs, made at this morning's press conference at Leicester Guildhall: "The University of Leicester applied to the Ministry of Justice under the 1857 Burials Act for permission to exhume human remains found at the Grey Friars site in Leicester. "The work was conducted by Dr Turi King from ...
After the hustle and bustle of Glasgow University Freshers Fair, I decided to take a look at the literature of the Better Together campaign. I will leave aside for a minute the irony of an "all party non-party campaign" having its literature disseminated through local Labour Clubs. I wanted to take a look at the substantive claims behind their leafleting campaign and to see what the "positive case" for the continuation of the Union between Scotland and the rest of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Their campaign leaflets pursue this idea that a strong Scotland inside the UK can have ...
George Lyon MEP writes: Scots need guarantees on EU membership before independence referendum
As a Vice President of the European Budget Committee I am busy debating how the EU budget, or what those who stalk the corridors of Brussels call the Multi-annual Financial Framework (MFF), will be distributed in coming years. As an MEP for Scotland, I am also focussed on getting the best possible deal for my constituents. With all the constraints that the current economic climate have placed on the budgets of Member States that task is hard enough. But Scots must also consider that the next MFF, that runs from 2014-2020, will be decided in the shadow of the independence ...
Kelvin Mackenzie, the man behind The Sun's controversial, and now provenly inaccurate, coverage of the Hillsborough football tragedy, has today offered an apology for the paper's The Truth front page: His apology read: "I too was totally misled. Twenty-three years ... Continue reading →
I was a member of the audience in the Sally Naden show yesterday at Radio Lancashire and I can thoroughly recommend going to see a live show (is show the right word for a radio programme). There is no cost to attend and all I had to do was reply to an email. I went to see Chonkinfeckle, a duo from Wigan who play the ukulele. Sally also had two other guests, Bruce Crowther who spoke eloquently about fair trade and Fairtrade products. The third panelist had her own business that looked to promote businesses by quantitative and qualitative research ...
After last night's Libdem exec meeting myself and Ed Jennings retired to a Top Secret facility to discuss party matters, both local and National. Ok, we were sitting in his car opposite my house but we were discussing Politics - and in doing so we hit upon the solution of the "Clegg leadership dilemma." You see, although both of us respect Nick and acknowledge all of the hard work he has done we also both acknowledge that his leadership in 2015 could well be deadly to the party - which means new leadership before then. Any new leader would have ...
Brendan Barber, the outgoing General Secretary of Britian's Trade Union Congress, called for "an Olympic approach to the economy". He was, of course, only one of many politicians and others trying to use the example of London's success in putting on the 2012 Games to try and make a wider point. He said that it showed that "the market does not always deliver". In this I think he was referring to both the fact that the games were a government sponsored grand project, and the spectacular failure of one of the private contractors, G4S, to deliver security staff. Well I ...

I have discovered a new blog today (well late last night if we are being strictly accurate) and it is one of my favourite things on the internet. The wonderfully named Confederacy of Spinsters is a fascinating read and is written by three women in Texas. The blog post that drew me to the site was one entitled 'I think you're neat, let's date.' In it the author proposes a way to take out all the awkwardness of those early dating days. At what point do you go from a date to something more? I think we are all very ...
The right-wing media and a few Tory rent-a-gobs such as Peter Bone, MP, have got themselves into quite a lather over the past 24 hours because of Nick Clegg's alleged description of opponents to Equal Marriage as 'bigots'. The fact that he actually did not use that term (it was in an unfortunately unverified pre-release ...

The works to improve Gatley Green are scheduled to start on 17th September and last for around eight weeks. To minimise disruption, works affecting the highway will take place in off-peak hours (9.30-3.30) with lane closures and temporary traffic lights in place during those hours. Public access to premises will be maintained at all times.
Construction will start next month on the new units on East Walk opposite Tesco at Yate. The largest unit will be M&S Simply Food. Sports Direct's unit will be spread across two floors, and Costa Coffee is taking a smaller unit. There is also another small unit which has not yet been let. Work is expected to be complete by March 2013.
The findings of the enquiry into the Hillsborough disaster are truly shocking. They highlight a failure of leadership by the most senior members of the South Yorkshire Police, both in their handling of the game and its aftermath. Having worked as a Ground Commander at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium, I am fully aware of the painstaking work that goes into making a major football match as safe as possible for those attending. The planning, forethought and training that is needed to ensure that such events occur without danger are considerable, and it is evident from the findings of the ...

I'm not, it has to be said, a huge history buff - or at least, I'm not interested in History for History's sake. For me to get interested, there needs to be a hook or a narrative - like Radio 4's History of the World in 100 Objects, for example. Historical dates and context-less Archaeology leave me dry. There has, however, been a story that has aroused my interest lately - an archaeological dig in Leicester. Jonathan Calder over on Liberal England visited the dig site on Saturday and reports on the fortuitous circumstances which have led to the discovery ...
With conference season nearly upon us, and a fairly controversial cabinet reshuffle earlier this week, the media reporting left right and centre on calls for Nick Clegg to stand down as Lib Dem leader may be symptomatic of the Liberal Democrats going through something of a crisis of faith. Do we still trust the leader? ...
Nick Clegg said in his keynote speech to Autumn Conference last year that his objective is: A fair start for every child... we allow prejudice, tradition and class to crush a million hopes and dreams....that's why I have been leading the charge for social mobility - for fairer chances, for real freedom. Liberal Democrats want to see opportunity unconstrained by discrimination, and with equal life chances with respect to ethnicity. The world has become a smaller place. Improving transport links and technological breakthroughs are drawing the people of the world closer together. In socially and racially diverse 21st Century Britain ...
Today's long awaited release of the Hillsborough files and apology from David Cameron is hopefully the beginning of the end of a long road for the families of the 96 fans who died. It is clear the police and emergency services engaged in a process of backside covering - including influencing the inquests. It is hard to see anything other than criminal charges for those involved. Nick Clegg first demanded the release of the documents over a year ago and I pondered later that their release may have only happened as a result of the more open style of government ...
To cover up the loss of £400,000 on a failed "Love Luton" concert, Luton's Labour council is to take the money from Luton Airport. But this is smoke and mirrors, because the money would have come to the Council from the airport anyway! LISTEN: listen to ‘Iain Lee speaking to Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Borough Council about the £400,000 loss from the Love Luton Festival.’ on Audioboo BBC STORY:
Sadly the cover-up over Hillsborough is not unique. We have many signs of cover ups that have not yet been dealt with. I shall list some of them. 1. A US journalist has been banned from the UK because she wanted to investigate and report on Haut de la Garenne (see an EDM I tabled yesterday). Link now here see comments. 2. Babies were made to breathe carbon monoxide at a concentration that
Nick Clegg, a man who has been completely behind marriage equality for as long as the issue has been discussed (yes even before most LGBT politicians!), has sadly annoyed the anti-equality folks with his use of that highly charged word "bigot" in a draft speech. Even more sadly he then removed that word from the actual speech and assured everyone he doesn't think they are bigots if they oppose marriage equality. Peter Bone, Tory MP, had this to say: "Nick Clegg has got to explain himself and apologise very rapidly, this is not the way the deputy prime minister behaves." ...
The media liked to play up just how long it had been since there had been a British male grand slam champion. The length of time lasted a full 76 years since Fred Perry last triumphed in the US open in 1936. I guess it makes for a good narrative, but really it just casts a shadow on some of the excellent tennis players we've produced since, almost implying that their career's hadn't been good enough because they'd not managed to win one of the sport's greatest prizes. The stat has been used to undermine a few excellent careers... well ...
A petition has been launched by a cross party group of councillors calling for plans by senior members of Cornwall Council to privatise services to be stopped. Services including libraries, payroll and benefit payments face being run by outside companies after a tendering process for work worth £300m a year. The petition is being run by Andrew Wallis, the Independent councillor who proposed the anti-privatisation motion at the last council meeting. Andrew's motion was approved by the majority of councillors but the Cabinet decided the next day to ignore democracy and press ahead with the plan. Others behind the petition ...
On average, someone commits suicide in England every two hours. That's over 4,200 suicides a year. That figure may shock you. But what is just as shocking is that a lesbian, gay or bisexual person is twice as likely as a heterosexual person to self harm I was drawing this awful statistic to people's attention because Monday was World Suicide Prevention Day. It was also the occasion for me to the launch the Government's new Suicide Prevention Strategy - the first for ten years. It is based on evidence of what works. Credit is due to Paul Burstow who worked ...
A special South Gloucestershire Council meeting this week listened to many young people speaking passionately about the services they need, then voted to safeguard youth centres in the Priority Neighbourhood areas and still make funds available across South Glos to help communities provide for young people, while a Tory effort to slash funding to young carers was defeated. The issue was originally discussed by the Council's Children and Young People Committee on 25th July, but Conservative councillors then referred it to a meeting of the full council. Lib Dems proposed that one youth centre be provided as a council service ...
A few weeks ago I blogged about the plans of Heart FM to cut its Cornish content. Now it emerges that another media organisation is threatening to do similar. Westcountry TV used to have a significant Cornish output with a studio in Truro, a nightly Cornwall news segment and six staff based in Cornwall. Then, three years ago, almost all of this went. Eighty staff were made redundant and the nightly news bulletin became a greater South West one combining the old Western Counties and Devon and Cornwall outputs. Now the company is looking for cuts again and this will ...

The Institute of Advanced Motoring has just released the results of its latest speed survey. Apparently 82% of people think it's acceptable for speed cameras. With an even higher 85% of people agree speed cameras have helped reduce road deaths. Nearly as many people, 72%, think speed awareness courses are a good idea. These results compare really well with the survey undertaken in 2007 when 70% found speed cameras acceptable. What's changed to help improve acceptance? Is it the increasing use of average speed cameras we come across while driving around? What do you think has caused this change? In ...
Bury Council is consulting on proposed revisions to the Home to School Transport Policy. The revised policy, if implemented, would apply with effect from 1 September 2013. It is proposed to remove the discretionary provision of free transport to pupils attending a particular school on the grounds of their or their parents' religion or belief, where there is a nearer qualifying school. Under the new proposal, children from low income families and those that live more than 3 miles from their nearest available school will continue to be eligible for a free home to school travel pass. The biggest effect ...
Boris Johnson has twice won a contest for a directly-elected Mayor. George Galloway has recently won a Parliamentary by-election. That is why, for all the many reasons Liberal Democrats have for criticising both, smart Liberal Democrats also know that there are lessons to be learnt from their electoral successes. Let your personality hang out. Boris, Gorgeous George - whatever the nickname, the point is the same: they have enough of their character on show to be a character. Only occasionally is being dull a virtue – usually when a predecessor's personality has become so tiring voters that want a break ...
A number of local residents have been in touch about dog fouling, particularly on Heywood Road. I know this is a problem in many areas, but there seemed to be a particular issue on Heywood Road because it is such an important 'walking route'. The Council have restored and updated a number of signs in the area between Rectory Lane and Heys Road, and two shops in the area have kindly displayed a 'poo fairy' notice in their window. Some patrols have also been undertaken by Council Officers. Obviously this is never an easy issue to solve completely – but ...
Bus shelters 4 The Green (Werrington) + Coniston Rd (Gunthorpe) added 2 Council's database
Local LIB DEM ward councillor, Darren Fower tells us that the two requests he raised with the City Council for a bus shelter at the stop located on The Green (pictured) and on Coniston Road (between Elter Walk and Borrowdale Close) have now been added to the City Councils database. Commenting, Cllr Darren Fower said: "If we are to attract more people to using buses then shelter while they wait should be paramount in any planned action. Council officers have now confirmed with me that the bus stop improvements have been placed on the database and points will then be ...
My regular column for the Prestwich Advertiser. Most people will agree that the number one priority for the Government is the economy, and most importantly - jobs. We are in a difficult situation, not only from the crazy uncontrolled spending of previous Labour governments, but the economic and financial turmoil across Europe in particular. We also know the problems in the housing market – a shortage of homes both to buy and to rent which are affordable - a particular issue in Prestwich because of higher house prices. Yet across the region there are empty building plots with nothing is ...
Here is the running order for PMQs today – not a Lib Dem in sight:

Yesterday there was a rather bizarre tweet by the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party. Especially when you consider that Mike Nesbitt is a media professional in his former life and this tweet came over 5 hours after Nick Clegg's office sent a correction to it's earlier press release. That earlier release said: "Continued trouble in the economy gives the bigots a stick to beat us with, as they demand we 'postpone' the equalities agenda in order to deal with 'the things people really care about'. As if pursuing greater equality and fixing the economy simply cannot happen at once." ...
Based on a Network Rail Press Release of Wednesday 06 Sep 2012 The East of England has received a major boost with improved railfreight, an increase in capacity on the West Coast Main Line through Hertfordshire and an easing of pressure on the A14. The Secretary of State for Transport has now approved Network Rail's scheme to remove a major bottleneck near Ipswich on the cross-country Felixstowe to Nuneaton rail route. As a result freight trains carrying shipping containers will be able to travel more directly from the Port of Felixstowe to destinations in the West Midlands, North-West England and ...
There are many reasons why we should damn Tony Blair and his minions; the nonsensical and murderous Iraq War, the now-ubquitous presence of closed circuit television in our national life, the exemption for Formula One from tobacco advertising rules, and the ever-widening separation of the Labour Party from the trade unions. However, perhaps one of ...
The Stockport Summary is a document released annually to help councillors and others make decisions about the Borough. It includes demographic information (population centres, where the wealthier and poorer areas are, how many people of different ages, how many men and women etc.), information on education, jobs, health, recycling and more, along with details of how changes in what central Government is doing are likely to affect the choices and decisions we need to be taking in Stockport. I've lived in Oxford for 17 years, so one of the questions I sometimes get asked by friends who are visiting is: which restaurants would you recommend? The following is my personal list of the best. As some of you will know our 9 1/2 month old baby Oliver died in July. My wife's cousin, Tim and two of his friends are running a Triathlon this Sunday and are very kindly raising money for the Friends of PICU, a charity that raises funds to help with equipment, staff and other things like toys for critically ill children in Southampton PICU. Olly spent several weeks in that unit and we were very grateful for all the help and support we were given some of which was funded by this charity. So if you are able to we ...
This is another story in the Slovak Media. I spoke also to an American Pastor who dealt with one of the Slovak cases. He shares my concern as to what the English state did to the children.
This one snapped in Rome could, were in not for the absence of pointing, grace many a Liberal Democrat leaflet (especially as the Italians have gone for an English-language slogan!). Brave organiser to have a plan that requires getting everyone lined up in the right order, mind you. People lined up glumly looking at the camera is such a no-no in my book* that I really should set up a shortcut combo in my email program to automatically insert "and make sure it isn't just a line of people staring glumly at the camera" as I say it so often ...
Nick Clegg spoke to Pink News last night shortly before the equalities reception which has caused so much controversy. Never has so much newsprint been used up over something that a politician never said or intended to say. Asked about the "bigot" affair, Nick said that it was not the kind of word he would use. He also spoke about the new ministerial team handling Equalities. Last night, as Nick Thornsby reported, Jo Swinson was appointed as an Equalities Minister a full week after the completion of the rest of the reshuffle. There is clearly a story as to why ...

As someone with a long-standing interest in manufacturing, based on having over 50 years' experience as an engineer and employer in industry, I am very excited to be a member of the newly formed Liberal Democrat Campaign for Manufacturing Group. This much-needed group aims to promote and develop manufacturing in the UK in both existing and new areas. Whilst we have a manufacturing sector to be proud of, it does require investment. Energising this sector is key to getting the economy back on track in the current difficult economic climate. The Liberal Democrats have already delivered a number of key ...
I've commented previously on how many suicides there are – and how rarely these tragedies register on the political radar. For example, from 2010 comes this: There are seven suicides for every one murder I sort of knew this statistic already, but was quite shocked when working out the actual numbers: Number of murders in the UK: 786 Number of suicides in the UK: 5,706 The proportion of murders which get reported in the media is extremely high compared with nearly all other crimes or forms of death. Many of the reasons for that are understandable, but one risk of ...
It's been a long time coming hasn't it? The new Business Improvement District in Camborne has worked with the local traders to arrange a trial period of free parking throughout September and October. Shoppers can park in Trevithick Road car park (behind Argos/the old Rowe Bowl) for 2 hours for free during the pilot and shop to their hearts content in the town centre! I know I shall be making use of this and I hope you all do too, to keep Camborne's town centre busy and bustling.
Over at Freedom Central, Welsh Liberal Democrats Education Spokesperson, Aled Roberts says that all parties in the GCSE exams row should step back from the war of words and sit down to work together for the best interests of Welsh students. He says that Welsh students are not best served by this sort of twitter-based policy making and it is no way to reach a calm and moderate conclusion. The Welsh Education Minister is undoubtedly right to intervene to protect the interests of Welsh students but as his Conservative shadow points out in today's Western Mail, he is not exactly ...
