An intriguing snippet from tonight's Evening Standard, buried away on page 10... [IMG: image] So the much-vaunted Coalition 2.0 re-boot, originally scheduled for this autumn is being pushed back to 2013. Which makes it not really a mid-term review any more. As that great, historical liberal/conservative fusion politician might have said: "This is not the end of the Coalition. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it may just be the end of the beginning."

City Council meetings

Last night, I participated in the City Council committee meetings, dominated by the debate on the future of the Kemback Street Resource Centre and the Out and About support service. The decision, pushed through by the SNP administration, against the combined opposition of every other councillor - whatever their political affiliation - represents the low point of the SNP administration in the three years it has controlled the City Council. SNP councillors made much of their view that the opposition had failed to read correctly the original report from March 2012 on care and support for adults with a learning ...

Cllr Steve Tierney (CON, Roman Bank and Peckover) A major project to transfer around two million family records to a new online system, and continue to make them freely available, has been completed in Cambridgeshire. The project means the information is now online on a much easier to use and more reliable system. It has been made possible thanks to a partnership agreement between Cambridgeshire County Council Registration Service and the Cambridgeshire Family History Society which has led to a new system being developed. This ensures continued access to the several million entries already online, and will now allow work ...

From the University of Leicester website: Earlier this month, Leicester's City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby visited the University to give a joint lecture on the city's past 1,500 years with the Director of the University of Leicester Archaeological Services, Richard Buckley. It focused mainly upon the city's first 1,500 years of existence and it finished at the end of the medieval period. In this lecture Richard talked about how recent research and discoveries have shed new light upon many interesting facets of the city, including the health and diet and lives of the population throughout history. In the past I have supported the idea of turning off street lights in the deep of the night. This is not just because it saves money, but also because it may give us back the experience of seeing the awesome nighttime sky. And in May I reported a counterintuitive claim from West Mercia Police that crime goes down when street lights are turned off. But now there is a convincing theory as to why this is the case (found via Conservative Home). Because This is Bristol quotes a city councillor, Ron Hardie: "The police have told us they have ...

Tickled Pinkneys...

There were five principal council contests and one town council election reported to ALDC on Thursday 25th October. Our best result on the night was courtesy of the Windsor and Maidenhead Lib Dems, who were out fighting the defending Tories for the Pinkneys Green ward. When it was last contested in May 2011, the Conservatives enjoyed a 90-vote majority in the ward, leaving it winnable but with the ever-present uncertainty of the role UKIP and Labour would play in the final totals. This time it was a near eight per cent surge for UKIP that appears to have hamstrung Conservative ...

Cooperating with Europe on police and justice matters is vital for keeping us safe. European measures are used by our local police and prosecutors. They help catch criminals who flee overseas, tackle international crime and kick out foreign criminals from the UK. These measures have been hugely successful in breaking up paedophile rings, preventing terrorism and bringing criminals who flee across borders to swift justice. For instance, greater cooperation enables English and Spanish authorities to launch 'Operation Captura.'
