Channel 4 News has just broken the story that the Liberal Democrats are urgently reviewing their internal procedures following publication of serious allegations of sexual harassment against Lib Dem peer and former chief executive officer Chris Rennard. Now, obviously innocent until proven guilty applies here but when you read the accounts by the alleged victims they sound pretty damn plausible and are being made by people with no reason to make them up - not to mention that some of my friends within the party have mentioned that they'd heard rumours about Rennard before. Which makes it extremely worrying to ...

I'm currently making my way through the 3rd chapter of Simon Watts and Paul Stenner's 2012 book "Doing Q Methodological Research – Theory, Method and Interpretation". Anyone who is trying to find the "missing link" between quantitative and qualitative psychological research will find this interesting. Saturday was another of my partners' weekends at college (these seem to come around faster and faster) so Barney and I opted for a visit to Locomotion – the National Railway Museum at Shildon. This was purely an educational visit for Barney's benefit, you understand... Like Mima, Locomotion is another new facility we were surprised to learn about when we moved back up here in 2010. I guess it makes sense – given that Shildon was the site of the first steam hauled passenger rail journey, and went on to churn out tens of thousands of railway wagons over the ...

The Conservatives' deeply unimpressive campaign in the Eastleigh by-election continued in its accustomed style today as their candidate, Maria Hutchings, failed to attend a hustings organised and broadcast by BBC Radio Five Live. Her excuse, as Michael Deacon reminds us in the Daily Telegraph, was that she had to accompany David Cameron on a visit to the Prysmian Cables & Systems factory in the town. Cameron, says Deacon, said that she simply hadn't had time to take part in the hustings because of the factory visit. But it seems that the same journalists from the BBC had no trouble in ...

Welcome to the latest in my occasional series highlighting interesting findings from academic research. Today – the problem of 'uninteresting' trial data not being published. This has become a high profile issue in medical research, with the concerns that trial data where a treatment is found to have no impact is much less likely to be published than trial data which does show an impact. The result? The published data may give a very lopsided view of what is really happening. This is not just an issue for medicine, however, as Donald Green, Mary McGrath and Peter Aronow have pointed ...

When the trial of Chris Huhne's ex-wife Vicky Pryce collapsed on Wednesday, the judge felt moved to declare that the jury had, in his opinion, demonstrated "a fundamental deficit in understanding" in the task that was required of them, an occurrence which "in 30 years of criminal trials (he) had never come across". He was, of course, referring to a list of 10 questions submitted to him by the jury, a list which is now quickly gaining notoriety across the blogosphere and which has prompted one commentator to even label the jury as the worst "in the history of mankind". ...

For various different motives, the campaign to force out the NHS chief Sir David Nicholson seems to be gathering pace. The NHS blogger Roy Lilley added his advice to the smouldering fire this morning. But personally, I would be worried about replacing one NHS chief with another in exactly the same mould - unless there was some consensus about what we need instead. And therein lies the difficulty. Nicholson is a symbol of the command-and-control NHS system which has been found so wanting, the creation of the Blair Brown years. But the coalition has not yet grasped the problems with ...

The North once again compared fairly unfavourably to the south in yesterday's unemployment figures. It's safe to assume it will do so again in next month's figures, and the month after that. While political commentators note the UK's slide towards a triple dip, most people outside London don't need clinical economic definitions to tell them that money is tight. But let's be clear, this disparity is not a consequence of idleness, nor has it happened by chance. Public policy and investment decisions have made it all but inevitable. London has vast infrastructure spending exemplified by Crossrail, a Government proactively championing ...

Despite extensive media coverage this morning, the aid budget is not about to be slashed to fund the Ministry of Defence. All aid spending from the Department of International Development (DFID) is in line with internationally agreed guidelines. There is a strict definition of what can count as Overseas Development Assistance (ODA), which was established by the OECD. For example, aid cannot be spent on combat operations nor on military equipment. It can be (and is) used to train another country's security forces in human rights awareness, including gender-based violence issues - something I'm sure all Liberal Democrats support. What ...
