For those of you who have been wondering why I've not been writing as well as I used to, and why I've not had the energy to reply to comments as much — I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnoea. It turns out that I wake up an average of ten times an hour while [...]
This video is suggested to me by @sxybio on Twitter, who is on a roll having previously sent me the story about the giant badger terrorising schoolgirls in Kent. It is fascinating for two reasons. First, because it consists of scenes from French Dressing, which was the first film Ken Russell directed. Despite the presence of the kitchen-sink heroes James Booth and Roy Kinnear, it is a comedy and one inspired by Jean Vigo and Jacques Tati. The French influence is strengthened by the composer of the film's score, George Delerue. He also provided the music behind the film of ...
I welcome this initiative from our local Age Concern which will give many local pensioners the opportunity to have a new, low cost, low emission boiler. Please check it out here and pass it on to anyone you know who may qualify Liverpool Construction Company, Fletchrose, has teamed up with Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton to deliver a programme of free boiler replacements for older people across Merseyside. "What I don't tolerate, is the idea that people paid to perform marriages by the public purse should be able to pick and choose who they want to marry. This amendment was put forward, not because any great number of registrars actually had an issue, but because it was a way for the right wing to argue against Equal Marriage without being called up on their homophobia. What I don't tolerate, is our Party President's view that gay people shouldn't be allowed to have the audacity to demand that a public servant do the job they're paid to do." So ...
This is my fifth blog entry on the "hard working Brit" and I'll make it my last but I really could write a blog for each of the 27 paragraphs. The author tells us he isn't racist. Why does he feel the need to tell us this? Why does he think that all the rich (who is rich?) "avoid paying proper taxes"? Why does he believe that English should be the only language used in England? Are there no circumstances in which another language should be used? How does he feel about foreign travel? I presume he would not venture ...
Following on from the last blog, the next paragraph from the Facebook commentator reads "I think owning a home doesn't make you a capitalist; it makes you a smart Brit. I think being a minority does not make you noble or victimized, and does not entitle you to anything. Get over it. Join in with the majority!" Well the term capitalist is often a derogatory term for a rich person but it also means a supporter of capitalism, the economic system to which we all belong, so owning a home does make you a capitalist. I am not sure what ...
Please see the previous two blog entries for the context of this one but here is the next sentence in a Facebook status update. "I believe the money I make belongs to me and not to some governmental functionary, to share with others who don't work!" That's a good idea if you don't believe in a social context for government. If you don't believe that the state should educate its citizens then it's fine. If you don't want the police or the armed services then it's fine too. If you don't want roads then it's fine. Is it really controversial ...
It's time for the Liberal Democrats to pay their interns, say a list of Liberal Youth types in an open letter to the party's president, Tim Farron, published on Liberal Democrat Voice. And they are right. I have reached an age where I am remarkably relaxed about young people not being paid. But, as the letter says: This is about minimising barriers, one of which is affordability. Some of us have worked in the past as unpaid interns; we know that sometimes people are happy to work for free, or feel they have to in order break into a profession. ...
Earlier today I wrote about a 'hard working Brit' who is posting messages on Facebook. A quick search tells us that the Facebook message has been attributed to Nigel Farage but it isn't him. Whoever is pretending to be the author is not telling the truth so how can we believe anything they say? His (if it is a man) first paragraph sets the scene. The supposed author is not just hard working, and works long hours to earn a living, but is also the Tory Party's Worst Nightmare. It could be Nigel Farage but we know that it isn't. ...
Today on Lib Dem Voice Simon Hughes outlined his reasons for abstaining on the third reading of the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill earlier this week. He does what Simon does so well and put out an argument that seems to make sense, and it clearly does to him based on his vote on Tuesday. However, there are some holes in his argument. Primarily it appears his main reason is the establishment of the Church of England. I'm sure like me many Liberal Democrats at fringe events have heard Simon say that with his Welsh roots he is proud to be ...
Well said Simon Jenkins in today's Guardian: We will not buckle to terrorism said David Cameron after the Woolwich murder on Wednesday. He then buckled. Everyone buckled. The home secretary buckled, the defence secretary buckled, the communities secretary buckled, the mayor of London buckled, the chief of police buckled, the press buckled, the BBC summoned its senior editors and they buckled. Everyone buckled. The first question in any war - terrorism is allegedly a war - is to ask what the enemy most wants you to do. The Woolwich killers wanted publicity for their crime, available nowadays at the click of ...
The Friends of Garston Park are looking for people ready to wield a paintbrush next weekend. On Sunday June 2nd volunteers will be varnishing some of the artwork around the sports pitches on the park And some of the paintwork needs a bit of touching up too If you can help and can spare a bit of time , please join us on 2 June at 10 am. If you have a paintbrush you can bring, that will help. The artwork is part of the Great Art project which involved local groups and schools working on boards illustrating aspects of ...
This morning, I had the pleasure of chairing a residents' meeting for the folk who live in the Tullideph area, followed by chairing an afternoon meeting with the residents of Morven Terrace sheltered housing complex. Both meeting were well-attended and very productive but must rate as two of the most challenging I have ever chaired - I have a bad case of laryngitis and my voice is litle more than a whisper at the moment. A radio interview I was to undertake today was really not an option! At the Tullideph sheltered lounge, we discussed numerous issues including bus services ...

Trustees sought for St George's Hall The St. George's Hall Charitable Trust is looking to recruit two new trustees to help raise funds for the Hall's development. The Trust has two vacancies on its Board of Trustees and is hoping to find individuals with the right experience who have a genuine desire to help improve the Hall and who would act on a voluntary basis. Professor Steven Broomhead, Chair of the Trustees, said: "The Trustees' role is to identify donors ...
Next Friday (31 May) sees a Neighbours Day event at ESLA on Horrocks Avenue. I decided I wanted to go when I saw the "take away your own cup cake" but that's not all that'll be happening. Running from 10 to 4 there are activities including zumba, tap dancing classes, cookery demonstrations, family sports competitions and face painting It's all free and sounds like it'll be great fun. Organisations including LHT and SLH are behind the event. And they stress that it'll take place EVEN IF IT RAINS as there is space indoors. There is an equivalent event taking place ...

[IMG: local Lib Dem councillor Rachel Allison outside Alexander House one of the block of flats affected by delayed repair work on the Hillcrest Estate in Highgate] Work to improve council homes across the borough may be seriously delayed due to legal errors at Haringey Council, which means the entire process of selecting a contractor for the work must start all over again. Over a thousand households living in council properties in Haringey were due to have their homes fixed this year and could see the repair delayed as a result of the legal error. The legal mistake has forced ...
Dear Tim, We are writing to you to express our feelings on the subject of unpaid internships. There can be all sorts of barriers for people who wish to undertake internships and it is crucial that the Liberal Democrats, and our Parliamentarians, do all we can to make sure that the internships we offer are as open as possible. This is about minimising barriers, one of which is affordability. Some of us have worked in the past as unpaid interns; we know that sometimes people are happy to work for free, or feel they have to in order break into ...
Bootle Labour Councillor Dowd's legacy of extravagant waste 'the lack of prudence beggars belief'-Liverpool Post No apology, unrepentant and unreconstructed Mark Dowd sits on the Labour front bench at Sefton glowering his defiance. His colleagues protect him and rubbish every report issued that details his outrageous behavior describing them as 'tawdry and rubbish'. How much more is there to come out? When will the Labour party act . To date we know about what the Daily Post calls: ...............'the monstrous black elephant that is Merseytravel's monolithic HQ at Mann Island' which it describes as having 'entered the realms of the ...

[IMG: Nick Clegg at inter faith event.] Today I attended an interfaith meeting, chaired by Nick Clegg and attended by representatives of the other political parties, following the terrible events in Woolwich on Wednesday where soldier Lee Rigby was brutally murdered. The event was incredibly positive, with representatives of many faiths coming together to denounce the attack, condemn those who bring terrorism to our streets, and agree that we have to stand together in the face of it. I'll warn you up front that I'm not going to use this post to make political points, because this is beyond politics. ...
Despite recent fears of sceptics winning public debates, they are not all powerful, but have cast a spell upon their opponents Earlier this week, Martin Wolf of the Financial Times announced that the "climate sceptics have won". His comments echo those of former Nasa scientist James Hansen who told an audience in Edinburgh last year that the sceptics "have been winning the public debate with the help of tremendous resources." The action needed in response to this situation was spelt out by Lord Stern - the eponymous author of the well-known 2007 report on the economics of climate change - ...
I've just finished reading Andrew Adonis's 5 Days in May: The Coalition and Beyond and it has given me food for thought both about how the 2010 coalition negotiations proceeded and what lessons we might learn for any potential future coalition discussions. Having already read David Laws's 22 Days in May and Rob Wilson's 5 Days to Power and having watched various radio and TV programmes about the 2010 negotiations, I already had a reasonable idea about how they went. But it was interesting to get a Labour perspective on the talks. The fairly settled view from Lib Dems is ...
As Chair of Governors, I would like to congratulate Linaker's football team. As reported in this week's Visiter, the A team won the Loveridge Cup. They have been trying to win this competition since 1964. The match was played at Southport FC's stadium against St John's Ainsdale. Linaker's winning score was 2-0. Pictured above are the team, teacher Nick Dempster and, of course, the trophy.
I've not written anything on here about theatre. I can tell because in creating this post, I've just had to add a "Theatre" category. And yet in the last few years I've been to more shows than I can remember, made friends of numerous lovely and talented actors, directors and writers, and had a number of short plays of my own staged. I've written enough now that I've added a list of it to a new page – partly because there is nothing I like more than making lists and partly because if I don't write it down somewhere, I'll ...
In Full: Nick Clegg's remarks at inter-faith event in London: A message of hope over fear, of commun...
Nick Clegg attended an inter-faith event in North London, designed to show solidarity between the diverse communities in the capital, in the wake of the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby. He didn't have a script, but thankfully someone was taking notes. Here is the full text of his remarks: Can I thank you all very, very much for being here and can I thank, particularly, everybody at the Centre, all the - all the volunteers here, everyone from the Peabody operation. You - you've helped us to organise this at very, very short notice indeed. It was a suggestion made ...
The BBC reports that Nick Clegg has been speaking at an interfaith event in London set up after the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich on Wednesday. He told representatives of a number of faiths: Terrorism has no religion because there is no religious conviction that can justify the kind of arbitrary, savage random violence that we saw on the streets of Woolwich. He concluded his remarks by quoting a verse from the Koran: If anyone slays a human being, it shall be as though he killed all mankind; whereas, if anyone saves a life, it shall be as ...
This is the judgment in McAlpine v Bercow. I always expected Sally Bercow to lose this case. This is the key paragraph The Defendant does not have any burden of proof in the issue I have to decide. She does not have to offer an alternative explanation of why a peer, whose name and career is known to few members of the public today, might have been trending on 4 November 2012 without her
I received a message on Facebook today which was a status that had been shared by a friend. The message was from a 'hard working Brit' whose heroes are fellow Brits and is truly patriotic in every way. This Facebook post refers to British situations but I had a suspicion that it might be based on something American as it refers to "cops" rather than "police", for instance. So I did a quick Google search and found and this tells me that it started in America. "Nigel Farage did not write the article. The message is just the latest ...

The Parish of Sandgate is now the proud holder of a "Seaside Award' as judged by the 'Keep Britain Tidy' organisation. It is the only beach in Shepway awarded this year. Councillors, businesses, members of the local community and officers at Shepway District Council have worked together to achieve this prestigious award. To be successful, the Sandgate community had to demonstrate its commitment to providing a high quality beach environment for residents and visitors. The beach management group wanted to use the village's greatest amenity - the beach - to boost tourism in the area. Good beach access, toilet facilities, ...

After a long 10+ year battle prolongued due to Spanish claims over sovereignty of the Rock, the Gibraltar Football Association has been admitted as a full member of European Football's governing body, UEFA. The UEFA President Michel Platini made the announcement following the vote by hand of delegates during the XXXVII Ordinary UEFA Congress in London. The positive vote by delegates was

In September 2012, I outlined my goals for 2013 on the Cappuccino CC facebook page - Etape du Dales in under 7 hrs for Gold in May and La Marmotte in under 9 hrs (Gold for vets) in July. I had been told by an ex club member that I'd never get Gold for the Etape! A big winter of training - mostly at steady state - and strength training, on and off the bike. Hours and hours in zone three. Often in foul weather. So far so good. All change on the equipment - my warranty replacement for an ...

I want to say a few personal words to my party friends and colleagues, straight and gay, after this week's debates and votes on the same-sex marriage bill. I voted for the second reading of the bill but abstained at third reading. I tried to make clear my reasons in my three speeches on the bill in February and this week. Please read them carefully. Some of you may be pleased or relieved that some Liberal Democrat MPs, including me, voted for amendments and against third reading or abstained on third reading. You may share our beliefs on this issue ...
Area Committee is next Tuesday 4th June, 6pm at Bolshaw Primary School, Cross Road, Heald Green. We have four planning applications. Two of them are for new hot food take-aways (the old Nat West in Gatley and a florists in Heald Green). I'm personally opposed to more hot food takeaways in Gatley, as I've previously said but because the new planning rules haven't yet come in, I don't know if there are planning grounds for the Council to refuse the application. There's a proposal for new double yellow lines at the junction of Schools Hill and Brackenwood Drive. These just ...
One of my biggest concerns in recent years has been the effect of access to easily available internet pornography on the next generation of young people. Every time I ask an expert in the field to reassure me and tell me that I'm panicking too much, they shake their head and tell me that my fears are spot on.It just takes a couple of clicks to arrive at free videos which depict women in a subjugative role, as little more than receptacles. The language used about those women is demeaning and deeply misogynistic. The expectations of a generation of boys ...
Victors can choose between mangaminity and tyranny. The Labour Party chooses tyranny. The Annual Meeting of the council on Wednesday was the usual self-congratulatory occasion, and in fairness the Labour Party has much to celebrate. Across the county they won a resounding county council election victory – though not in Consett. But that doesn't have to lead to a gloating session where you rub the noses of your opponents in the dust by excluding them from positions of influence everywhere that you legally can. Now there's not even a token vice-chairmanship of scrutiny committes to "friendly" independent or two. The ...
This week I had the opportunity to challenge the Labour council leader Peter John asking why community council meetings now cost £36,040 each! I asked him "Will the leader consider returning to eight community council areas and allowing chairs to manage the existing budget more efficiently?" In 2011/12 the council spend £1,376,003 to hold 52 community councils and 61 planning community council meetings - so they each cost £12,166. This year the council will spend £901,000 to hold 25 community council meetings so each cost £36,040. This is partly because the 8 previous community councils have be squashed and squeezed ...
The debate on tax avoidance by large companies is descending into farce and the scary thing about this is that no one seems to be pointing this out. So here is my attempt at pointing at the emperor. For what seems like the last month tax campaigners and MPs have been pointing at company sales figures and comparing them to the corporation tax they pay and saying companies are not paying their 'fair share' but without defining what a fair share would be. The people doing this (and I do include MPs as people) are either ignorant of the tax ...
As slogans go, 'Stronger economy. Fairer society', is a pretty good one. But I can't help thinking that we have a bit of an imbalance in favour of the latter. Pupil premium, raising the income tax threshold to £10,000, pension triple lock – great policies for a fairer society. What are the equivalent policies for a stronger economy? You might be able to think of a few, but they're certainly not as prominent, and some positions, reducing the deficit for example, are not exactly unique to the Liberal Democrats. Perhaps that's alright though, there are probably many in the party ...
The Telegraph reported yesterday that EU is to drop the idiotic "olive oil jug ban" after public outcry. In case you missed the story, Brussels bureaucrats had decided that it was in the interests of the consumer to ban the use of jugs, cruets or bowls to serve olive oil in restaurants. It was justified as necessary because of alleged "frequent" fraud in restaurants and we, the public, required help for our own good. Never mind that such legislation could well have seen the end to many small artisan olive oil producers who rely on the restaurant trade for their ...
The spending review is looming and rumours abound of cuts or changes that could damage UK science. The latest concerns the fate of the Medical Research Council. The latest in a long line of government spending reviews, this one covering the period 2015-16, is looming - and many in the science community are getting worried. In the last such review, in 2010, the UK's science budget was nominally frozen and is supposedly protected from being raided by the parent ministry, the department for Business, Innovation and Skills. However, rumours abound, and the coincidence of a spending review in which non ...

The sudden warm, dry weather earlier this month had pushed Spring headlong into an early Summer only to slam on the brakes again with temperatures dropping and rain, sleet and hail arriving this week. Finally it seems the frosts are past and even the beech trees are now in leaf. The downside to the crazy weather, (although we have little to complain about when you see the devastation wreaked abroad by cyclones, storms and flooding) is the lack of butterflies this Spring. I have only seen one comma, one brimstone, one peacock, one speckled wood and a couple of orange ...

It was interesting, though not unexpected, that following the appalling attrocity in Woolwich, many of the usual voices re-emerged calling for the reinstatement of the communications data bill that Nick Clegg quite correctly blocked a few months ago. These included former Labour Home Secretary, John Reid, former First Sea Lord and security minister, Lord West, and former Security legislation reviewer and Liberal Democrats peer, Lord Carlile. It should be noted that none of these are in government at present and so do not have access to all the information about the attack. That is why I am more than inclined ...
Ever since 1992, when I saw green dollars in action in New Zealand, I've been fascinated by the idea that we should be able to conjure money out of nothing, by using our social networks. My complementary currency heydays are now behind me but, during the 1990s, I found that I had got to know almost everyone involved in the idea of new kinds of money in the world - from Michael Linton in Canada (LETS and Community Way) to Heloise Primavera in Argentina (Global Barter Clubs). I still think these ideas are important, and especially now that the Eurozone ...

Last night, I attended the latest meeting of Harris Academy Parent Council. Further to the information given to the Harris Academy Project Board on 24th April, there was an update on school transport arrangements to the Rockwell site from August. The Parent Council was given detail of the likely routes of the re-routed "S" school buses. The current 1S and 22S services that go to the Perth Road site will obviously not be required when the school is relocated during the rebuild project and will be replaced by two new services - the 11S and 12S (note change of service ...
The first thing to say is a big thank you to the organising committee for an excellent 5 days of festivities from 15th to 19th May - a good job well done and hopefully to be repeated year on year. Secondly, thanks to the Aintree and Maghull Champion for their excellent coverage. I must admit that in these days of sound bite news I feared a single photo and a few lines but the paper and of course their ace local reporter Jim (The News Hound) Sharpe did the festival proud. But what about Down Under? Well this goes back ...
NationBuilder is fast becoming one of the most important technology suppliers to the UK political campaigning market. Figures released this week have shown that the proportion of patients with suspected cancer starting treatment within two months of diagnosis has hit their lowest rate. The Welsh Labour Government has a target for 95% of urgent patients to be seen by a specialist within 62 days, but statistics published this morning show that over the most recent quarter, only 83.6% of these cases had started definitive treatment within this time period. This is the lowest the figure has been. It is disturbing to see how cancer waiting times are getting worse. 62 days is already a incredibly long time ...
