"People will never feel nostalgic about diesels they way they do about steam locomotives," my elders used to say. In fact, railway enthusiasm continued to thrive through the 1970s and only became terminally unfashionable - even to be taken as a symptom of learning disability - after that. I would suggest that the high point of this enthusiasm was the last run of the Deltics on the East Coast main line. By the time I was a student at York these wonderful throaty diesels had been displaced from the Scottish expresses and were in charge of the stopping trains to ...

After a bruising week Kingston Lib Dem councillors have chosen a new leader - Cllr Liz Green - following the resignation of Derek Osbourne after his arrest on child porn charges. But if they are hoping that their choice of his long term deputy will draw a line under this event they may be sadly mistaken. Green has been a key member of the administration - which last year was rocked by a scandal over a failure to properly protect children in its care and an earlier cover up by social workers in the murder of Charito Cruz. Tuesday Did you see that the Cleggs went skiing in Switzerland at Easter? I have been telling them for years that if this is Their Sort Of Thing then they should consider a stay in the north of Rutland. There, where the snowy peaks rise to meet the Lincolnshire Wolds, sport can be had that is the equal of any the Swiss can offer; moreover, our cheese does not have holes in it and you will not find yourself obliged to drink the dreadful gassy Dahrendorf lager in the evenings. Stephen Twigg made an effort to move on Labour's policy on free schools in his speech this week, but he is not there yet. Take his complaint that: Under Michael Gove's policy, millions have been spent opening schools in areas with a surplus of places, while children elsewhere face a shortage of places.I pointed out the flaw in this argument when Labour was still in power: Surplus capacity will tend to exist in areas where the schools are bad, because parents there are more likely to pay to send their children to independent schools or to make more effort to ...
