[IMG: shutterstock_151488752] Confused yet? The popular browser extension AdBlock for Chrome/Chromium and Safari has launched a new crowdsourced campaign - to buy up internet advertising space inviting people to download AdBlock, so they can block ads. Additionally, if they raise enough, they'd like to get additional space for a billboard at Times Square, a full page spread in the New York Times, and even a TV slot at the Superbowl (although the target for this is $4.2M, so I'm not entirely confident they'll make it.) However, this does raise an interesting question, which has been under debate for some time. ...

I have written before about Dennis O'Neill, a boy whose death scandalised the country in 1945. He was starved and beaten to death by the couple with whom he and his brother had been placed after being taken into public care. One reason that their suffering was not identified was that the O'Neill brothers had been taken into care by Newport council in South Wales and placed with a couple in Shropshire. And Shropshire County Council did not seem to have much concern for the welfare of children for whom another authority was responsible. You might have hoped that things ...

Last week we identified a total of 46 schools which, in their sex and relationships education policies, still either replicated the controversial section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 which forbade local authorities from promoting homosexuality in schools, or stated that the law (which was repealed in 2003) is still in force. Section 28 stated that a local authority 'shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality' or 'promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship'. In practice, the effect of this meant that ...

Liberal Democrat conference goers are shaping up to a confrontation in three weeks' time over economic policy. On the one hand the leadership wants to defend the current coalition government's record; on the other many activists feel that this policy has been a dismal failure. This confrontation has been brewing for some years. It reflects a wider controversy in the country at large, though one senses that most people are now moving on. In this argument it does not usually take long before the government's critics refer to the experience of the 1930s recession, or Depression, to back up their ...

So when I learned that there was a Liberal Democrat Christian Forum and they'd embarked on a new publication entitled "Liberal Democrats do God" my interest was piqued. At £6.67 on Amazon, I was somewhat surprised when it arrived at its rather lightweight look and feel. At just 70-80 pages, this is no War and Peace. 3D Printing Fossils

I've just discovered the amazing 3D Fossils site of the British Geological Survey. The GB3D Type Fossils Online project, funded by JISC, aims to develop a single database of the type specimens, held in British collections, of macrofossil species and subspecies found in the UK, including links to photographs (including 'anaglyph' stereo pairs) and a selection of 3D digital models. What that means is that they have thousands of British fossils available as freely downloadable 3D models! Even better, all the models are Creative Commons (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3). So, I decided to experiment with printing out a Fossil on the 3D ...

At the moment the yield on the UK's five year government gilts is 1.65%. What this means in plain English is that if our government wanted to borrow £1,000 it would have to pay back £1,083 in five years. In contrast, if you or I or a business went to the bank and ask to borrow the same amount for five years we'd be looking at paying back well over £1,500 by the end of the loan. What this tells us is that our government can borrow money very, very cheaply. It can borrow it at less than the rate ...

I don't have a lot of time for Jamie Oliver. I don't like his shrill moralising and the way he is feeding into the zeitgeist of demonising poor and working class communities. (What they eat and drink, who they sleep with, how they pass their spare time is all fair game for middle class lovvies) Even when he is right (after all, even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day) he can't help but couch it in terms that demonise the less well off. From the Shropshire Star: A large black panther-like creature has made a reappearance in Shropshire. Jack Humphrey, 20, was driving home from work at the William Withering pub in Wellington in the early hours when he says the creature leapt in front of his car. He said: "I was driving past the new houses in Trench Lock, where the roofing centre is, when it ran across the road. It was huge. "It must have been three times the size of a fox and it was jet black. "Its tail was thin and long, it was definitely a panther."

Tuesday: One day, I would hope, people will stop thinking that the solution to a problem is to throw ordinance at it. But apparently that's not today. No, today we are talking about curing cows by shooting badgers and curing a civil war by lobbing bombs into Syria. Since being dead means they don't have TB any more this is supposed to be "better for the badgers too"; presumably Lord Blairimort - hmm, "TB" - will pop up shortly to make the same argument about Syrians. Struggling over Syria

I am really struggling with the question of what to do in Syria. On one hand, you have an evil and brutal regime who has no problem with gassing its own people. It didn't just get evil after the Arab spring, though. It's Amnesty report from 2007 tells of torture, imprisonment on political grounds and other human rights abuses. There is no doubt that repression has gone off the scale in the last two years, though, from the murder and destruction in Homs to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime last week. I wasn't going to blog about this, because "man wants to generate publicity for his TV programme" is not news, but honestly, the naked bigotry on display by Jamie Oliver today takes some beating. So I'm going to go through a few of his "points" and try to explain why he needs to pull his head out of his arse. Why can poor people afford big TVs but not good food? [IMG: nuclear-power-station] Liberal Democrats should vote to support nuclear power at the 2013 conference. I say this after 20 years campaigning against nuclear power, including five years as head of Greenpeace UK. Nuclear is not perfect. But it is better than fossil fuels. The best form of energy is energy efficiency. Next best are renewables. But however efficient we get, and however fast we expand wind, it will take many decades before we can be entirely reliant on renewables. Denmark has set itself a target of 2050 for this.
