I was invited to the official opening at the new Herron Bakery today at Beamish Museum. I am on the joint committee that runs Beamish as a representative of Gateshead Council. This is one of my most enjoyable committees. Beamish is radically different from the traditional perception of museums (stuffy with lots of exhibits in glass cases). It has working exhibits, rebuilt towns and villages
I should be blogging about Syria or about Conference or HS2 or the economy But honestly BBC Question Time The eve of Lib Dem conference The first Question Time of the new season An ex Minister says she won't stand again because of the leader (yes, I paraphrase) The Party President makes overtures to Labour There's a Christians vs the Lions fight raging And they don't see fit to find a single Lib Dem to appear Words fail me
Now, folks, there's been something going on for a little while that I haven't mentioned to many people and haven't blogged about. Some months ago I applied for the parliamentary selection process in North East Somerset. I applied because it's an area that I care about, and I applied because I knew there wasn't a chance I'd come anywhere near getting it, and that it would be a great experience. Last night, I was selected by the good members of North East Somerset and I'll go on to fight Jacob Rees-Mogg (amongst others) at the next General Election. I can't ...

[IMG: image] [IMG: image] [IMG: image] I've been doing a recce. I was here for the last federal conference in the 1990s, so I know how the land lies. Bejeepers! What have we next to the SECC?! Unbeknownst to the BBC and STV over the Clyde, and the Daily Record next door, a flying saucer has landed and green men are walking around it! Aliens threatening the Leader's Speech! And my goodness, what is this giant cocoon near the SECC, with, no doubt, a giant feral butterfly due to emerge just in time to wreck questions to the Federal Conference ...

Liberal Democrat Voice tells us that a chapter of Paddy Ashdown's bestselling autobiography A Fortunate Life has been released as a free download. Helen Duffett writes there: It's called 1983 - The Winning of Yeovil, and as I wrote in 2009: MP also stands for Military Precision, so it's no surprise that Paddy Ashdown's campaign to become MP for Yeovil was long on discipline and short on creature comforts. If you haven't packed a book for the train to Conference yet, 1983 - The Winning of Yeovil is vital reading for all Liberal Democrat campaigners. And as is typical of ...

Two free events to help residents find out how they can make their homes warmer and cheaper to run this winter are taking place on Saturday (14 September). The events in Fulbourn and Bassingbourn will feature fun interactive displays to show people of all ages the different ways they can go green to save energy and money. The events are the latest in a series organised by groups involved in South Cambridgeshire District Council's award winning Sustainable Parish Energy Partnership and show how inexpensive DIY options to the professional installation of better insulation, heating upgrades and renewable energy solutions can ...
Residents are being put in the budget setting driving seat by Cambridgeshire County Council. 'You Choose' is a county-wide survey, launched this week to ask residents to put themselves in the seat of councillors in making decisions where to invest and save money. Cambridgeshire County Council is expected to make further savings over the next year of around £39 million. This is following savings of £42 million last year, and a further £32 million this current financial year. These savings have to be made whilst supporting and investing in services such as adult social care, protecting children, boosting the economy ...

After several years, the charity of which I am a trustee, Practical Compassion for Destitute Children, now has its own website. http://www.practical-compassion.co.uk We're a small Tyneside-based charity, and we sponsor children in the Holy Land, and work across the divides, with people from all religions and races in that troubled part of the world. As we are all volunteers, nothing we receive in sponsorship or donations is spent on administration, we are a truly grass-root charity, and it's humbling to see how the support we receive for the children we help really gives them and their families a massive boost ...
Cambridgeshire County Councillor, Ian Manning is pushing for joined-up thinking in a bid to solve the problems facing residents living in Cambridge's Fen Road. Ian, who represents East Chesterton, will be speaking at a meeting of South Cambs District Council Cabinet this evening (Thursday, September 12) calling for better consultation with residents on changes to one end of the road that affect residents living at the other. The road crosses from East Chesterton into South Cambs territory and decisions are made by three local authorities - Cambridge City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and South Cambs District Council. Ian will be ...
Channel 4 News tonight gave a tantalising glimpse of Liz MacKean's Dispatches programme, to be shown in full later. Of course, one has total sympathy for the apparent victims who have suffered hell for years. But the piece had me thinking who on earth would gain from trying to put the mockers on proper investigation of these allegations at the time the incidents apparently took place? Who are these "powerful forces" who sat on files which exposed the situation? It would certainly be the first time I've heard the Liberal Party of 1974-1979, with just 14 MPs, described as a ...
I do like a good tram, and Brussels is an excellent place to find one. Here's a shot of the interior of one of the new pre-Metro trams, which I took the opportunity to ride this afternoon. What it demonstrates is that you can build a public service vehicle which is efficient and stylish. Compare and contrast with my friends at Greater Anglia, who continue to struggle with aged, decrepit rolling stock and poor infrastructure. Depressing, really...
The Liberal Democrat Voice Awards are but three days away. At 10 pm on Saturday 14 September, in Castle 2 of the Crowne Plaza, with cash bar on hand, and an imaginative dress code, the best in blogging, campaigning, social media and politics in general will be feted in a ceremony filled with razzmatazz, glitz and glamour. The Social Liberal Forum's amendments to Nick Clegg's economy motion - supported by an unprecedented number of voting representatives - seek to ensure that the party retains distinctive, independent economic narrative up to and beyond the next election. The narrative behind Nick's motion - which, to be clear, has a great deal that Liberal Democrats can be proud of - is clear enough. Here is the rationale behind our amendments. On housing, the motion highlights government guarantee schemes that are yet to scratch the surface of the housing shortage, and recognises that "house building remains well below historical averages." The ...

I believe Trident is the UK's last, unreformed bastion of Cold War thinking. And I believe we can adapt our nuclear deterrent to the threats of the 21st century by ending 24-hour patrols when we don't need them and procuring fewer submarines. This is the conclusion I draw from the Trident Alternatives Review that the Coalition Government published in July - a Review that clearly would not have happened without Lib Dems in Government. But when the Review was published, some of our critics claimed any changes to Trident would seriously damage our relationship with the US. So I went ...
It is said that the beating of a butterfly's wings on one side of the planet can cause a tsunami on the other side. We have always been somewhat dubious of this factoid. However we can now say that the stance taken by those LibDem MPs who broke ranks with the government's rush to war in Syria can now be seen, in their own way, to have directly derailed the bombing and now we have the Syrian regime (supposedly) agreeing to yield up its chemical weapons: The deed is not yet done but when it is, will we harvest ...
[IMG: The Rock] You can see the Euro-sceptics' logic. They say: We get rules imposed on us by Brussels, so why not leave the EU and be like Norway. Problem. In fact, at least at the moment we have a seat at the table. We have influence on the rules as one of 28. Norway, as a member of EEA has to follow all the rules anyway but has no influence at all on their forming. So 1 out of 28 or zero out of 28. You decide. photo by: Crowbared [IMG: Post to Twitter] Tweet This Post
Like many people reading the front page of the Guardian this morning, I was worried by the headline on the pronouncements by the UN special rapporteur on the removal of the spare room subsidy. But it is important to look behind the headline to see that these comments were based on a very brief visit from this adviser, who did not have the time for a detailed discussion with the Department for Work and Pensions to understand the policy. If she had done she would have been able to understand that this policy brings the rules for the social housing ...
Having lamented conservative Christian's tendency to overemphasise sexual morality, it is only fair to share the reasons I think Liberal Christians don't talk about it nearly enough. I was told growing up that going to University was the pinnacle of all human achievement, that it would set me up for life. I didn't do well in my A-levels and university became out of my reach, so I began working in students' unions instead. Now, as an apprentice in Tom Brake's office, I am gaining knowledge, developing new skills and working towards a qualification - all whilst making a difference in the local area. It has made me passionate to do more; I will be standing to be a councillor at next year's local elections. I've come a ...
I have, it might appear, taken a rather wrong turning en route to Glasgow. The beer is trappist, the time zone one ahead, although there may be more Liberal Democrats within a five mile radius than might be the case in my beloved Creeting St Peter. I do have a good reason to be in Brussels though, in that I'm here to lend my intellectual weight to the Financial Advisory Committee of ALDE, Europe's liberal umbrella party. I've read my papers, submitted my thoughts on the ethics of political fundraising, mulled over accounts (I knew that the bookkeeping course would ...

It has not been a good week for Wales Labour as just a cursory glance at today's Western Mail will reveal. They carry a series of articles that indicate that the party's 14 year management of the Welsh NHS has left the service in crisis. The most damning is the claim by Labour MP, Ann Clwyd that the National Health Service in Wales is in a worse situation than in England. She has been tasked with conducting a review of the NHS in England since she took a public stand about the health service following her husband Owen Roberts' death ...
It really is quite extraordinary how much of our newspapers are taken up by two kinds of stories, which now seem to dwarf the rest. One is allegations of various kinds of sex abuse, the other is the gamut of possible scandals around care, services, measurement and inspection. When the history of the 2010s come to be written - and it would be nice to think I might write it myself - we may have to understand our obsession with these issues. I'm not, of course, saying they are unimportant. I am though wondering why they take up quite so ...
Contrary to general opinion I really have nothing against party conference. Indeed, I have been twice and enjoyed Scarborough in 1975 and Llandudno in 1976. But ever since then I've simply never made it. By elections, dear boy, by elections. Indeed September and October by elections are such a regular feature of our local calendar I almost wonder if it's not deliberate. Some wicked Tory plot to keep me away....

The last time I wrote a piece for Lib Dem Voice I asked for the assistance of conference voting reps to ensure that party conference debates the detention of David Miranda and the reform of Schedule 7 of the Terrorism 2000 - Labour legislation – under which he was detained. A very big thank you to those who responded with support for Emergency Motion 6: Schedule 7 of Terrorism Act 2000 to be in the ballot for debate in Glasgow next Wednesday (Sep 18th from 9:00 to 10.30, item F38). Party in a pickle over porn. What were the Federal Conference Committee thinking? #talknottech #ldco...
I was pleased that the party was going to be discussing online pornography, its effect on children and what to do about it at its conference. Here was the chance to get some sensible, evidence based policy made on a subject that the Daily Mail could write rubbish about forever. The motion, however, didn't fill me with joy. It recognises that there is an issue with easy access to online pornography, but the approach it takes is a technological one. No doubt it'll be presented as radical because it's not going to force filters on everybody, as David Cameron wants, ...
Amid general agreement on the thrust of Julie Smith's Committee's excellent paper, and gratitude that Nick Harvey and Danny Alexander have delivered unprecedented transparency on the UK's nuclear options, next Tuesday's debate on defence offers two sharply differing views of the future of Britain's nuclear future. On the one hand, there is Nick Harvey's proposal to retain the Trident missiles, their warheads and associated infrastructure, but reducing our purchase of new Trident submarines from four to two. This means that from the early 2030s, the UK will no longer be able to mount the standing patrols of Continuous At-Sea Deterrence ...

The Lib Dem conference directory is published as a pdf. It has fringe listings, and handy maps. Except that, incomprehensibly, the maps are badly compressed bitmaps. The maps are also available as high quality images, and it's trivial (with Apple's OSX "print preview" app, for example) to replace the crap maps with the good ones. It took me about 10 minutes, which is why I don't understand why

When the four hour A&E waiting time target was missed in England, Labour in Westminster described the NHS as being in a state of chaos. They must feel a great sense of embarrassment when they look over the border to here in Wales where that particular target has never been met. As the report published today by the Auditor General for Wales looking at unscheduled care acknowledges, waiting times have generally increased over recent years with far too many patients, particularly the elderly, being forced to wait over 12 hours. It is a disgrace that anyone should have to wait ...

I've found (and disclosed) what I think is an interesting little security flaw in Facebook's Two-Factor Authentication usage. First thing's first, this isn't a show-stopping bug. It's more of a curiosity which shows how different providers treat the verification of Two-Factor Authentication. Details If you are a security conscious user, you should have set up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). Every time you try to log in to Facebook, after providing the correct password, you are send a security code via SMS. If you enter the code correctly, you're let in. It looks a bit like this. Earlier this week I launched my Fairer Delivery Charges campaign. The campaign calls on online retailers to end excessive delivery surcharges and to make surcharges more transparent on their websites. People in the North East of Scotland and in the Highlands and Islands are fed up with the excessive surcharges that some online retailers charge. The campaign is about making sure that consumers no longer have to pay these ridiculous surcharges. Recent examples from constituents that have contacted me include someone who lives five miles outside of Aberdeen being charged £60 instead of £20 for delivery and someone else being ...
Vote UK has a full round up of last week's elections and Lib Dem Voice reports more on the one bright spot of the evenings results - the Lib Dem gain in Wadebridge in Cornwall. The Lib Dems failed to gain Ely East with their vote falling nearly 9% since 2011 and otherwise came behind Labour and UKIP everywhere they stood - with the exception of Boston Fenside where they outpolled Labour 87 to 75 (UKIP gained the seat as expected). In total 1,012 people voted Lib Dem in the six wards (out of ten) they stood in - fewer ...

On Saturday the Liberal Democrats' main annual conference starts, this year in Glasgow. As this parliament moves from mid-term to end-game, the party's professionals will no doubt want us to focus on the fight for survival at the next General election, scheduled for 2015. I am more worried about the party's soul. Being part of a coalition government has been a searing experience for the party. It remains strong in some areas, but it is much weaker through most of the country, as members, activists and supporters have drifted away. In national opinion polls the party languishes at about 10%, ...

To help with that, it's available entirely for free, at http://www.withouthotair.com – although you can buy a copy if, like me, you think you'll want to keep it to hand. The first thing we can do is reduce our ...

The ruling Conservative group on Herts County Council are making no changes to the controversial and highly unpopular turning off of most street lights at night.
