Everyone has a different perspective on this last year, for me just looking at how things have degenerated in public life, I've little confidence, that things are likely to improve. In Thanet,it seems to me that in particular, Labour has shown themselves to be at the very least, less tolerant of scrutiny. It's easy to understand why given the thinly spread talent that makes up Labours front bench. Thanet councillors seem to expect the mere fact of being elected demands respect, whereas those of us in the real world know that is earned. In my view, Thanet council officers and ...

Christmas (Day not Town): How can you have a duck pond if there aren't any ducks? How can you have Time if there aren't any Time Lords. The Time of the Doctor was everything you would expect from the capstone of the Matt Smith era: beautiful, touching character moments; ingenious, retrospective plot explanations; and ever so slightly not as good as he deserved. We got answers: what were the cracks, who blew up the TARDIS, where the Pandorica Alliance came from, the origins of River Song, what "Silence Will Fall" actually means. What we were missing, though, was a story. ...

14 Predictions for 2014

It is that time of year once again to dust of my crystal ball and try and work out that is going to happen over the next twelve months. 1. An Olympic medalist will make a statement/protest about LGBT rights live on the Olympic Broadcaster. This will be the reason why we were right to let the athletes attend the Games at least one of them will make a protest and it will be the LGBT communities 1968 Black Power moment. 2. After the 400 bomb alearts, some of them viable, in Northern Ireland in 2013 one of the ones ...

My top posts of 2013

Here are my top ten posts - at least in terms of pageviews. Oddly enough, they all seemed to make sense at the time... 1. Does Better Together care about free speech? I suggest the "no" campaign should distance itself from Ian Taylor. 2. Are we a party that supports Northern Isles separation? A pertinent question following a vote at Scottish spring conference. 3. 50 Lib Dems you must follow on twitter. A list of Lib Dem twitterati I find interesting, entertaining or otherwise compelling. 4. Is there a need for a UK Constitutional Convention? I suggest there is, but ...

Three days ago I received a post on my Facebook news feed which was entitled 'Top Ten Tory Lies of 2013 and had been shared by a Labour supporter. I subsequently placed it on my timeline and added this comment - "I received this photo on my news feed yesterday. It is a shoddy piece of work by Labour supporters, not referencing any sources to justify either what it says are Tory claims or its supposed refutation of those claims. You're just supposed to take it all on trust. Well, while I'm no apologist for the Tories, I do think ...

We've had part 1. We've had part 2. We've even had part 3. But something is missing. So here is part 4. October Ad Lib magazine appears to have decided it can get along without me, but I did write a column for its first year mythologising the mighty Chief Whip: "...and I can't be in two places at one time," I finished triumphantly. "Nonsense," said the Chief Whip, "I do it all the time. Go back out and get him to vote."I explained who John Moore was for my younger readers and welcomed Norman Baker to the Home Office. ...

My predictions for 2014

Clyde - will the mascot be quickly forgotten after the games? As is customary at this time of year, I make public a number of my predictions for the coming year. Enjoy them - before they come true! Politics The Labour Party - Ed Miliband will struggle to convince the British public that he is a Prime Minister in the making. His party will continue to maintain a lead in the polls, but his personal credibility will take a battering when he concedes that a Labour government would effectively have its hands tied on the spending front. He will also ...

Remember Richard Reeves, Nick Clegg's former head of strategy? He left about 18 months ago but has written a couple of pieces in recent days, one for the Guardian and another for the Centre Forum blog. In his Guardian piece, he suggests that it's after 2020 that the Liberal Democrats will really reap the rewards of our performance in Government. His theory is that we'll do well enough to stay in government in 2015 and by 2020 we will have killed "the presumption of one-party government." At Centre Forum's blog, he concentrates on Nick Clegg and his achievements and opportunities: ...

New Year's Day 2014 has become an almost totemic date in the British political and media calendar over recent months. Well, that is when the whole of Bulgaria and Romania are due to turn up uninvited on Britain's doorstep. Isn't it? Rarely has a single event been so buried in misconceptions, misunderstandings, and downright misinformation. It all started with the Eastleigh by-election, where UKIP claimed that 'next year, the EU will allow 29 million Bulgarians and Romanians (i.e. the entire population of the two countries) to come to the UK'. They were effectively testing their electoral masterplan: tying a dull ...

The debate about our Lib Dem hero of 2013 has thrown up a number of names. The campaign to pardon Alan Turing, led by William Jones, John Leech and John Sharkey would, in normal circumstances get my vote – but this was the year that saw the passing of Stan Hardy. Stan, was an exceptional man – someone who truly encompassed everything a Liberal should. 'A worker... a winner' is a bit of a Lib Dem cliche, but Stan was exactly that. Remembering John Fortune

The comedian John Fortune has died. He was one of the pioneers of the satire boom of the early 1960s and later he and John Bird had their own short-lived situation comedy Well Anyway. He and Bird found their greatest fame with Rory Bremner. Such was the uselessness of the Conservative opposition through most of the Blair and Brown years that the three of them sometimes seemed to be forming the official Opposition. Here they are Bird and Fortune in 2008. It was John Fortune's turn to be George Parr and this week he was an adviser to Gordon Brown. ...

Ahead of both the 2005 and 2015 general elections there was a key Liberal Democrat Parliamentary by-election win which massively altered the political atmosphere ahead of that general election - motivating activists, persuading media commentators and influencing the public. One was Brent East in 2003, the other Eastleigh in 2013. The impact of both is all the clearer if you consider what the impact of missing out on the gain in 2003 or slumping to defeat in 2013 would have meant. Dr. Richard Haass the American diplomat who was chairing talks in Northern Ireland is flying home after another all night session on the 7th draft of his proposals to deal with Northern Ireland's past, parades and flags. One of the more enjoyable television highlights this Christmas was watching David Jason reprise his role as Granville in Still Open All Hours, which aired Boxing Day on BBC One. Open All Hours, with the much-missed Ronnie Barker in the role of Arkwright, the tight-fisted grocer, first appeared on our screens in 1976. Judging by the appearance of the shop, little changed (except the prices) in the intervening 37 years. Being a review of 2013, from my FourSquare check-in and blogging perspective :-) The year started off cold and snowy in Woking. I was busy teaching a Code Club in the local library.
