Southport (1958)

This film dates back to 1958 and features many Southport attractions - Pleasureland, Peter Pan's Playground, the sea bathing lake, the zoo, Lord Street and show jumping at the Flower Show. It comes with a commentary by the famous BBC announcer Alvar Liddell.

When I went to see this show, two weeks ago, I planned to write a review that night. It's taken two weeks, because I ended up a little more involved in the show than I expected... Lightning Strikes was a show I'd been looking forward to for months, since first seeing a flier for it [...]

In a time when there is so much unpleasantness on the internet, especially in the sphere of politics, it is occasionally nice to be reminded that quality tends to outlast outrage, that humour outlasts insult, and this was brought to mind recently when, in my capacity as Newsletter Editor for my Local Party, I was asked if it was possible to publish Lord Bonkers' Diary for the edification of our members. Admittedly, I wasn't entirely convinced that it would work here in Mid Suffolk, but I gave my word to ask. And it dawned on me that, if our Chair ...

Shop of the Week

The high street shop I'd like to promote this week is Cards For All Occasions, Trelowarren Street. Next door to the old New Connexions church, and previously home to the JAG mobile phone shop, this business has been trading for a couple of years now, selling quality cards and giftware. In particular their Cornish gifts range always has something suitable for an emergency present! I can also recommend their wide variety of greetings cards, especially the Cornwall landscape and heritage scenes. Well worth supporting.

Today's Herald reports that Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond has offered what seems to me like a pretty substantial job in his constituency office as an unpaid internship. The First Minister sought a student to work for free on constituency casework at his Inverurie office near Aberdeen. But the voluntary post, advertised through Aberdeen University careers service, was condemned by political opponents and campaigners. In an embarrassing move for Mr Salmond, the pressure group Intern Aware reported the advert to the taxman, requesting an inquiry into whether the role should pay the minimum wage. The internship was advertised earlier this ...

Dear Councillor Hands, Thank you for your Freedom of Information request submitted to the Business Intelligence Unit on 13th January, regarding 'The Closed Libraries books, CD's, DVD's, Games, Computers and records'. Your request has been passed to me for response and you will find the related information supplied below. Please note that seven libraries have been closed, not five, as you outline in your letter. 1 How much money was made on the sale of books, CDs, DVDs, Games, Computers and records for each library? The library service does not offer Games, and the Computers belong to the Council's ICT ...

I'm pleased to say that we have a positive response to our complaints 'I thank you for your e-mail regarding the defects at the above location and would inform you that an instruction has been issued for the potholes to be repaired accordingly within the next 5 days.'

Thanks to all the residents who contacted me about the graffiti on Birkdale Library. I'm pleased to say that I managed to get the Council to remove it. It is bad enough that Bootle Labour Party has closed our library leaving only one library in Southport whilst maintaining three in Bootle without the building being disfigured with graffiti.

Ian Jack on Ian Nairn

There are still five days left on the BBC iPlayer to watch this week's moving documentary on Ian Nairn. Ian Jack, who appears in the documentary, remembers Nairn in his Guardian column today: A documentary on the BBC this week by Kate Misrahi caught his troubled personality very well - the hurt eyes, the voice that always seemed about to crack with melancholy - as it slowly drowned in a sea of beer. I knew him a little. He was kind about things I'd written, and once or twice I stopped at his table in our office local, the Blue ...

Over the years Birkdale Lib Dem Councillors have campaign to keep some of the things that give our town its character. We have sought to preserve the footpaths that are paved with the small blue tiles ( from Buckley in North Wales) that were laid by our Victorian forbears. We have also striven to maintain the civic colours on lamposts. This has been a hot topic recently as the council began removing old lamp standards and erectly ugly galvanised steel replacements. I'm pleased to say that after a lot of community pressure the cream and burgundy paint has been got ...

Last week I went along to Birkdale Primary for the opening of there new classrooms. The school started life as a Board School back in the 1885. School Boards were one of the first things that women could be elected to and the redoubtable Birkdale Liberal Kate Riley became the first women to be elected to a public body in the town when she joined the Birkdale School Board. The site is very small and the inventive architects came up with the idea of putting the playground on the roof in order to free up land for the extension.. I ...

An investigation by Birkdale Lib Dem Councillor Simon Shaw has revealed that one charity has cost Sefton Council £350,000 in lost rate income over the last four years on the two shops it operates in Southport - money that could have helped keep our lost library open. Healthy Planet is a national charity operating around 30 "Books for Free" stores around the country. In Southport they have one shop in Cambridge Walks and another in one of the large units next to Homebase at the Meols Cop Retail Park. Back in January Simon wrote to senior Council officers calling for ...

The news that Atos Healthcare are in negotiations to withdraw from their contract with the Department of Work and Pensions to carry out fitness-for-work tests has been welcomed by many, especially those who oppose the way the current assessment regime works. Images of protestors with Socialist Worker placards - never terribly helpful to my mind - and reports of death threats against Atos staff demonstrate the passion with which groups have fought against the way things are done. But I can't help feeling that Atos are the symptom, rather than the cure, and that simply replacing them will make little ...

That is not to say that Mr Boles has not been beavering away (cue the cuddly animal) on a strategy to make the concept into reality. [IMG: Alistair Carmichael speech Jan 2014] Secretary of State for Scotland Alistair Carmichael was on last night's Any Questions from Tiverton in Devon, just about as far away as you can get from his Orkney home. He told the Tory Nadim Zahawi off for raising the idea of capping child benefit at the second child, dismissing it as "not one of your better ideas." It was inevitable that there would be a question on food banks and I think that he tackled it quite well and thoughtfully. He said that the key to tackling poverty was to get more people ...

[IMG: ALDC Master Logo (for screen)] There were two principal by-elections yesterday, reports the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors (ALDC). In Birstall Wanlip ward of Charnwood Borough Council, Simon Sansome won a sensational victory for the Liberal Democrats coming from third place. On his second attempt Simon took 15% of the defending Conservative's vote and achieved a 7% majority. The Labour vote remained stable at 27%. As a Councillor for nearly 30 years now I share the concerns expressed in this article regarding some of the proposals by the Welsh Government to overhaul the planning system. The Western Mail reports that under the changes, the vast majority of planning applications will be dealt with by council officers with no involvement by elected members. All infrastructure projects will be handled by the National Assembly, with no input by local councillors to the decision. There is of course a case for major infrastructure projects to be dealt with on a Wales-wide basis but handing more power to unelected ...

It will come as no surprise to anyone that the House of Lords is dominated, at least in terms of membership numbers, by London and the South East - it's been a generally held assumption for years.
