[IMG: Featured on Liberal Democrat Voice] John Pugh has written an excellent posting for Lib Dem Voice and Stephen Hesketh (also of this parish) has added some important thoughts. John and I had a discussion at the weekend about this-and how it should impact on our leaflets. I went away thinking of doing a blog posting and had in my mind a quote from Jo Grimond which I have now found. 'The salient feature of British politics is not the conflict of class and class or Tory and Liberal and Labour, though these conflicts exist, it is the conflict between ...

[IMG: Featured on Liberal Democrat Voice] So appalled are some folk at UKIP that it has driven them back into the Lib Dem fold. Now a couple of chance encounters on a bank holiday afternoon don't amount to scientific evidence of a swing but they are interesting indicators never the less. First up I was walking back from Ainsdale after delivering postal vote letters when a car drew up beside me. 'I've got over the coalition, get me a poster board for the garden' said the driver. It didn't take moments to discover I had Mr Farage to thank for ...

There is a parody of a Ukip poster which may be seen on social media. To save you looking for it I will let you know the 'ten great reasons' that it mentions for voting Ukip. It is supposed to be a parody. The trouble is that I am willing to throw down another gauntlet (see previous blog), this time to Ukip and see if anyone wants to debate any of their policies. Here they are... Scrapping paid maternity leave Raising income tax for the poorest 88% of Britons Scrapping your holiday entitlement Speeding up privatisation of the NHS Cancelling ...

Visiting the Hop Garden

It is now nearly 5 years since I gave up my PAYE existence to spend my time growing my own food and being self-sufficient. I'm always on the outlook for events near to where I live which can help keep us self-sufficient. The Hop Garden is a community project in High Spen, a village in western Gateshead and only a few km from where I live. Yesterday they hosted a seed and plant swap event. I

"You might want to ask the relevant authorities what plans they have to downgrade services at Shotley Bridge Hospital". That was the email I received last week, and I guess it was referring to the proposals raised at this morning's Adults, Wellbeing and Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee today under a "Review of Urgent Care services in North Durham" of which I became aware last Friday. In essence the long term plan is to make the Urgent Care facility at Shotley nurse-led during daytime hours, doctor-led out of hours. The logic used is that 68% of the users of the ...

This evening, after my weekly surgeries at the West Park Centre and the Mitchell Street Centre, I took part in this week's City Council meetings. The Development Management Committee did not have any planning applications from the West End to consider. After this committee, the Policy & Resources Committee discussed Fire & Rescue and Police matters. I raised concerns about the rise in the number of deliberate secondary fires across the city and the Fire & Rescue service representative detailed steps the service (and the police) are taking to hopefully reduce this problem in the coming months. I also highlighted ...

This afternoon, along with my ward colleagues, Mr Laidlaw (Depute Head Teacher at Harris Academy) and Dundee City Council transportation officers, I took part in the latest meeting of the Harris Academy Transport Sub Group. The meeting is a sub-group of the Project Board overseeing the Harris New Build Project and looks specifically at the school transport issues. What is pleasing is that many of the issues about transport for West End-domiciled pupils have been tackled and bus operations are working well. However, if any parent/guardian has any concerns about the bus arrangements, do please contact me at home on ...

At the start of the month I showed you a nuclear flask train passing Appledore in Kent. The safety of these trains used to be a major concern of environmentalists. I remember one group standing on a suburban platform as one trundled past and waving a cardboard tube at it. They then said they could have been terrorists with a rocket launcher and this proved these workings should be stopped at once. So in 1984 the nuclear and rail authorities decided to stage a mock accident it which a derailed flask was hit by a locomotive going at full tilt. ...

Having advertised this blog as a source of information on the career of Roger Helmer, I had better pass on a link kindly sent to me by a reader. In 2006 the Lincolnshire blogger Fair Deal Phil reported that Helmer (still a Conservative MEP in those days) had written to a schoolgirl supporting the clubbing of baby seals. You may dismiss this as a minor point, but seals can come surprisingly far inland. My mother and late stepfather saw them following their boat on the Witham above Boston. Apparently there was some concern that the last Cornwall Council cabinet meeting was not told about spending on consultants and agency staff. There was a thought that this might have been because the spending had actually gone up. Launceston's town hall will be flying the Cornish flag of St Piran every day in the future. The decision was taken at the full council meeting last Friday. I was an enthusiastic supporter of the move put forward by Cllr Rob Tremain, the town crier. As the historic capital of Cornwall, I think it is important to reflect both our history and our position within Cornwall. It also reminds some that Cornwall continues east of Bodmin! The move was opposed by Cllr John Conway who pointed out that only 7% or so of Launceston residents wrote on their census forms ...

There are many challenges that face Britain today. Social and economic inequalities are still rife in society from people having to use food banks, to the issue of low wages and the problems caused by welfare reforms. Britain needs to rediscover its spirit of social justice, and its concern for the most disadvantaged members of society. When I first got interested in politics it was over the issues of civil liberties and my opposition to the War in Iraq. There was only ever one party that spoke to me on these issues and that truly inspired me, the Liberal Democrats. ...
