Figures uncovered by Liberal Democrats in the Borough of Redcar and Cleveland suggest that there is enough spare cash in the council's coffers to give residents a council tax cut in this year's budget. For the last three years, the council has turned down extra government grant to freeze council tax, instead hiking tax for local people. To make up for raising the tax in previous years, Liberal Democrats are calling on the Labour administration to use surplus reserves to give a tax cut this year - and still benefit from more than £600,000 a year in extra grant funding ...

A poem for equality

I'd love to be regarded as just a person but in Northern Ireland I am not.The DUP look on me as a dirty blood, my doctors have a different thought. The DUP call me as promiscuous, but partners would tell them otherwiseThe DUP say I'm not child safe, despite niece and nephew's smiles. The DUP think I'm anti-Christian, yet I have a faith just like they themselves espouse. Yet even my church can't judge me on faith alone because of being gay I suppose. I've been called "one of them" by the new health minister to my face, Yet when we meet ...

George Watson remembered

I suggested in yesterday's post on George Watson that his death may have gone unnoticed, but it seems that was not the case. There were obituaries in Times Higher Education, on the St John's College, Cambridge, website and (though it is no longer easily available) The Times. And the journalist and former England cricketer Ed Smith devoted an article to him in the New Statesman. This showed him as an academic as well as a politician: During the upheavals within English studies in the 1970s and 1980s, he was among the first and most strident opponents of deconstruction. He also ...

I was chuffed at the fall in number of residents claiming Jobseekers Allowance and benefits announced this week. Since 2010 over 2 million net additional new jobs have been created. What is particualrly gratifying is that vast majority are full time. In Dulwich and West Norwood figures show a dramatic reduction in the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in our area. Down 984 in the last months to 2,344 or 3.7% of working aged people. The number for 18-24 year olds has fallen 185 in the last 12 months to 385. People unemployed for more than 12 months has ...

According to Benjamin Franklin's over-used phrase, those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty or safety. However compelling this pithy quote is, it masks the fact that you can increase both liberty and safety at the same time. This isn't an easy task. I don't think that anyone doubts the extraordinary pressure that Nick Clegg and other Lib Dems in government have come under when they deal with the Tories. But I certainly think that we have managed to do both. Thanks to the Lib Dems, this is the first government for ...

Stark Housing Choices

London is anticipated to grow from 8.5 million residents mid 2013 to 10.1 million residents within 22 years. That is a huge increase. It comes from the rise in births, fewer deaths and migration. We can not house 10.1 million people in London without either making new builds in London significantly taller or expanding London's footprint. In Southwark the Labour council is choosing to allow much taller buildings and many more of them. It is even proposing to remove the protection of suburban areas and allow skyscrapers to be considered in such places. House prices are already ridiculously high. 2013 ...

In the end it came down to two seats, or a majority of four for Labour. In fact, just an hour into the programme, with only a few seats declared, a huge caption came right across the screen saying "LIKELY MAJ LAB 40". Such a prediction was completely out of whack with the swings being announced at the time. But no comment was made and the programme sailed ...

[IMG: 2013-08-dave-mancpride] The General Election next year may not be a happy occasion for the Liberal Democrats. If we find ourselves bruised and battered, depressed, demoralised, it will be hard to hold our heads up high and proclaim a strong liberal message. One thing that will keep us going is some old-fashioned, fun and inspiring community politics. There are three key things Firstly, it recognises that a lot of people are still locked up without proper public scrutiny. Secondly, it adds to guidance and reinforces guidance to stop this happening.

The idea of recall caught Welsh media attention on Monday, when Kirsty Williams, Welsh Lib Dem leader, made the case for this form of direct democracy to apply to Assembly Members if 20% of local voters signed a petition. Direct democratic methods such as recall, referendums and petitions are increasingly popular, especially among those who least trust politicians. For many of these citizens, taking control into their own hands is preferable to either creating more politicians (mayors; assemblies) or giving the existing crop more powers. So as Westminster continues to debate a (limited) form of recall, it makes sense for ...
