[IMG: Kelly-Marie and friend] Kelly-Marie Blundell is nothing if not courageous and tenacious. For those of you who don't know her, she's our candidate in Guildford, a member of the party's Federal Policy Committee and prominent member of the Social Liberal Forum. She's been behind many of the excellent motions on welfare reform and food banks which have been passed at Liberal Democrat conference in the last few years. She's leading a lively campaign in Guildford, a seat held between 2001 and 2005 for the party by Sue Doughty. Just the other day, I saw that she was committed to ...

Bizarre headline of the day Clown seen running off with Liberal Democrat poster from the Telegraph: In a Stroud Life article, Adrian Walker-Smith, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for the Stroud constituency, said: "Our supporter was hanging out her washing in the garden when she heard a crack and saw a young man wearing clown trousers dashing along the street with the board. There may only be five Scottish Liberal Democrat MSPs,sadly, but by heavens they have delivered incredible things. As Justice Spokesperson for the last four years, Alison McInnes has stopped the SNP Government in its tracks several times. She couldn't stop them centralising the Police, but she could make a fuss when statistics showed that officers were stopping and searching children. She made a fuss when the SNP started using armed patrols on routine duties in peaceful Highland communities. She defended our rights when the SNP tried to remove the requirement for corroboration in our legal system. She explained why this ...

Richard Morris argues that the Liberal Democrats are being too agreeable when it comes to the prospect of a coalition after the general election. "Davis had a number of examples of elitism to choose: his gap year, his time at Oxbridge, or his public school education. The choice to fixate upon Clegg's multicultural upbringing, suggesting it to be out of touch with "British" people, made for uncomfortable viewing." Kavya Kaushik is hard on Evan Davis - and quite right too. City of Sound notices planning notices. William Turvill on the dying art of newspaper subediting. "Here she stands, the sweetest ...

The reason I'm a Liberal Democrat, is because I believe Liberal Democrats are a voice for the voiceless - and I know it because I've been there. When I was young, successive Conservative governments vilified single parent families to the point that mothers including my own were given enough money to feed their children but not themselves. When I was growing up and realising that I wasn't like other boys, Labour legalised Civil Partnership but still didn't believe that I should be able to marry - actually, properly, marry - the person I love... Paddy is a legend. "My old friend" he called John Major and then proceeded to outline in robust and pithy language how David Cameron would be beholden to 60 "b*****ds should the Tories gain a majority in the election. He said Major only had 16, but Cameron would have 60 troublesome right wingers to deal with and outlined the chaos that could then ensue. The Huffington Post has transcribed all the offending excerpts. If you watch no other Paddy interview this election, watch this one. It'll make you laugh. In 2012 I blogged about "Grant Shapps' problems with the internet". Judging by this afternoon's Guardian story, those problems continue: Wikipedia has blocked a user account on suspicions that it is being used by the Conservative party chairman, Grant Shapps, "or someone acting on his behalf" to edit his own page along with the entries of Tory rivals and political opponents. The online encyclopedia, where pages are edited and created by readers, has tracked the changes made by a user called "Contribsx" who has systematically removed embarrassing references on Shapps' Wikipedia page about the Tory chairman's business activities as Michael ...

A Question on Work Capability Assessments has reached me, courtesy of the union Unite. They asked if I would support their campaign to abolish Work Capability Assessments, and this is how I replied to them: That the problem with the welfare system in this country is that it is trying to do two things simultaneously, and doing both of them badly as a result. By trying to both administer a system of benefits and encourage people into work, and has fallen into the trap of using the job seeking process as a stick to enforce compliance with the rules of ...

The Telegraph reports on a Grazia magazine feature about "husbands of politicians." It's interesting because it captures some of the preconceived ideas we have about gender roles and stereotypes. And also because it features two people well known to us, Duncan Hames and Andrew Poole, Jenny Willott's husband. It encapsulates the sacrifices that both Members of Parliament and their families have to make. Duncan said that people are more likely to talk to Jo about their baby son: After Andrew was born, the only thing anyone in Jo's constituency wanted to talk to her about was the baby - and ...

It is fair to say that all of the Welsh Parties have struggled with the implications of devolution when it came to writing their manifestos. The careful wording of pledges so as to distinguish between English and Welsh responsibilities is an art form that tests even the most switched on devolutionist when it comes to the details of each policy. There are though very clear political issues where we should expect the UK and Welsh manifestos of each party to be consistent. One of these issues is the powers&nbsthat may be devolved to the Welsh Assembly after the election. After ...

It's been a bad campaign for the Tories so far. They've managed to turn Ed Miliband's public image from a geeky ditherer into a decisive, effective politician who's a hit with the ladies, as a notable for instance. Their latest trick involves attacking the SNP full on. There are only two things I can take away from this: that the Conservatives and those who support them in the media have decided that Miliband and the Labour Party are somehow indestructible; and that there is a deep hypocrisy right at the heart of all this SNP-bashing by the Tories that a ...

The burst of excitement about politics in Scotland is really unprecedented. It requires a little explanation, and why people who have been turned off from politics appear to be turning - to some extent at least - to nationalists. Nationalists, with all their intolerance too, which is all too obvious as they shout down opposing candidates in the streets. Why? It seems to me that there are two reasons. First, the idea of imagining your own nation has an empowering effect, whether it is practical or not. It allows people to imagine solutions to intractable problems which appear to have ...

Of the benefits a future chancellor might cut, there was most support for reducing child benefit, then working-age benefits and finally pensioner benefits such as the winter fuel allowance. If the council's responsible we can get it sorted fairly easily. If it's private then it's a different matter.
