Following up on my list of the most anthologised sf short stories of 1940, here are links to those I found readliy available for free online after a cursory search (ie in the first page of Google results for title and author). I am happy to expand this list to include other short sf from 1940, as well as any I may have missed from my first list, and also to remove any links which violate copyright. NB also that UNZ.org has the entire 1940 runs of Unknown, Thrilling Wonder Stories and Argosy in PDF - possibly others as well, ...

I am not a great one for Halloween, but this is as good a night as any to blog this. Back in 2007 I wrote: What is the most frightening television programme you have ever seen? For me it is probably the episode of Sexton Blake in which the hypodermic-wielding villain measured Tinker for his coffin while he was still alive. Mind you, I may have been as young as seven when I saw it. After that. it is undoubtedly a play I remember from the early 1970s. Two wealthy couples were spending Christmas in a country cottage - the ...

My annoyance could not be hidden in my closing remarks to the public inquiry. The planning inspector was getting a bit annoyed with me too. I had really had enough by then. The developer, Tesni, has been heavy handed in pursuing this development from day one. Their public consultation was minimal, limited to a letter [...]

It's Hallowe'en. It's dark. The streets are starting to fill with witches, goblins, ghouls, zombies and all sorts of scary creatures. It's time for the 2015 Liberal Democrat Voice Pumpkin Parade. What have talented Liberal Democrats round the country been carving? Have a reminder of what they produced two years ago. Don't for a minute think that we invented that hashtag, by the way. It came from Lib Dem organiser Alice Megan and it's for that reason that she's kicking off our festivities: If there isn't a Party.Political.Pumpkin competition, there should be... Norman Lamb tells the Eastern Daily Press that he threatened to resign during his 3 year term as health and social care minister. The issue was waiting time targets for mental health conditions – and he got his way. You always had the feeling that Norman knew exactly what he was doing on mental health but never quite knew why. Then in March, the Sunday Mirror revealed that Norman's son Archie suffers with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This is absolutely not about having all the tins facing the same way or the bed linen straight. It's a daily nightmare for those ...

[IMG: ALDC Master Logo (for screen)] Six principal council by-elections were contested on Thursday, with one gain and one loss for the Liberal Democrats. The party made an impressive gain from the Conservatives on Wealden district council last night. David White polled 69.9% of the vote to clinch victory with a 653 majority. The party also recorded a 32.7% swing from the Tories. David becomes the sole Lib Dem representative on the Conservative dominated council, having lost his seat this May. In Brentwood (BC), there was less good news for the Liberal Democrats as the Conservatives made a gain in ...

With the Electoral Commission's decision that the European referendum question should offer the options leave / remain, the pro-European campaign will end up being known as the 'remain' campaign rather than the 'yes' or 'in' campaign. Which means if, like me, you've forgotten what the pro-European campaign is called, want to find their website and search for 'remain campaign website' or similar you may (at the time of writing at least) struggle to find it in the search results. So as a little public service, here is the pro-European 'remain' campaign's website for the forthcoming referendum: www.StrongerIn.co.uk.

Tim Farron has shown great self discipline. In an article for the Mirror about this week's tax credits showdown in the Lords, he turns his fire, rightly, on the Tories. He only slips in one sly dig at Labour: Sadly Labour wouldn't support our move to scrap the cuts altogether, but we joined with them to force a delay. It isn't ideal, but it is a chance to tell the government it should improve its plans. If Labour wouldn't support the move when they are led by a proper leftie, you wonder if they ever would. Tim looks at why ...

[IMG: Britain Votes 2015 - book cover showing one of the TV leaders debates] The Hansard Society's Britain Votes is one of now several series of books which come out after a British election. The days when the only regular book was a new Nuffield series volume with David Butler as one of the authors are long gone (though his books are still well worth a read). Being one of the first to appear for the 2015 general election, Britain Votes 2015, edited by Andrew Geddes and Jonathan Tonge and with a large high-powered cast of chapter (co)authors, relies on ...

It is a shame anything involving Germaine Greer and her vile comments about transgender people seems to have helped bring some sanity back to the world of political commentary. As we have seen there has been a new puritan spirit rising across the nation as politicians try to ban/filter porn, suppress sex workers freedoms and ban some magazines. And it isn't just in those sort of initiatives one can see it... there's a creeping sense of conformity drifting back across various aspects of our lives. Just look at the adulation given to same-sex married couples and their kids on the ...

[IMG: GCHQ Bude by Paul Walter] It looks like the Tories' Snoopers' Charter to be unveiled this week will be the blinged-up version, with even more sweeping powers than they tried to introduce before. Tim Farron told the Independent that the Liberal Democrats would oppose it just like we did in Government: Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat leader, signalled that he would be prepared to muster his 112-strong bloc of peers to oppose measures which undermined individual liberty. "We would use all parliamentary tools available to us to ensure any proposed legislation is properly scrutinised," he told The Independent. "Liberal ...

The Republican Party is in real turmoil at the moment. Although there is still time and hope within the ranks of their more sensible players that it will all come good in the end, at the moment they have two frontrunners in the presidential nominee race in Trump and Carson who are completely unelectable. However, as soon as I've said that I can hear the pundits at Brietbart shouting, "That's a contradiction in terms. If Trump and Carson are way ahead within the race that in and of itself means they are by definition electable. It's only you and your ...

Fresh from forcing a rethink on tax credits the Liberal Democrats peers in the House of Lords are preparing to take a stand on another piece of legislation, and a stand that chimes very much with liberal principles. The Guardian reports that a fresh showdown is being prepared with the Government over plans to allow police to examine people's online browsing histories. Peers are also concerned that the Government has rejected calls for judges, rather than ministers, to issue eavesdropping warrants. The paper says that critics from across the political divide believe that the Bill, which will update 15-year-old legislation, ...

I have previously mentioned that I am taking part in the informal committee to progress the excellent Discovery Walk proposal. The Discovery Walk will comprise of plaques set into the paved area of the Green Space at the heart of the city's huge new waterfront development - to celebrate the contributions of Dundee people who have contributed to science and society in a highly visible and permanent way. Bronze plaques in the pavement will tell the fascinating stories behind these individuals and their discoveries and inventions. The committee met yesterday to review progress and finalise the plaques. The plaques look ...

As previously reported, the council election in Kinson, Bournemouth was marred by a basic error in May: the wrong ballot papers were sent out to polling stations. The courts have now ruled that an election has to be run again: Kinson North ballot papers were sent to Kinson South polling stations and vice versa for the May 7 local elections. The mix-up was discovered shortly after 7am, but a number of voters were unable to cast their votes until the right ballot papers had been delivered... Labour's Beryl Baxter finished fourth, 64 votes shy of third-placed Conservative candidate Norman Decent, ...

The meeting started earlier this month at 7pm because the first hour was all about setting the scene for the Neighbourhood Plan, a subject I have commented upon regularly or too often depending on your point of view! [IMG: Lydiate] Suffice to say it was a constructive hour that involved 3 Lydiate residents as well. One of residents, as a local socialist environmental campaigner, is possibly even more suspicious of the Labour Party than I am, whilst another is, or at least was, a local Conservative Parish councillor until recent times. And yes I did participate constructively myself despite being ...

Sacro showcase event

Yesterday, I was pleased to attend the Sacro showcase event at the Dundee Voluntary Action offices in Constitution Road. Sacro is a national community justice voluntary organisation working across Scotland to make communities safer by reducing conflict and offending. It was very interesting to hear about the good work Sacro is undertaking in Dundee and across Tayside, particularly its youth restorative justice service. You can find out more about the work of Sacro here.

No change in this week's top 3, with Paul Revell's Sock Monsters (590 points) continuing to lead the LibDemVoice Fantasy Football League after Week 10, just ahead of Christopher Buck's Moves Like Agger (570) and Edward Douglas's Use Your Ed (568).
