Tim Farron gave a major speech on economics at the Institute for Public Policy Research in London on Thursday. He set out three principles which he said will govern Liberal Democrat economic policy for the next five years: Invest now in infrastructure Back enterprise Take the long viewHis take on the second principle is particularly good: The fact is that the Tories aren't really pro-free market capitalism at all. They are pro-corporate capitalism. They are there to fight not for entrepreneurs, not for innovators who oil the wheels of the market, but for the status quo. Don't believe me? Look, ...

The Sword In The Stone won a convincing victory in the Best Novel category for last year's 1939 Retro Hugos. The Ill-Made Knight, which is the third part of The Once And Future King, will have it tougher this year - despite being in large part the basis for the musical Camelot, I think it's less well-known than the first part, and faces strong rivals with traditional fan appeal in Slan and Gray Lensman. It will, however, get one of my nominations and probably my vote. Years before The Mists of Avalon, White grappled with the Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot triangle and came ...

Shropshire Council's leadership has launched "The Big Conversation", a five-year long consultation on the future of council services. This is an important survey and it is important that people take part in it. But I have my doubts about how much difference it will make to what the council leadership does. I hope to be [...]

Marry Berry is unmasked There was outrage at the identity of the finalists of the Great British Bake Off and, though it was an ugly affair, I am pleased that Mary Berry was finally unmasked as the left-wing troublemaker she has always been. For, I can exclusively reveal, 'Red Mary' has been behind every politically motivated strike, every violent demonstration and every act of industrial sabotage in Britain for decades. And who do people imagine baked the macaroons for the Angry Brigade? Lord Bonkers was Liberal MP for Rutland South-West 1906-10. Previously in Lord Bonkers' Diary We are not downheartedHow ...

Recently stories keep appearing about whether we should stay in the European Union or leave. In the referendum, which is likely to take place next year, the Liberal Democrats are clear that the UK should not only stay in but that Europe should be reformed. One in every ten British jobs, many in London and plenty in Ealing rely on our membership of the European Union's single market. The EU buys over half of the UK exports. Lots of American and Asian firms build factories in our country because it is in the single market. The EU is our biggest ...

Whilst Ros was campaigning for the Vice-Presidency, I had work to do too. After all, I'm not the best 'minder' in the world, having been fired during her Party Presidential campaign for a tendency to stop and chat to people, rather than making sure that she got to where she needed to be. And besides, I have my own role, that of Council member and occasional diplomat, seeking compromise where possible and offering organisational enlightenment when process is discussed. At Party Council, in the discussion about changing the internal procedures so as to withdraw voting rights over the European Parliamentary ...

In the wake of the House of Lords voting to give 16 and 17 year olds the vote in the EU Referendum, Alison Suttie wrote about the debate for the Huffington Post. It's fair to say she was unimpressed with the Tories' arguments against the measure: Some of the arguments we heard from Tory peers against extending the franchise for the EU referendum last night were truly absurd and were the sort of patronising arguments and attitudes that would not have sounded out of place in the House of Lords a hundred years ago in debates about giving women the ...

[IMG: TheWestWing] Labour Uncut is always a good place to go to for outlandish claims that bear no relationship to reality, and the opening of this piece is no exception: Probably the greatest hour in modern television history is the magisterial finale of the second season of The West Wing: Two Cathedrals. I'm not convinced it's even the best episode of The West Wing, and the idea of it being the greatest piece of modern television feels somewhat akin to stating that Liz Kendall would be a popular choice for leader amongst Labour party members. I can think of a ...

Mysterious poem

A relative found this poem written inside the back cover of her copy of George Bernard Shaw's The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God (and Some Lesser Tales), and wondered if anyone can identify its origin? There is no other inscription on or in the book. Strangers all...... But to me Must fall Odd romances Of words and passions and strange Confessions...... "Tis not all" The Devil Laughs "But more?" I pray not...... To lose all ALWAYS Till end of Tyme?

Writing for PoliticsHome, former Liberal Democrat Health Minister Norman Lamb argued that the Government must put its money where its mouth is when it comes to ensuring equality for mental health: The Spending Review is a critical moment that will shape the Government's spending for the duration of the Parliament, and the Chancellor of the Exchequer has an opportunity to make a bold statement on the importance of tackling mental illness. I will not be humoured by the warm words for mental health and my efforts as a minister - it's about time that this Government put their money where ...

Great to see the opposition Lib Dem Group on Sefton Council standing up for Merseyside and effectively saying take this 3rd rate devolution deal and stick it where the sun don't.........! [IMG: Sefton Logo] I have commented on the poor deal previously as I see nothing in it for the Boroughs surrounding Liverpool. We get a Metro Mayor imposed on us, whom we will have to pay the wages of, for little or nothing in return that will be of any use to us. Sadly Sefton Council Tories backed Labour in endorsing the deal, but of course Labour and Tories ...

I have written before about the first single I ever bought: Kites by Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. It seems my preference for melotrons and psychedelia was present from the start. There is a good entry on the band on All Music: "Simon Dupree" was vocalist Derek Shulman, one of a trio of brothers (Ray and Phil being the other two) from Portsmouth, England, who started out in music as R&B fanatics and first formed a group in 1964. Their musical interests can be glimpsed by the choices that the Shulman brothers made between 1964 and 1965 in naming ...

It's now almost eight months since the face of British politics was decisively altered. Yet the full impact of the UK's 2015 general election has still to be understood by politicians, let alone the voting public. You might think this is hyperbole. A lot of people said the same thing after the 2010 election, for instance, [...]

In the wake of the Paris attacks, the Met have issued strong warnings to the Chancellor around police cuts. Some of the planned cuts to the police have been spelled out by Lord Blair, the former Met commissioner in some pretty stark words: "This is the most perilous terrorist threat in our history. The British police, with their long successful track record in counter-terrorism, have adapted well to the changing circumstances and, at the last moment, the very best defences they have built, the neighbourhood teams and the fast and accurate response to multi-site concurrent attacks, are being downgraded. The former chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Sir Hugh Orde has made a vital point today when he warns that the UK will find it harder to keep terrorists out of the country and to deport them after arrest if it leaves the European Union. According to the Observer, Sir Hugh has argued that the country will be at greater risk if it "pulls up the drawbridge" and steps aside from EU intelligence sharing. He says that intelligence plays an increasingly crucial role in fighting international crime and thwarting terrorist plots: Quitting the EU, he says, ...

[IMG: Airplane flying across a clear blue sky] Whenever I carbon offset airplane flights, I'm pleasantly surprised at how relatively small the cost of carbon offsetting is. The percentage it adds to the cost of a flight is large enough to make many politicians scared of introducing a tax at that level, yet small enough to think that it is not some unimaginable chasm to cross to deal with the carbon problem when the costs come out at that sort of level. And then of course I also remember the controversies over how effective carbon offsetting really is. A recent ...

Last Friday's sickening Paris attacks shocked us all. They weren't just attacks on France, but attacks on our shared values and way of life. Seeing such horrific tragedy being inflicted on a city that so many of us associate with joy, love and freedom has been deeply upsetting. At the same time, it has been profoundly moving to see the courage and resilience of the French people and the solidarity shown with them from around the world, including in the UK. When emotions run high, it is important that our responses are made with great care and with a cool ...

Growing yet staying familiar is a liberal activity. This is an important aspect I think of being a liberal, and perhaps what underlines its activism in society. It is a ready-made action on the part of those liberals to whom non-conformity and freedom matters to them the most regarding liberal values.

Meeting at the Staiths

We have a modest number of new members in Dunston and Teams and Lobley Hill and Bensham wards so we decided to have a meeting with them on Thursday evening. Venue for the gathering was the Staiths Cafe, opposite the Dunston Staiths. We were up against the live (and loud) music but we huddled ourselves in a corner upstairs and talked about campaigning in the two wards. Alas, I was given the job
