Since the Plain English Campaign was launched in 1979, 324 local councils have been awarded the Crystal Mark seal of approval for clearly written documents. Shropshire Council is not among them.[1] Libraries are all about communication. We love them. But we are for fearful for their future. A review of the six hub libraries -... In acknowledgment of the leap day, I'm shifting my weekly book update from Friday to Saturday for the rest of this year. Not brilliant planning, in that I'm now intending two regular Saturday posts for the next few months (this one and the Double Deckers); but we live in an imperfect world. Current Watership Down, by Richard Adams (a chapter a week) Short Trips: Steel Skies, ed. John Binns Wings of Sorrow and of Bone, by Beth Cato Last books finished The Magic Cup by Andrew M. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-35730273 The BBC has the story on its web site – see link above A sobering story because of what was there before it but a grand tribute to the many who died in the 9 11 atrocity.

Today it was the turn of Pelaw and Heworth ward to host an action day. The aim was to get the next Focus delivered across most of the ward. In the end, we managed to cover the whole ward, though a couple of patches were taken by a member to be delivered through the week. I was given a patch to do near Heworth Grange Comprehensive with a warning there are usually lots of big people-eating dogs.
Thank you to Gatley Village Partnership for organising a "Clean for the Queen" litter pick this afternoon, and thank you to local residents and the Mormon Church who turned out in force and collected around 40 bags of litter from around the village. Keith, Graham and Iain were out helping, collecting about 10 bags between us. It's amazing what we can achieve when we come together as a community for just a couple of hours. Regular litter picks in both Cheadle and Gatley make a real difference to our villages so thank you again to everyone involved in them. [IMG: ...
The article below first appeared in Libdem Voice, 5th March 2016, in a slightly shorter format. It seems that there is widespread misunderstanding among the federal party members as to why we here in Scotland decided to end the current moratorium we had on fracking and other non-conventional extraction of hydrocarbons. Introduced in 2013, the Scottish moratorium on fracking was, as far as one understands it, based upon awaiting further evidence. The following year, such evidence actually came to light in the form of the Scottish Government's 2014 report: Independent Expert Scientific Panel - Unconventional Oil and Gas. http://www.gov.scot/Resource/0045/00456579.pdf The ...
[IMG: ALDC Master Logo (for screen)] Four principal council by-elections took place this week. In Rutland (UA), there was a comfortable Liberal Democrat hold in Whissendine. In the ward's second by-election in 18 months, Kevin Thomas won the seat with 65.1% of the vote and a majority of 156 ahead of the Conservatives. Liberal Democrat candidates also came agonisingly close to making gains from the Conservatives in Havant (BC) and East Dorset (DC). In the former contest, Lib Dem Catherine Billam fell just 20 votes short of the Tories in Bondfields, polling 27.3% with a 16% vote share increase from ...

Well this is a odd one but I am told, by a seemingly reliable source, that the Leader of a Parish Council here on Merseyside went to a resident's meeting recently and introduced an accompanying person as their 'Personal Assistant'. I have never heard of such a position within a parish council before and it is worrying indeed if the precept payers of the parish concerned are being expected to fork out to fund the post. I wonder if the particular parish council is willing to out themselves and offer an explanation?
Germany's finance minister says the UK would be shut out of the single market in the event of Brexit. Investment warning from the experts The world's biggest fund management company, BlackRock, says Brexit offers "a lot of risk and little reward" and has explained how it could damage the financial services industry in Britain: Under one of the potential scenarios analysed by the fund, Britain could be excluded from the "passport" framework , which would deal a significant blow to those looking to sell or advise on investment funds within the EU. Should such a scenario come into place, investors ...
Embed from Getty Images We have seen Stewart Lee talking to Will Self and Alexei Sayle. Here he is being interviewed by The Quietus: Have you noticed a similar change happening in comedy? SL: I have. If you went to the alternative night with all the weird acts, which 25 years ago was downstairs at the Market Tavern on Islington Green on Essex Road, you'd see Simon Munnery who is the son of a plumber. Or Johnny Vegas, who is not a member of the upper classes. The same thing now, which is the Alternative Comedy Memorial Society at the ...
Last Friday, Scottish Liberal Democrat Conference passed this amendment to a motion on climate change. After line 21 insert: "The report of the Independent Expert Scientific Panel on Unconventional Oil and Gas published in July 2014 which states that "The technology exists to allow the safe extraction of such reserves, subject to robust regulation being in place" and "There could be minimal impact from unconventional hydrocarbons if they are used as a petrochemical feedstock." South Gloucestershire residents who want to use the Sort It recycling centres now need to register their vehicle to access the sites. You don't need to sign up straight away, just make sure you register at least 24 hours before your next visit. You can sign up at any time of year and you only need to do it once, unless you change your address or vehicle. There are two types of registration: Standard vehicle registration for vehicles of any size (up to 3.5 tonnes) that have rear and/or side facing windows including cars of any size, campervans, people carriers ...
I was not able to attend yesterday's rally to raise the profile of housing in the Welsh Assembly campaign but, along with other party spokespersons I did send a video message. As the Western Mail reports hundreds of people marched from the Senedd to the Hayes in Cardiff City centre to demand more is done to tackle Wales' housing crisis by whoever forms an administration after May's election. They have the support of a host of high-profile supporters including Hollywood star Michael Sheen, entertainer Max Boyce and comedian Rhod Gilbert. Organisers have pointed to a 16% rise in house prices ...
Embed from Getty Images During coalition we blocked the Snoopers Charter. The bill, resurrected under the name of the Investigatory Powers Bill, shows the intent of the Tory Government – to degrade all forms of privacy we once held dear. This new Bill isn't much different than the old one. It gives the police the power to indiscriminately record internet connection data, tap phone calls and scariest of all – give the security services the power to hack all electronic devices we own. The Bill has been marketed to MPs and the wider public as a necessity to public safety, ...
Residents have contacted me about damaged fencing on Riverside Approach - see right. This is the boundary fencing to land owned by Network Rail and I have contacted Network Rail seeking repairs. I also, on behalf of residents, contacted the City Council's Roads Maintenance Partnership about the poor road condition and have received the following response : "You may already have noticed in passing that these potholes on Riverside Approach were repaired shortly after your email. The Road Maintenance Partnership inspector has also noted one or two more within the last couple of days and an order will be raised ...
