I don't know when it happened but at some point over the last few years the 'anxiety' part of my 'depression and anxiety' diagnosis became the more prominent issue I was dealing with. Today, I feel like I've won a battle against it. The war isn't over but always celebrate the small wins. Today I [...]

Four of its parties have really got to grips with strategic thinking, looking for ideas to help us through the current mire in which we find ourselves, a mire not of our making. Today we had our equivalent of the State Opening of Parliament. It only happens once every five years and I was lucky enough to have ...
These photographs of Spondon were taken by my father in 1962. Most of the village centre remains recognisable today, albeit that the businesses have mostly changed. The first photograph is a view of the village centre looking towards Chapel Street. The edge of the White Swan pub is just visible on the right hand side. The halt markings have long ... I photographed this wooden sculpture in front of All Saints, Northampton, this afternoon. It is one of half a dozen that stood in various locations around the town last year. This one commemorates the Battle of Northampton, one of the major battles of the Wars of the Roses, which took place in 1460. The battlefield, which lies close to various development sites in the south of the town, seems constantly threatened these days.
This is just to follow up my earlier post to talk about why we marched today. These are my personal views. Since the referendum, there has been an increase in racial abuse directed at people in this country. One of the things I was marching for was to stay loud and clear that immigrants are welcome in this country. Secondly, I was marching for the 48% of people who voted "remain", to say that we stand with you, we believe the UK's future lies in positive co-operation with our European partners. I was marching to say clearly that we believe ...
[IMG: P1010579] Wow! That was quite a day! I got up at 6am and decided, on the spur of the moment, to go up to London to join the Liberal Democrat contingent at the March for Europe. After being fortified by a breakfast from a well known food outlet in Praed Street W1, I hot-footed it to the assembly point at the Cumberland Hotel. I was the first Liberal Democrat there. Nah-nah-na-na-nah! Actually I was so early I did a recce and walked on. Or I would have walked on, if I had not overheard a comment from one of ...
Tim Farron led a noisy Liberal Democrat contingent at the March for Europe in London today. From Facebook: Unfortunately the BBC couldn't fit him on their list of speakers at the event, but speak he did. He was clear that the UK needed to stay in the EU for our children's futures. .@timfarron speaking passionately in Parliament Square to the #marchforeurope – UK in EU for our children's future. pic.twitter.com/UwQ7s1S0BS — Lindsay Northover (@LPNorthover) July 2, 2016 Interesting choice of sign behind his head: Lib Dem MP Tim Farron at #marchforeurope (I'm more impressed by the sign behind his head) ...
Despite the attractions of the Wales v Belgium Euro '16 match I chose to accept an invitation to a concert. The Amadeus Chamber Choir was performing at St Joseph's Church in Blundellsands. This was a real treat for me and all held in a good cause-children orphaned because of Ebola in Sierra Leone. click hear to hear a sample of their music I was seated at the front of the church when, from the back of the church, the music began with Handel's Zadok the Priest. There was a moment when I wondered whether this was a recording from The ...

Yes, it's only micrograms of difference, but it's still really weird: until 2018, the kilogram is defined as "the weight of this physical object". So what happens when that object changes?

UKIP have had so many leadership crises and scandals that they make Labour and the Conservatives look like beginners. Why then, should the latest in-fighting be any different? As the party which has the most to gain from last week's vote one would think that UKIP would be making plans to exploit it for all its worth. I anticipate that they will get a boost in the polls and if there were an early General Election may even add to their single MP. But that is not how UKIP operate. Instead, as the Independent reports they are preparing to expel ...
Remembering Cllr Ed Townsend: How you can help keep the Liberal Democrat flame alive in Newport
[IMG: Cllr Ed Townsend] When we lost Dad the day before the Assembly elections, we were struck by the kindness shown by the Liberal Democrats. The messages of support and the respect Dad was held in meant a great deal to us. We loved Dad as children and had a huge admiration of him as Lib Dem members as well. Ed - as he was known by everyone else - had been a long-standing member, first of the Liberals and then the Liberal Democrats. He joined after Margaret Thatcher won her second term, saying then that he felt he had ...
The three events that completely changed British political history over the past decades
No, one of them is not the EU referendum result. That would be too obvious. Instead I have taken a trio of happenings that I think changed the course of British political history over the last ten years in unthinkable ways that could easily have gone the other way. Gordon Brown not calling the 2007 election Michael Gove and other contenders for the Tory leadership should take note: not calling a general election when you are probably going to win can come back to haunt you. Now, we will never know if Brown and Labour would indeed have won the ...
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-36461853 This is an interesting article on the BBC web site – see link above [IMG: 26496061060_5cf97ec002_o] Talking of cricket in Germany there is a fascinating book that is well worth reading on this subject called Field of Shadows by Don Waddell (published 2014). It is all about a cricket tour of Nazi Germany in 1937 by a the Gentleman of Worcestershire. And the reason for this posting? It's the cricket season in England for goodness sake and we have been hijacked by football!
Big data analysis promises huge opportunities, but raises huge issues. How do we ensure we are masters of the data revolution and avoid being enslaved by it? Big data is a term we hear being bandied about more and more. Indeed, data is growing exponentially. A whopping 90% of the data that currently exists was created in just the last two years. In 2014 there were 204 million emails every minute. This volume, variety and velocity of data is unprecedented, its territory uncharted - and its potential mostly untapped. That potential has been described by the Department for Business, Innovation ...

The Liverpool Echo has the story – see link above The Metro Mayor farce enters a new phase of madness and we don't even get one imposed on us until next year. So local and national government is really short of a few bob so let's just spend/allocate £7m, yes £7m, of public money to set up an office for our unwanted Metro Mayor! You could not make it up!!!!!! Have Merseyside Labour Council leaders lost all perspective on the real world?

Shropshire councillors are to unite in condemning hate crime at the next council meeting on 21 July. The four political leaders have drawn up a joint motion that will be debated at the meeting. It has been extensively discussed by councillors and I am confident it will get unanimous approval. The motion is timely. Ludlow...
