Beware of faragespawn Next spring, be sure to search your ponds and watercourses for faragespawn and rid them of it. Left undisturbed, it will metamorphose into full-grown farages. These froglike creatures hop about making a thorough nuisance of themselves in pubs and can frequently be heard expressing rude and reactionary opinions. Why, only the other day one turned up in the European Parliament! It was last seen being chased down the street by a posse of angry Belgians armed with butterfly nets. Lord Bonkers was Liberal MP for Rutland South West, 1906-10. Previously in Lord Bonkers' Diary I'll be damned ...

My e-mail to Arriva Trains Wales Customer Relations Team: Dear Arriva Trains Wales, If someone were to provide you with a venue, a plentiful supply of drinks, a spectacular buffet and a guest list, I would still doubt your ability to throw a successful party. What's more, you are clearly very constipated indeed; why else would you find it difficult to give a shit? Today marks one of the worst experiences I've ever encountered at the hands of your appalling train company. From the moment that the 0725 was running late, I knew it was going to be one of ...

Second paragraph of third chapter: If you'd asked me that at the time, I probably would have answered by staring at you. Blankly. Well, why shouldn't I have been there? That was the way we were, before the end. Me, and Cal, and Dorian, and all the others. No job, no routine, just starting my fourth year at an art college I'd actually been to only once. (My family had been middleclass for only a couple of decades, in case you were wondering, and none of them had ever even seen London. They didn't have a clue how higher education ...

The outline agenda for Federal Conference in Brighton this September has just been published here, with the full agenda to follow mid-August. Highlights include a slot reserved to debate Europe with an extended deadline for a motion and amendments so that we may consider something topical. Federal Conference committee was concerned that the motions proposed in July might have been overtaken by events by September. Other policy debates include Welfare, Transport, PreP, Racism (with reference to the rise in hate crimes as a result of the Leave campaign), the Green economy and Parent Governors; there are consultative sessions on Nuclear ...

Ghostbusters 1, It's not perfect. People who are more important to listen to on racism than me have some issues with Patty as a character; I can see those issues, and think that they could have been solved better (& could be solved in sequels). I do think, though, that Patty was not treated anywhere NEAR as badly as Winston was in the original. 2, I actually liked the gross-out jokes; in a film starring four guys those wouldn't even be commented on. 3, Holtzmann getting to do the slow-mo BadAss Action Hero shooty bit actually made me fill up. ...

One of the doorstep comments staying with me from the referendum campaign is: “I’m voting Out: we haven’t beaten the Germans in two world wars to give in now”. The psychoanalyst Vamik Volkan talks of “chosen traumas” and “chosen glories”, as stories from the past get retold and shape collective identity. The trouble is that how the events are remembered changes. The stories seem to be about the past, but also have a present-day purpose. At the celebrations of the bicentenary of the French Revolution, Margaret Thatcher pointed out that we had had a revolution a century earlier: she was ...

The Southport Links Rotary Club have for several year organised "service above Self Awards for Southport Primary Schools. I was fortunate to be invited to hand our the certificates and trophies to the winners. In truth this was one of those occasions when the cliché; 'they were all winners' is true. Members of the club had visited each of the participating schools and prepared a report. Without exception the information they discovered was impressive. There is so much that is positive going on in our schools. The winners were Our Lady of Lourdes RC Primary School from Birkdale who are ...

At the end of the primary season 8 years ago, relations between the Clinton and the winning Obama camps were not the warmest. Thankfully, both were grown-up enough to sort it out and move forward. Bridges were built quickly and Hillary ended up as Secretary of State in Obama's first term. In 2008, it was hard to imagine that Michelle Obama would give a speech warmly endorsing Hillary as her husband's successor, as she did last night. It was a very well crafted speech. It had lots of positives about Hillary – but also it put the boot into Trump ...

Earlier in the month was the regular meeting of Bury's 'Full Council'. This is the full meeting of all 51 councillors which meets five or six times a year. The meeting was a very busy agenda with important debates on Fracking, the EU Referendum and on Hate Crime. Fracking The Government last year released 'licenses' to private shale gas companies for potential exploration for future fracking sites. These licenses cover much of Bury. As a planning authority, Bury Council cannot 'pre-judge' any future planning applications for fracking, so it would be impossible for councillors to vote against any fracking in ...

Welcome aboard International Relations Committee flight 2016 to everywhere. My name is Mark, and I'll be taking care of you today. On the flight deck is Harriet Shone, our International Officer, and our Chair, Robert Woodthorpe Browne, welcomes you aboard today's flight. Alright, clichéd opening written, let's get serious. We've just recruited vast numbers of new, pro-European, members, and there's a governance review underway. What better time than now to refocus the work of the International Relations Committee? It would be fair to say that International Relations Committee has been a bit semi-detached from the mainstream Party in the past. ...

At the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, which began yesterday and runs until Thursday, Bernie Sanders was roundly booed by many of his own supporters as he urged them to get behind Hilary. "I'm proud to stand with her", he said. There have already been other notable scenes of Sanders supporters shouting their disapproval in the hall. Bernie could have ridden this discontent and refused to back Hilary; he could have even told his supporters not to bother voting in November, that the choice between Clinton and Trump was a false one. Instead, he has made a distinction and saw that ...

The Prestwich and Whitefield Guide reports that families with pupils at schools in the Bury local authority area are not to be fined for taking their children on term time holidays, if attendance is otherwise good. Bury Council has announced it is making the move after father Jon Platt won a landmark ruling against the Isle of Wight authority over term-time holidays earlier this year. A Bury Council spokesman said: "The High Court Case in May means that it is not legally sound at the moment to issue fines for short absences, where attendance is otherwise good". The case is ...
