Victoria Station served Nottingham from 1900 to 1967. Now the site is occupied by a shopping centre and its car parks, and few people appreciate how the city centre back then could accommodate a busy train station. Using maps, old newspapers, 3D modelling and animation, Visualising Victoria demonstrates how the station fitted into the streets of Nottingham's busy city centre. Visualising Victoria is an 11 minute video made by Scott Taylor, researched by Lee Wright, and featuring original music by Rosie Abbott.

There are no settlements in Scotland or Northern Ireland that did not lose a member of the community in the First World War. In England and Wales there are 52, known as Thankful Villages. And Teigh in Rutland is one of them. The photograph shows the low obelisk and sundial that was erected in 2014 to mark this fact. The plaque lists the names of the eleven men and two women from the village who served in the war and came home. They are commemorated inside the church too. At the edge of the village there is a plum tree ...

In the immediate aftermath of the EU Referendum, Nicola Sturgeon played an absolute blinder. She seemed like she was the only grown-up in power. She was calm, she was reasonable and she put up a massive big tent that allowed all parties to unite. Well, not the Tories, but who cares about them in Scotland, anyway? Given the chaos they have inflicted, as Brexit gets underway, I suspect that their good performance in the Holyrood elections will turn out to be a high water mark. Within days of the result, the Scottish Parliament debated and passed a motion which authorised ...

BBC News quotes a Lib Dem spokesman: "We have enormous respect for Lord Sainsbury, and we see his help in the referendum campaign as a huge endorsement of this party's campaigning strength and our unequivocally pro-European ideals,"You bet we have respect for him. Second sentence of third chapter: The observatory presented itself to their eyes as a self-contained little community, without neighbours, and perched on the extreme end of the land. There were three buildings: a small, stone—built dwelling house, a low workshop, and, about two hundred yards farther north, a square tower of granite masonry, seventy feet in height. This SF novel from 1920 is about a chap called Maskull who is rather mystically translated from a Scottish observatory to the planet Tormance, orbiting the double star that we know as Arcturus, where he meets various inhabitants for deep and meaningful conversations, and ...

[IMG: Cllr Allan Knox & Vllr Mary Robinson discussing market plans] Cllr Allan Knox and Clitheroe's Lib Dem team have welcomed a decision by Ribble Valley Borough Council to put a brake on the current market proposal and to launch a proper consultation before any plans are submitted. Allan had previously called for an extraordinary council meeting where he would have been demanding that a stop be put on the current process and that the council consult widely, deeply and in a meaningful manner with residents, market users and traders about what they wish to see on the market site, ...

But earlier this year, the cash-strapped Tory controlled City Council in Peterborough announced [...]

There is a set of questions which can be called "The stupid questions asked by a journalist, which shows that they haven't done the most cursory research on the topic they are writing about". This will be an occasional set of posts highlighting these questions, and the answers to them, in an attempt to solve this problem. Post number one: things the Meat Loaf won't do Because the title of one of Meat Loaf's biggest hits is "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that", many, many, MANY idiot journalists have asked him what the "that" is, ...

Shambolic dithering by Labour in Gateshead over their own call to declare independence from the North East could cost residents millions of pounds in lost government cash and extra bureaucracy. As part of my contribution to Planting Up Whickham, 2 years ago I cleared this corner of the car park behind Whickham Library of the feral ash trees and shrubs that had taken over and were partly blocking the neighbouring path. After 2 years, the vegetation had returned. Over the weekend, I returned to cut it back again. I spotted other areas around the edge of the car park that need doing.

At Liberal Democrat autumn conference party members will have the opportunity to debate a Federal Policy Committee policy paper and an accompanying motion laying out an overall vision for the social security system - the first such policy paper on the subject for over a decade. Sadly, however, the contents of the paper and motion are scandalous in their blatant disregard for the views of party members. As part of the process of writing the policy paper, the working group which wrote it ran a members survey which included a question about which model should be used as the basis ...

I thought every media outlet had to name drop it or face the wrath of George Osborne. Oh hang on he's bitten the dust hasn't he. BTW is it just me or is the Echo web site struggling? Considering Labour MPs chose Owen Smith as the best chance they have of unseating Jeremy Corbyn the Pontypridd MP's perfomance so far has been less than inspiring. Smith's anointment as the favoured 'pretender to the crown' makes one wonder whether the Parliamentary Labour Party were either punishing him for some hidden misdemeanor or just having a laugh at the electorate's expense. More likely is the possibility that many in the Parliamentary Labour Party had made the judgement that whoever they chose as challenger would not be able to beat Corbyn. Their reasoning may have been that it was better to ...

The Guardian put out an article yesterday highlighting the ongoing security problems Labour conference is still having. In doing so, it revealed just how great the rift between Unite and GMB has become. To summarise a messy situation as best as one can: under Corbyn's push, the NEC decided to stop using G4S, the company which had provided security to Labour conferences for the last two decades, due to their apparent ties to the Israeli governments. Then, this was left to fester until they put the conference security out to tender – and found only one company, Showsec, wanted the ...
