Pre-2010 this was a Labour / Lib Dem ward with the Lib Dems winning out in 2008, but then the Lib Dem slide started with Labour winning in May 2010. By 2014 the Lib Dems were third and in 2015 fourth. No longer.

Fantastic news from Sheffield tonight. The Liberal Democrats have gained a Council seat in Mosborough ward from Labour. Mosborough (Sheffield) result: LDEM: 45.6% (+31.8) LAB: 34.1% (-9.2) UKIP: 12.4% (-9.8) CON: 6.1% (-7.9) GRN: 1.8% (-1.3) — Britain Elects (@britainelects) September 8, 2016 Another huge increase in the vote and all the more remarkable as it's up from just 14% in May this year. An outstanding result to the campaign team, which includes our own Joe Otten, and new Councillor Gail Smith. And so another Friday gets off to a very good start for the Liberal Democrats. This is becoming ...

I recently received advice that BT plan to disconnect and remove a phone box in this ward. That came with an offer for a local charity or council to adopt a red phone box for £1. [IMG: red phone box] There's just one problem. The site was given as being outside 154 Durham Road, Blackhill, but as far as I know there is no phone box there, and I suspect the phone box is actually the one outside the Tesco Express further down the road, which is certainly not red. Once I get clarification I'll let you know the details, ...

The northern terminus of Peak Rail (at least for now) is Rowsley South, three and a half miles from Matlock. There is plenty of land there, with various other restoration projects going on. And I can recommend the bacon rolls.

Nick Clegg is everywhere in the media at the moment as he publicises his book which is published next week. Tonight he was on Channel 4 News talking about the challenge to reasonable, moderate politics posed by populists parties who use the politics of fear and blame. Watch the interview below: He linked this to the fact that Parliament may have to leave the Palace of Westminster while repairs are carried out to this. He reckons leaving the "rat-infested, asbestos ridden" place might help to drag our democracy into the 21st century. Nick also launched the second of his Brexit ...

The new issue of Liberator arrived this morning. As ever, I turn first to Radical Bulletin (the Liberal Democrats' Private Eye) for the latest gossip: There are three mysteries about Zahida Manzoor. Why did Nick Clegg waste a rare Lib Dem life peerage on her, why did Tim Farron eject Mike German from the role to make her the party's spokesperson for work and pensions and why has she now resigned from the Lib Dem benches? If you want to know the answer to those questions, as well as read of the recent adventures of Mark Gettleson and Darren Grimes, the ...

Two out of the five Scottish Liberal Democrat MSPs have made it on to the shortlist for the Scottish Politician of the Year Awards as the Herald reports. Liam McArthur is nominated for his "immersion into Orkney life." He is up against Labour's Jenny Marra and Jackie Baillie. The latter defied the party whip to vote for the renewal of Trident because Faslane employs so many people in her Dumbarton constituency. In news that will surprise nobody, Alex Cole-Hamilton finds himself up in the "one to watch" category. Since his election in May, you could probably wallpaper the entire Parliament ...

The Liverpool Echo has the story on its web site – see link above 'The [CQC] health watchdog ruled Melling Acres, a home for adults with learning difficulties and autism, was unsafe and ordered bosses to make urgent improvements.' 'The Care Quality Commission (CQC) gave the home a rating of "inadequate" and placed it in special measures.' The facility is in Melling's Giddygate Lane – the gated residents access only road that joins the M58 Motorway junction at Ashworth with Leatherbarrows Lane.

To understand Jeremy Corbyn look first at Vladimir Derer (who he?) says Sam Pallis. "Older voters ... tend to be risk averse as regards political change. However, in this instance they had a rare chance to vote to return to the UK of yesteryear, which in some cases certainly provoked nostalgia not only for what the UK looked like before 1973 but also what they themselves looked like." Elliott Green on how the power of nostalgia helped Leave win the referendum. "Burning trees for electricity is a bad idea," argues Bill McKibben. Jack Thurston on how disused railways are being ...

Nick Clegg has published his second Brexit briefing paper. This one looks at what Brexit means for Britain's international trading relationships. Whatever your view on Brexit, it makes a good primer on the many complex issues involved in unpicking our current arrangements. Those of us who regard Brexit as a disaster will be reinforced in our views by passages like this: If we sign an FTA with the EU, or seek to adopt a Norway-style relationship, then British exporters will also have to comply with complex 'rules of origin'. These rules require UK exporters to obtain proof of origin certificates ...

I shall be in London on Saturday morning, and had been planning to do a historic walk - however, it looks like the weather will not be suitable. Instead I think I will go and see the Bagpuss and Clangers exhibition at the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. Would anyone like to join me? I'd want to get there promptly at 10, and leave in time for my 1pm train home.

Second speech of third story (The Grand Betelgeuse Hotel, by Christopher Cooper): ACE: I plead total ignorance. You won't even tell me what I'm supposed to have done! There was a time when I regularly blogged my Big Finish listening as well as my books here. I may try and pick up that habit again - which in itself may inspire me to go back and re-listen to the dozens of audios I have listened to but not noted over the last few years. This was the December 2015 release of Big Finish's monthly range of audios, switching to the ...

photo by K Hodgson On an extremely wet Saturday morning a large crowd came and stayed for over an hour for the rededicating of the restored Bootle War Memorial. The work had been founded by a variety of sources including a large donation from the War Memorial Trust . This is one of the biggest grants made by the Trust. Despite the rain everyone listened attentively as the memorial was dedicated. The ceremony was a recreation of the one carried out in 1922 with the laying of wreaths I concluded the event by repeating the pledge made back then by ...

The number one priority of the Liberal Democrats is currently trying to do all we can to keep the UK in the European Union. However, if there is one other campaign that Liberal Democrats across the UK should be rallying behind, it is the fight to try and keep the iconic London club Fabric from closing. But why? Why is this of vital importance to all liberals across the nation? The possible 'targeting' of Fabric and the disgusting treatment that the club's owners have received by the authorities is something that every Liberal should be very worried about. Firstly, it ...

Nick Clegg's weekly column in the Evening Standard is back following the summer break, and in this week's Nick sees a link between three of the big news stories of recent weeks: The junior doctors' dispute is in part a casualty of focus-group policy-making. The Conservatives discovered — unsurprisingly — that the public, when asked, want a "seven-day NHS". So they entangled themselves in an increasingly bitter dispute to unpick the existing contractual arrangements governing junior doctors to deliver that promise, even though there is precious little evidence that the old contract was the impediment to a seven-day service in ...

Particularly after David Davis' waffle from the dispatch box on what Brexit might mean earlier this week, Corbyn was presented with a golden opportunity to expose Theresa May and the Tories' weak spot yesterday at PMQs. As usual, he declined the invitation. The Corbynistas like to talk about how the Guardian is a Blairite mouthpiece all the time, but given Andrew Sparrow called yesterday's PMQs a draw, I think they should be kinder to the publication in future. This is because it was an outright, embarrassing hammering by the prime minister on Corbyn yesterday; yet another chance to solidify the ...

With Labour facing inwards, divided and quarrelsome, another senior figure in the party is publicly questioning their competence as an opposition and the way that they are letting the Tories off the hook. The Guardian reports that the head of the Trades Union Congress has questioned whether Labour is ready to mount an effective opposition capable of winning a general election. They say that Frances O'Grady has voiced her concern that the party has been too focused on internal rows at a time when workers' rights are under threat as ministers decide the terms for Brexit: Her words come as ...
