Kate Nash: Foundations

If pop paints an accurate picture of youth culture, we have come a long way from "I Want to Hold Your Hand". Foundations was kept from the top of the singles chart by Rihanna and her silly Umbrella in 2007.

I spent today at the New Walk museum and art gallery in Leicester for a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Joe Orton's play Loot. The play had first gone on a provincial tour with an extraordinary cast - Kenneth Williams, Duncan Mcrae, Ian McShane, Geraldine McEwan - but had not pleased its audiences and been beset by constant rewrites in an attempt to put things right. Williams was a friend of Orton, but it is hard to see how he could ever have made a suitable Inspector Truscott. Loot was rescued by a new production in Manchester and two ...

I have lost track of how many times I have been told that the Wetherspoon pub chain is coming to Ludlow. When Woolworths closed, the gossips were certain that a Wetherspoon would open up any day. We got a Spar instead. When plans were touted to rebuild One Stop on Tower Street, the quidnuncs of... [IMG: arthur-koestler-3] Britain faces a challenging time in the next few years. We can meet these challenges if we are the best Britain we can be: open in our minds and hearts, tolerant and united. I am one of those who believes that history has much to teach us about ourselves and the present. Past and present are not the same. But by studying the mistakes of the past we have a greater to chance to do better in future. My 3 years as a history student have formed my mind as much as 13 years as a working lawyer ...

The Rt. Hon Boris Johnson Esq.Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth AffairsForeign and Commonwealth OfficeDowning Street WestLondon SW1A 2AL 25th September 2016 Dear Sir, It has been reported in the media that you intend to launch consultations on whether the Royal Yacht Britannia should be recommissioned for use as a floating embassy and, possibly, resume her role as a royal yacht. As a person who has often visited the yacht and can actually see her from my front window, I wish to register my objection to this scheme. First of all sir, I understand you have some reputation as ...

Second paragraph of third chapter, plus ensuing dialogue: It would be a gloomy secret night. After early nightfall the yellow lamps would light up, here and there, the squalid quarter of the brothels. He would follow a devious course up and down the streets, circling always nearer and nearer in a tremor of fear and joy, until his feet led him suddenly round a dark corner. The whores would be just coming out of their houses making ready for the night, yawning lazily after their sleep and settling the hairpins in their clusters of hair. He would pass by them ...

The Southport Visiter has the story on its web site – see link above Only days after my most recent blog posting about gun crime (18th September) on Merseyside and in particular in Sefton Borough – see link below – this happens in Lydiate! As an observer of public life across Merseyside I am becoming increasingly concerned about the number of shootings and gun crime incidents that seem to be taking place. It was not so long ago that Merseyside Police were giving the impression that they were getting on top of shootings/gun crime but it seems that ...

Tim Farron has been writing in the Independent about how the Liberal Democrats are the only party capable of providing decent opposition to the Conservatives following the re-election of Jeremy Corbyn: If one child was lifted out of poverty by Blair, that would be a progressive legacy. But what will Corbyn's legacy be? At this rate, to render Labour so unelectable that successive Tories will be able to play pass the parcel with the keys to Number 10. Perhaps the Corbynistas can afford such generosity to the Tories, but the people I grew up with in towns such as Preston ...

It's a wonder what Jeremy Corbyn can do for participation in politics as the cheeky Liverpool Lib Dem team and their recruitment stand outside the Labour conference have demonstrated: Our membership officer says we've hit our highest membership ever in Liverpool. We've known for some time that the Lib Dem Press Office has a very good sense of humour. This week the Huffington Post outlined 17 times the Lib Dem Press Office were the most entertaining thing in British politics. While the party may have struggled to make itself heard above the rhetoric of Brexit and the absurdities of the Labour leadership contest, there has been one facet of the party that has been consistently nailing it. Their press office. You wouldn't think it but the team's Twitter maestro(s) have been throwing all kinds of shade and sass into the digital ...

Boris skewered

For those who still question the portrayal of Boris Johnson as a national embarrassment in his role as Foreign Secretary, this article on the Reuters' website should put doubts to rest. They report that Germany and France have brushed aside comments from Johnson suggesting there is no link between the EU's principle of free movement and access to its single market, saying they could send Johnson a copy of the Lisbon Treaty and even travel to London to explain it to him in English. Apparently, Boris told Sky News television on Thursday that the EU's position that there was an ...

Over 300 people joined the Liberal Democrats yesterday in the wake of Jeremy Corbyn's re-election, That brings the total of new members to over 1000 this week. It's been a good week for the party, which has 3 more councillors in seats gained from both Labour and the Tories. Tim Farron welcomed the new members to the Lib Dems: I am delighted to welcome so many new members to the party and look forward to working with them to provide the real opposition to this Conservative Brexit Government. I arrived in Liverpool late yesterday afternoon. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but what I found was definitely not it. Instead of open civil war, a strange placidity has set in, like one imagines a city after a nuclear bomb attack. The remnants of a once great society are all that's left, and everyone is past the anger stage of grief. If a split in the PLP is announced today, it sure will come from nowhere. Amongst the Corbynistas there isn't even smugness on display – they've won so handily now there is no need. The party is ...

Thank you, Cheltenham

It's always interesting to talk to Liberal Democrat colleagues from Cheltenham who have chalked up a very impressive electoral record. Continuing to run the council all the way through multiple elections in the years of Coalition is a rare record, and in the 2013 county elections they scored the even rarer result of an increase in Lib Dem vote share across the district on 2009. (The only increase in the country, in fact, if you exclude the one other case where the vote share went up by dint of standing candidates.) It's not a perfect record, as the sad loss ...
