Embed from Getty Images Don't take my word for it: read Stephen Bush in the New Statesman: One thing is clear: the "Liberal Democrat fightback" is not just a hashtag. The party has been doing particularly well in affluent Conservative areas that voted to stay in the European Union. (It's worth noting that one seat that very much fits that profile is Theresa May's own stomping ground of Maidenhead.) It means that if, as looks likely, Zac Goldsmith triggers a by-election over Heathrow, the Liberal Democrats will consider themselves favourites if they can find a top-tier candidate with decent local ...

The great John Arlott fought Epping for the Liberal Party at the 1955 and 1959 general elections. Not only that: he was a regular panelist on Any Questions? which made him about the best known Liberal in the country before the party's revival under Jo Grimond. What is happening to my Country, it gets more like a place I feel ashamed of by the day. Brexit Britain is hardly a tolerant, welcoming place and we are all the worse off for that. My thanks to Roy Connell for the lead to this appalling story which shines the UK Government in a terrible light. In a free Country we should be celebrating people of all beliefs, sexual orientation and progressive outlooks. This is not the 1950's!!!!

The delay in the electrification of the Midland main line from St Pancras is going to cause problems. In the summer of 2015 the government announced a pause in the project. It was soon restarted, but that good news was accompanied by the news that it will take four years longer than originally planned. The electrification will reach now Kettering and Corby by 2019, and be extended to Leicester, Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield (and, indeed, Market Harborough) by 2023. This will cause problems. East Midlands Trains, which runs the service on this line, is due to phase out its High ...

Britain in the World

The Liberal Democrats pride themselves on being the most internationalist of Britain's political parties and a liberal, internationalist voice is going to be needed more than ever as the United Kingdom and several other parts of the world seem to be heading towards narrow nationalism and illiberal tendencies. Buoyed by last night's result in the [...]

This is essentially my 'hot take' on the Witney by-election. At time of writing it's almost 10pm here in South Korea. (Photo: BBC) So, the Tories held Witney while Labour easily topped the poll in Batley and Spen. No real surprises there. However, there's a bigger picture. A much bigger picture. Let's take Witney first - a by-election held because of the resignation of former Prime Minister David Cameron as the local MP. In 2015, just seventeen months ago, Cameron secured a majority of 25,155 with over 60% of the vote. Yesterday that majority was slashed to 5,702. You might argue that's still pretty comfortable for the Tories. Indeed, asked yesterday by a former party member what I genuinely thought the ...

The businesses of Formby had rallied around to sponsor the awards and local residents John Parrot, David Fairclough, and Elite Super Heavyweight Champion Alex Dickenson joined me in handing out the awards. Here's what the judges are looking for Should a songwriter have scooped the Nobel prize in literature? In the debate over this year's surprise award to Bob Dylan, it is easy to lose sight of the long history of prizes being used to recognise great writing (in whatever form), great research and other outstanding achievements. The use of prizes dates back furthest in the sciences. In 1714, the British government famously offered an award of £20,000 (about £2.5 million at ...

Those experts deserve a medal for services to the USA. Clinton's debate strategy has been a masterclass which will be written about for decades. Those experts have helped smoke out Donald Trump's true colours in the debate theatre, rather than leaving it to when he might have become President. I have been striking a note of caution for a while now about the potential for the Lib Dems to rise from the ashes. Local by-election results have been seized upon by both Lib Dem supporters and detractors as proof of the party being born again – I have been less convinced. Despite the Brexit vote and the meltdown of the Labour Party, the national polls have not favoured the Lib Dems, at least not as yet. This, to me, is more indicative of where things stand for the party as opposed to local election results, which after having lost ...

George Orwell in 1937 wrote, "Every middle-class person has a dormant prejudice which needs only a small thing to arouse it ... The notion that the working class have been absurdly pampered, hopelessly demoralised by doles, old-age pensions, free education etc. ... is still widely held; it has merely been shaken perhaps, by the recent recognition that unemployment does exist." (page 123). He wrote that in chapter 8 of The road to Wigan Pier, in which he discussed how class was viewed in England at that time. On the portrayal of the working class, Orwell wrote, "An attitude of sniggering ...

As Plaid Cymru gather in Llangollen for their annual conference all the media speculation centres on whether they will finally bite the bullet and enter into another formal coalition with Labour in the Welsh Assembly. One of the reasons Dafydd Elis Thomas walked away from Plaid was his perception that they are not serious about exercising power and their failure to form such an alliance. He certainly has backers for that view remaining within his former party. The BBC quote Leanne Wood as saying that there is "ongoing discussion" about whether it is better to formally share power, with members ...

Well, that was a great result at Witney. Congratulations to Liz Leffman who was an astonishingly brilliant candidate. This was the biggest swing from the Conservatives to the Lib Dems since the Winchester by-election in 1997. We moved from 4th to 2nd. In 2015 the Guardian described the 25,155 Tory majority at Witney as "ultra safe". Liz and team reduced that majority to just 5,702 with a very high turnout for a by-election – 47%. Labour were pushed into third place with both the Greens and UKIP losing their deposits. This really is an exceptional result. It was staggering to ...
