Click on the still above to view this short film on the British Film Institute website. There the blurb runs: 15-year-old Peter Ross may not have gone on to be the next Stirling Moss and would be far too young for any Champagne but he does have one important victory to his name: the 1959 Rutland Grand Prix. This downhill race for homemade go-karts brings out the camera of ATV's Midland Montage magazine programme with reporter Leslie Dunn, who was also regular on the BBC's Archers radio serial at the time.Dunn played Christine's husband Paul, who deserted her and was ...

[IMG: Bertrand Russell] The Democrats ran Hillary Clinton because it was "her turn", argues Rachael Larimore, and that was a big mistake. Olivia Goldhill calls on philosophers to engage with contemporary political debates. "It is not satirists' job to ensure the behavior being attacked is being perpetrated only by the highest members of society. Instead, satirists expose and explain all of humanity's failings with humor." Gladstone says satire should punch up, down and sideways. When is it time to let a building die? Rachel Morley visits St Andrew's, Walpole, in Norfolk and ponders this question. "The dead may be gone, ...

Can the inspector's decision to approve 137 homes off Foldgate Lane be challenged? Yes, but it is not easy. Shropshire Council, parish councils or residents could launch a judicial review against the decision by the planning inspectorate. This must be lodged within six weeks of the appeal decision on 10 November. I think Shropshire Council... In recent years I have heard a lot of complaining. Not about big issues. No, the most complaining I hear is how hard the World and other people treat people. This has happened a lot in the places I work in and the universities I have studied in. It has happened within my own friendship groups and family. People seem to feel that the World owes them something. They feel that they themselves are constant victims of something. Guess what? The World doesn't owe you shit. You are owed nothing. People don't naturally have to be nice to you. People ...

Dear stakeholder, I would like to offer my wholehearted apologies for the severe disruption on Thameslink services this week. I appreciate that this has been immensely frustrating to our customers on the back of the extended disruption last week after a power surge damaged signalling systems in the Luton area. Thanks to the wonderful people at Aukey they've sent me some stuff to test. First up is the Aukey Nylon Braided Lightning Cable. [IMG: img_20161118_101500] [IMG: img_20161118_101524] By being braided it should be less likely to kink compared to the cable that Apple provide with their iPhones. It's also less likely to knot up, however when trying to pack it does like to spring out. At 1.2 metres long you can use the phone whilst on charge without having to sit next to the wall. Being Apple MFI certified, your phone won't moan about using an unsupported cable. As with ...

The Liverpool Echo has the story – see link above How many more serious accidents do there have to be at the junction of Mairscough Lane, Southport Road and Church Lane (by St. Thomas' Church and just down the road from Church View Farm) in Lydiate before Sefton Council takes some action? This latest one (on Wednesday evening) was an amazing escape for the car driver in particular but it could well have been so much worse. Indeed, there have been deaths at this infamous accident black spot and the crunches of car metal keep on coming. [IMG: Lydiate ...

I am pleased that kerbside collection of cardboard for recycling is coming back to South Shropshire in December. This is long overdue. We have had to endure five years without kerbside collection. Cardboard is a vital resource and we should not be burning it in the Battlefield incinerator. When we resume household collection, we should... What's the triple lock thingy then? Liberal Democrats, whilst in coalition government, successfully campaigned and introduced the 'triple lock' on pensions, so that the state pension rises every year in line with wages, prices or 2.5% - whichever is highest. Why did you do that then? It was promised it in our 2010 manifesto and [...]

In yesterday's FT former French president Nicholas Sarkozy suggests reforming the European Union, and then offering Britain the chance to rejoin it. This does not look a practical proposition, but it is a useful thought experiment. How should the Union be reshaped? First of all, we must get past the current British obsession with Brexit. ... I've noticed a trend amongst a particular yet large section of the Right in Britain since Trump won. It is something that actually started after June 23rd came and went, but that the Trump victory has made a lot stronger. It is a triumphalism based on a set of perceived centre-right values that has not only changed since May 2015, but in most cases has actually come to be the opposite of what it was only a short time ago. This has redefined what it means to be a "conservative" so much that the term has already begun to lose ...

Liberal Democrat Councillors in Redcar are demanding greater rights for private sector tenants. Councillor Lisa Harding, who represents West Dyke ward, has put forward a motion to Redcar and Cleveland Council requesting support for the Renters' Rights Bill. The bill is currently in the House of Lords. The bill is the work of Lib Dem Baroness Olly Grender. If passed, it would: 1. Ban letting fees for renters, a practice already outlawed in Scotland which is allowing letting agents to charge both the landlord and the tenant for services. 2. Give renters access to an open register of rogue landlords ...

As regards the proposal to charge for emptying green waste bins the question was asked at this afternoon's Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council meeting by my Lib Dem colleague Councillor Glyn Nightingale. Cabinet Member Councillor Alex Brown accepted that a number of local authorities have started to do this but he gave an assurance that the current administration would not be introducing a charge. This reply will be on the record in the Council minutes and also recorded in the video of the meeting which will appear on the Council's website very soon.
