Welcome to Broxtowe Enews, brought to you by the Liberal Democrats and edited by David Watts, on behalf of the Lib-Dems in Broxtowe. Many apologies that there was no edition last week but I was away with the family for a few days. I also have a plea. Someone emailed me a couple of weeks back about the impact of the HS2 on their home. I do want to reply but unfortunately I can't find the original email. If that was you please would you resend it. 1. Anna Soubry MP I am starting this week with a couple of unpleasant ...

But I aten't well, either. Some combination of my new blood pressure medication, a bad reaction to a flu jab I had on Wednesday, and my arthritis has meant that I've basically been non-functional since Wednesday afternoon. (I'll spare you ... Continue reading →

For several years now residents have been asking for cycle parking, in the form of BikeHangars, to be installed close to their homes. Without secure bicycle parking people can't easily own bicycles let alone use them. So far Southwark Council have organised 99 such BikeHangars each hosting 6 bicycles. But they have another 100 residents from across the borough requesting such bicycle parking. My experience in East Dulwich is that from expressing an interest to a BikeHangar happening or being told it wont happen takes 2-3 years. It is ridiculous that it takes so very long. Sadly the cabinet member ...

"In Ireland you must choose your tribe. Reason has nothing to do with it." So wrote J.G. Farrell in his 1970 novel Troubles. While much of what has happened politically in 2016 has felt both tribal and irrational to me, psychology suggests that we don't even need big issues to persuade us to pick our tribe. Embed from Getty Images Often we get into a habit of walking past homeless/needy people sitting on the side of the street. We are told that it is wrong to give them money, so we just pass awkwardly by. It takes a lot of courage, but with temperatures dropping, I would suggest just stopping and chatting to the next person you see in such a situation. They may ask for money – and I would suggest declining that request. But what you can do is offer to go and buy them a drink of coffee/tea/soup or a sandwich or some ...

So after a brief period away while I set up my own business, I'm back . And what better reason to start blogging again than the return of a Lib Dem MP in my own constituency and the home of Ham Common - Richmond Park and North Kingston. This is my first 'home' by election after 20 odd years living here in Ham, and its been quite an experience. Others have blogged about the amazing number of activists who've arrived from all over the country and have done such a brilliant job (for which of course a million thanks), but ...

I didn't expect to stay up into the early hours of Friday morning to watch the Richmond by-election result live. I decided to watch a bit of the coverage at midnight to get an indication of how things were going and then go to bed. But then I saw Sky News interview Lib Dem MP Alistair Carmichael who wasn't giving too much away verbally but whose smile suggested we were doing well. I decided to

First a little about myself. I am 53 years old and have worked in health care for over 22 years. I have voted Liberal, latterly Liberal Democrat, for nearly 40 years now. I, like others, have been frustrated by the ongoing swing politics that has affected the United Kingdom since the last war. Whilst like many others I am saddened by the outcome of the referendum I know as a party we are committed to be outward looking and pro-European. This will mean maintaining and fostering close links our European neighbours. However we need to plan now as to how ...

Watching the recent TV programme about the closure of Kellingley Colliery (the UK's last deep mine) which ceased cutting coal in December 2015 was a odd moment for me as I come from a coal mining family. [IMG: Bentinck Colliery - Photographer unknown] Bentinck Colliery – Photographer unknown Two of my uncles were miners; one long dead (Henry Wright was a winding man at Bentinck Colliery in Kirkby In Ashfield) but the other only passed on in the last couple of weeks. Interesting news from Amsterdam: Amsterdam has developed an Airbnb for city-owned offices, so residents can use them for free, and may do the same with municipal cars and tools. The project is due to be launched by the city government with access to some 15 underused meeting rooms around the turn of the year, and will be extended to more rooms along with vehicles and tools if it is a success. 'You walk through these buildings and all these meeting rooms are empty,' Nanette Schippers, an official in the city's Chief Technology Office and one of the creators of the ...

Many, myself and Frank Field included, have said that Paul Nuttall could be a game changer for UKIP. The new leader has certainly wasted no time in getting stuck in, appointing Gerald Batten as UKIP's Brexit spokesman. And between Nuttall and Batten, a policy of genius has already emerged. It's so perfect, I want to give you Batten's take on it unabridged before we go any further: "If (May) were genuine about delivering Brexit she would have triggered article 50 the moment she became prime minister. Instead nothing has been done in the last five months, and there are no ...

This is St Barnabas Church in Jericho, Oxford, and the Oxford Canal. Despite what Inspectot Morse and Lewis would have you believe, it is a desirable part of the city. I was there a few years ago, and I think the fence was there because of the controversial redevelopment of Jericho's boatyard, See Paul Kingsnorth's Real England for more on this.

The final day of Congress is when the decisions get taken – electing Bureau members, determining policy, agreeing statute changes. Everything builds up to a frenzy of voting, as delegates are asked to vote for or against as many as twenty-five resolutions in one rather manic one hour session. This is only possible because the big arguments take place in working group sessions on day 2, where compromises are reached and recommendations made to the plenary session the next day. For Liberal Democrats, this is a source of some wonderment, especially for those who have been to too many Federal ...
