This Londonist video takes us to the Waterloo and Reading line and the least used station in Surrey. There used to be a Ministry of Defence tank test track nearby, but that closed in 2006 and there are now film studios right by it instead. Read more about Longcross station on Diamond Geezer.

Vince Cable in the New Statesman argues makes a case for "a more rational immigration policy". He has thus made a break with the unashamed pro-Europeanism that has done so much to raise Liberal Democrat spirits and won himself widespread criticism within the party. But I was struck by this aside in his article: One uncomfortable feature of the referendum was the large Brexit vote among British Asians, many of whom resented the contrast between the restrictions they face and the welcome mat laid out for Poles and Romanians. Some in the Leave campaign tried to capitalise on this disaffection among ...

Embed from Getty Images Back in 2012 I wrote: Lord Leveson has not produced his recommendations yet, and when he does many of us of a Liberal persuasion may not like them. But we can already say that his inquiry has been a great success. That is because it has laid bare the working of politicians and the media. We have heard editors, owners and politicians describing that they do under forensic questioning and on oath. It seems it was the US Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis who first said "sunlight is the best disinfectant". He was right, but the ...

Well here's an opportunity for someone to apply for. I must admit when I first saw the ad' I thought of SCS or some such furniture company as surely they could provide a chair:-)))) Seriously, such organisations usually have someone waiting in the wings to fill a position like this, so does this indicate that there is no one or that whomever is wanting the role is maybe not wanted?

That's the good news I got from a health scrutiny meeting this morning, directly from the Chief Executive of the County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust. In response to my question she told me that the "owners" of the hospital, NHS Property Services Limited, had told her that their contractors should finish the remedial work they have been doing by the end of January, and once that was completed it would be safe to start the process o reopening the ward which was shut because of the risks patients would have faced if an emergency evacuation had been needed as ...

Last year, the government revalued all 1.96 million non-domestic properties in England and Wales.[1] In England, rateable values will be increased by an average of 10% from 1 April 2017. Across Shropshire, they are going up 13%. And here in Ludlow rateable values are going up by an eyewatering 37%, nearly four times the national average.[2] This does not bode well for the future of local businesses, though in the short term there is more good news than bad. Over the next five years increases in business rates will be reduced by a complex series of reliefs and changes to ...

As 2017 begins, the politics of unreason seems to be spreading its influence across British politics and media. Liam Fox inside the government, and John Redwood and Peter Lilley outside, are arguing that we don't need to negotiate a treaty with the EU as we leave. They propose that Britain simply reasserts its sovereignty, and to hell with international law, commercial and security interests, and rights of access and residence elsewhere across the EU for the 50 million journeys UK citizens make every year. (Peter Lilley, like Nigel Lawson, lives part of the year in France; you'd have thought he ...

Vince Cable writes for this week's New Statesman arguing for the end to the EU's free movement of people. He builds on the themes he initially set out on an article for this site just after the referendum – which turned out to be our most read article of 2016. In the New Statesman he writes: As a liberal economist, I welcome freer trade and globalisation in general; and as a political liberal I oppose attempts to fence people in. I naturally value the freedom to travel around Europe for business or pleasure with minimal restriction. But I have serious ...

John Kerry, seeing out his last few days as Secretary of State, has discussed 2013 and the red line that never was regarding Syria rather candidly. "The president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, did decide to use force and he announced his decision publicly and he said we're going to act, we're going to do what we need to do to respond to this blatant violation of international law and of warnings and of the red line he had chosen. Now, we were marching towards that time when, lo and behold ... Prime Minister David Cameron went ...

Donald Trump is in a no-win situation as regards Russian hacking vs. American intelligence agencies vs Donald Trump. Putin, as we all know by now, has been accused by all the American intelligence agencies (and several foreign ones) of hacking into the computers of the Democratic National Committee and leaking the contents to help Trump win the US presidency. The Russian President has denied this as he has denied many other misdeeds. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, he channel for the leaks, has backed him up. So has Donald Trump. On the other side of the fence are, not surprisingly, a ...

It is difficult to know to what extent the future of the nuclear industry will feature in the forthcoming by-election in Copeland but it is a fair bet that the many people whose livelihoods depend on the Sellafield nuclear plant and the Barrow-in-Furness shipyard which builds the Navy's new Trident nuclear submarines, will be keen to get the candidate's views on this issue. Labour are defending a razor-slim 2,564 majority in the constituency and already they are getting antsy at the prospect at the anti-nuclear, anti-Trident Jeremy Corbyn coming to the constituency for the campaign. The Daily Mirror says that ...

Good news from Ilkley where, last night, we gained a Parish Council seat in the Ilkley South ward from the Greens. Congratulations to Mark Stidworthy. The result was: Liberal Democrats 429 Labour 171 Very well done to the campaign team who kept the momentum going through the festive period, which is particularly difficult to do. Not only is there another Lib Dem voice in local government, but they have kicked off the 2017 scoresheet for us.
