The Lib Dem Lords have made some cracking contributions to the debate on the Article 50 Bill. Ahead of its next Lords stages, we're bringing you all the Lib Dem contributions over the course of this weekend. That's no mean feat. There were 32 of them and cover more than 30,000 words. You are not expected to read every single one of them as they appear. Nobody's going to be testing you or anything. However, they will be there to refer to in the future. Our Lords excelled themselves. Their contributions were thoughtful, individual, well-researched and wide-ranging and it's right ...

When I met Lib Dem councillor Barbara Johnson at our coffee morning today we discussed the Harborough Mail's story of the week: BT seems to have made an unpopular call on Market Harborough's High Street - by removing the red phone box. The phone box disappeared on the back of a contractor's truck last Thursday, after being dislodged from its familiar place outside property consultants Fisher German. No one was told in advance that it was going, and now almost everyone is missing it. Local councillor Barbara Johnson is furious, saying: "It's been part of the street scene in a ...

Following on from last week's Trading Standards warning about rogue traders, this week the police have issued a warning about distraction burglaries after an incident in Yate. At approximately 11am on Thursday February 16th, two unknown men came to an address in Priors Lea, Yate, saying that they were there to do some work inside. They pushed a large hole in the ceiling before leaving, saying they would be return to fix it. The victim later discovered that they had stolen a box of valuables. The Police are reminding residents to be wary of unexpected visitors. Use a door chain ...

This presentation with notes, is the material I used for a discussion at the Christchurch Think Tank (via the "What's On" link) entitled "The search for justice: Christian involvement in politics". You need to download it to see the notes. I wasn't happy with the result. That is to say in terms of the quality of the final presentation; I do not know how much of the desired effect it had on the audience. Ideas evolve, but these needed to evolve more than most. In particular it was long on analysis, but short on action. I think the ideas were ...

The Lib Dem Lords have made some cracking contributions to the debate on the Article 50 Bill. Ahead of its next Lords stages, we're reminding you of some of the best over the course of this weekend. Their contributions were thoughtful, individual, well-researched and wide-ranging – unlike the stream of Tories who got up to repeat what seemed to have been a script handed down from the Whips which basically said "The Lib Dems said they wanted an in-out referendum and now they aren't accepting the result. Na na na na na." We kick off with Leader Dick Newby's cracking ...

Last year I covered the odd case of a man facing trial on electoral fraud charges who managed to get the trial delayed... because he was running for Police and Crime Commissioner. When I published that earlier post, he commented on this site, saying, "with complaints about the investigating Policeman, the behaviour of the Judge, the incompetence of the Court, and the fact that the CPS have only circumstantial evidence, it is most unlikely that this case will ever go to trial". Well, the trial has now happened and Steve Uncles of the English Democrats found guilty: A disgraced far-right ...

Britain Elects has published the third in its briefings for May's elections, this one covering English authorities. It points out that Labour's potential for making gains is limited. May's elections will largely concern county councils, which are more rural and more Conservative leaning than England in general. And last time these seats were fought (2013) Labour had a national opinion poll lead of 7-10 points under Ed Miliband's leadership. But what does it say about the Liberal Democrats? I hear you ask: Cornwall, electing a hefty 123 councillors, is another one to keep an eye out for. Of the eleven ...

What's in a Name?

[IMG: Military Road street sign] MILITARY ROAD RECREATION GROUND Sandgate Parish Council is considering renaming Military Road Recreation Ground to better reflect the improvements which have been, and are to be, carried out to the park and to highlight its value as a community asset to the whole village. The park has previously been named Chichester Park, and other suggestions from a previous exercise to rename included Golden Park and Field of Dreams. Councillors also suggested Sandgate Park: but perhaps you have a much better name! We are now asking for any other nominations for a new name to be ...

Kirsty Williams has been speaking to the South Wales Argus about her role as Education Secretary in the Welsh Government. She has great ambitions for the role. I want to have an education system that the profession are proud of and parents and learners have confidence in. That is quite a high bar, and she wants to work in partnership with those groups, unlike a certain former English education secretary whose tenure in office seemed to alienate everyone. I am confident that by working together we can achieve my ultimate goal, which is to have a first-class education system for ...

Every politician at some stage or another has a beef about a particular journalist, a publication or a media outlet. It is part of the job. You shrug your shoulders and carry on, because effective scrutiny, no matter how inaccurate you think it is or how partisan, is what makes our democracy tick. And let's face it, the journalist is just doing his or her job. It is when a politician starts to use their position to penalise those who don't agree with them that we really need to worry. A coup d'etat starts with the TV and radio stations. ...

On Thursday, 52000 people went to the polls in Copeland and Stoke on Trent Central to elect their new MPs. Both seats were previously held by Labour. Labour held onto Stoke, but were beaten by the Conservatives in Copeland. People are using these results in order to speculate wildly about the future of various political parties. Labour holding Stoke is a good sign. Labour losing Copeland means Corbyn should resign. Conservatives taking Copeland is a sign of support for May's hard Brexit. Everyone is very happy that Nuttall lost. And so on. However, looking at the voting data available, I ...

Yesterday, Jeremy Corbyn gave a speech in Westminster yesterday about, well, the road to Brexit. Coming on the same day that the loss of Copeland was announced, it took on an interesting texture. Introducing the event was Sergei Stanishev, a Bulgarian MEP who is the president of the Party of European Socialists. I think perhaps Labour HQ and Sergei should have touched base about messaging beforehand. From the his intro, you would have thought that Brexit was something that the Tories were trying to inflict on the country but that Labour were not going to let happen come hell or ...
