© University of Birmingham As I wrote when posting a video about her work, Phyllis Nicklin was staff tutor in Geography in the University of Birmingham's Department of Extra Mural Studies in the 1950s and 1960s. She died in 1969, leaving behind thousands of colour slides she had taken for her classes. Many show a city in the throes of redevelopment. Some of those slides have been scanned by the university and can be reproduced for non-commercial purposes. So here is a cycle shop in Harborne photographed in 1961. A search on Google Street View shows that the building still ...

When I first became truly conscious of my sexual desires towards other boys, I was a fourteen-year-old devout Catholic who attended church every Sunday and believed. I knelt in those pew benches and I prayed. I ask God and Jesus (apparently they are one in the same) for help in a variety of aspect of my life at the time. The first major obstacle was my homosexuality and for good reason. Christianity says homosexuality is sinful When LGBT advocates and Christians alike come to point that the bible is fundamentally against homosexuality, they point to Leviticus 18:22 which states: "Thou ...

Here's a short cine film of the British Celanese Motor Club's treasure hunt, held on 21st March 1965. This was one of an annual programme of motoring events that also included paced drives (rallies). As the club was affiliated to the RAC and the events had to be notified to the local police, it all seemed to be taken pretty ... "I am running the London Marathon on the 23rd of April 2017 to raise money for COSMIC (Children of St Mary's Intensive Care). You can make a donation here. Here is why I am doing it." In an unbearably moving post, Mark Thompson tells the story of his son Olly's short life. Catherine Bearder explains why the Liberal Democrats want to let Britons keep their EU passports after Brexit: "Many young people are desperate to travel Europe and seek out opportunities to study, meet new people, learn languages and new skills. Can the people who voted Leave deny their children, ...

[Below is the text of my review which first appears on the Edinburgh49.org review website] Casanova, a brand new ballet on it's world premier tour, choreographed by Kenneth Tindall in his first major work. This could have gone either way but be reassured: this is a really exciting piece. The story itself is based upon the life of Giacomo Casanova, taken from Ian Kelly's biography of Casanova. It starts with Casanova (Giuliano Contadini), a trainee priest, intent upon following his vocation when he meets musicians the Savorgnan Sisters, Nanetta & Marta (Abigail Prudames and Minju Kang). Together the sisters ...

The Home Secretary Amber Rudd has demanded that security services be given access to users' encrypted messages on services like WhatsApp. It's kind of good that we have someone who actually knows what they are talking about, because they have been an Assistant Commissioner in the Metropolitan Police, to assess these plans. Brian Paddick is not impressed. He said: These terrorists want to destroy our freedoms and undermine our democratic society. By implementing draconian laws that limit our civil liberties, we would playing into their hands. My understanding is there are ways security services could view the content of suspected ...

Easily the most annoying thing about Corbyn's time as Labour leader (and that is saying something) has been the moves to look like the party won't block Brexit for any reason while simultaneously vowing to be tough on May's Brexit plans. It has meant that nothing Labour has said or done since June 23rd of last year has made the slightest bit of sense. They wanted to seem like they were listening to both Remainers and Leavers ; instead, it seems like the haven't listened to either side. Mostly because they haven't actually listened to either side. Keir Starmer has ...

Ukip's loss of its one MP brings to mind its previous unhappy experiment with having an MP, Bob Spink. He too left the party and ended up standing as an independent. But then even worse happened: Former Conservative MP Bob Spink, who defected to Ukip and became its first MP, has been charged with electoral fraud. The 68-year-old has been charged alongside a second man, 38-year-old James Parkin, over allegations that they submitted false signatures on Ukip nomination papers. The accusations relate to the local election for Castle Point Borough Council in south Essex, England in 2016. [Irish Times] Keep ...

I got home yesterday afternoon from a bit of Lib Dem video filming in Teeside, switched on the news to watch any updates about the Unite for Europe march in London (I wasted my time with the BBC but Sky News covered it) and discovered that UKIP are no longer represented in the House of Commons. Their sole MP, the semi-detached Douglas Carswell, has taken too literally the meaning of "Independence

I'm not one for celebrating birthdays. My own would pass me by if it did not pop up on Facebook. But I think it worth recording that my emailed Ludlow Newsletters today are three years old. My best estimate is that they are read by around 1,000 people. That's okay for a small town newsletter written by a small town councillor. It was always my aim to tell people what was happening. The way that councils operate too often is obscure, hidden behind closed doors or in committees that people can't attend. This blog has been going for more than ...

Last night there were three principal council by-elections. One of them produced an interesting 'null and void' declaration while in West Somerset there was an outstanding Liberal Democrat gain from the Conservatives in an election for the district council. First to Blackburn UA. Higher Croft ward saw a by-election in December 2016, had one yesterday and is now set for a third in usual circumstances. Last night the Labour candidate won but the result was immediately declared null and void because he was employed by an external organisation on which Blackburn UA had places on the governing board of trustees. ...

This Spencer Davis Group cover of a song first recorded by Brenda Holloway comes from Their First LP, which was their first LP. As the album was released in July 1965, Steve Winwood was 17 at the most when he sang this and presumably played piano and organ on it too.

Welcome to the latest in my series of tips and advice for Liberal Democrat members, which appear first in the email bulletin run by London Region for party members. We've previously mentioned the benefits of having the Liberal Democrat canvassing app, MiniVAN, and the official Lib Dem federal conference app, but this week it's time to highlight a non-party app that is massively useful: FixMyStreet. FixMyStreet makes it really easy to report casework such as potholes, faulty street lights and graffiti whilst out and about using your smartphone – and then also to track progress on resolving them afterwards. Some ...

It goes without saying that if UKIP were not in the mess that they are the press would be all over Labour's internal troubles even more than they have been. So Labour must be glad of UKIP continually grabbing the political misery headlines (with the help of a BBC obsessed by UKIP) as it helps keep their troubles under the radar somewhat. But just look at the facts, they are startling and they show how deeply troubled the Labour Party is despite it having a terrible far right Tory Party Government to hit against. Here are just some of their ...

Last weekend the Liberal Democrats Spring Conference voted to support Guy Verhofstadt's proposed initiative to allow Brits to keep their EU citizenship (if they want to!). Lib Dems believe that with our country split nearly 50/50 on our EU membership, it would be unfair to allow the process of leaving the EU to completely ignore the wishes of the side that narrowly lost and who want to continue with the EU. But it is not simply an issue of fairness that we are asking for Brits to be allowed to apply for EU citizenship. It is that as liberals and ...

The decision by UKIP's only member of parliament, Douglas Carswell, to quit his party to become an independent MP has been a long-time coming. As the Guardian reports, Carswell, who defected from the Conservative party to UKIP in August 2014, said he was leaving "amicably, cheerfully and in the knowledge that we won": He said he would not be standing down before the next general election, and claimed there was no need for a byelection because he was not joining another party. UKIP, he added, had achieved its founding aims with the vote to leave the EU. "After 24 years, ...
