Where were you when you first heard the news that Theresa May had decided to rip up the Fixed Term Parliaments Act and sent the wrecking ball hurtling towards the Labour Party? I was at Durham Hens at the time, buying a couple of white leghorns and 18 hatching eggs. Claims by May that the country is somehow uniting behind her are rubbish. Her demand that Parliament should unite behind her, and

This is a thing that once happened. A small piece of history today as Parliament voted to dissolve itself for the first time. Like all momentous historical decisions, it was taken after a 90-minute debate that they'd only had twenty four hours notice of, but that's still actually more democratic than just making dissolutions solely at prime ministerial fiat. By such small steps do we stumble towards democracy, and then canter into a general election that's been called specifically because the Prime Minister doesn't think that a Parliamentary majority gives her enough unchecked power to do whatever she wants. And ...

Manchester Gorton by-election is off After some back and forth between the Returning Officer and Parliament, the necessary steps have been taken by Parliament to cancel the Parliamentary by-election which was due. There is no direct legal power for the Returning Officer to cancel a by-election which has been overtaken by a general election being called; Parliament, however, has the power to cancel the writ for the by-election. Wikipedia makes it all clear: The Hundred of Hoo Railway is a railway line in Kent, England, following the North Kent Line from Gravesend before diverging at Hoo Junction near Shorne Marshes and continuing in an easterly direction across the Hoo Peninsula, passing near the villages of Cooling, High Halstow, Cliffe and Stoke before reaching the Isle of Grain and the container port on its eastern tip, Thamesport. There used to be a short branch line leading from Stoke Junction to the coastal town of Allhallows but this closed from 4 December 1961, the same date on which the Hundred ...

Natalie Bloomer reports on events in Northampton South: A Conservative MP has been pitched into a battle with his own local party over whether he can stand in the upcoming general election. David Mackintosh, MP for Northampton South, has been heavily criticised for his involvement in the loss of a £10.25 million loan to Northampton Town football club by the local council. The loan, which was approved while Mackintosh was the leader of the council, has not been repaid and the work it was intended for has not been carried out. This triggered a series of investigations, including an ongoing ...

TV debates... I guess it was inevitable Theresa May would try and un-invent them. After all, what's in it for her? There's no reward, only risk. Tim Farron would relish the spotlight, and as the Lib Dems are the only actual threat to Tory seats it's only rational for her to avoid sharing the stage. Heck, even Jeremy Corbyn might out-shine her; he's a lot more experience of hustings than she has. The truth is that while Theresa May is a serious politician with plenty of strengths, she's actually not very good unscripted. Even semi-scripted occasions (aka PMQs) she struggles ...

This is in contrast to the local Brexiteer Tory MP Anne Main, whose greatest contribution to recent national debate was encouraging countryside walkers to flick away their dog poo. Time for another video... Here's what I say in it: Winners and Losers* So there's going to be another General Election. Maybe you're not that excited. Maybe you're still disappointed by the last one. In a democracy, you get choices. So you expect the people who made a different choice to be disappointed. But the great about democracy is that if you wanted something different, you can always keep putting another point of view, and there will always be another vote. Wanting to silence dissent or saying one vote counts for ever is sticking a knife in democracy. We've had ...

Loyalty and respect

Politics in the UK seems to be in flux following the Brexit vote. With the Tories split between remain and leave and Labour too busy squabbling amongst themselves to be effective it ought to be a time for the Liberal Democrats. Yet, so far, although we have seen many individual members of both the Labour and Conservative parties switch to the Lib Dems, only a handful of councillors and no MPs or MEPs have done so. Why is this? I want to suggest that in the case of the Labour Party there are two factors; loyalty and respect We often ...

It's just been announced that, subject to approval by MPs, the Gorton poll will be cancelled as a by-election and will now take place along with all the other seats on 8th June. The Cabinet Office said the election for the vacant seat, planned for 4 May, would now take place on 8 June as part of the nationwide polling day. It seems clear to me that the Lynton Crosby Tory campaign will go with the highly successful "vote LibDem, get a coalition or chaos with awful people" stratergy in order to stop us. This works very well with Ed Milliband (rather unfairly) but imagine how much more effective this will be with Corbyn! We need to neutralise this early, but how? It's responsible and right to address the shortcomings for tenants of a private rental market that now accounts for 19% of all households. Is is just stupidity and not paying attention to the road? Is it simply being confused by a complicated junction? Twenty four hours since Theresa May told us she wanted an election, and what have we seen? Nick Clegg has announced this morning that he will defend his Sheffield Hallam seat. He explained why: Theresa May has called a General Election out of opportunism and intolerance: opportunism in seeking to exploit the weakness of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour party; and intolerance in seeking a landslide majority to bring about 'unity', by which she means the ability to impose whatever interpretation of Brexit she wishes without meaningful scrutiny from Parliament. Meanwhile, her Brexit-obsessed Government is failing to provide the decent schools, hospitals and social care which communities, including those I represent in Sheffield, rightly deserve. This ...
