[IMG: A lynx yesterday] I find it hard to explain why this news fills me with such joy: After an absence of 1,300 years, the lynx could be back in UK forests by the end of 2017. The Lynx UK Trust has announced it will apply for a trial reintroduction for six lynx into the Kielder forest, Northumberland, following a two-year consultation process with local stakeholders. The secretive cat can grow to 1.5m in length and feeds almost exclusively by ambushing deer. Attacks on humans are unknown, but it was hunted to extinction for its fur in the UK. The ...

Something has gone very wrong with this report on BBC News: The Lib Dems, who now have 12 MPs having gained four seats at the general election, are currently undergoing a leadership contest, following the resignation of Tim Farron. Lord Ashdown said that while he had "a wonderful time" leading the party between 1988 and 1999, he would not be standing in the contest, which at the moment has just the one entrant - former business secretary Sir Vince Cable. "When you leave the stage, you leave the stage... my job is to help my party to continue to survive ...

Hurrah! The good news on Wednesday morning was that my white blood cell (neutrophil) count was just above the minimum for "normal" adults for the first time in three tests. This would suggest that my bone marrow is hanging on in there after all. I'm therefore back on the watch and wait routine until September, assuming that nothing out of ... We've had Jamie Stone's maiden speech, but what else have our MPs been up to in Parliament this week? Jo Swinson intervened on Emily Thornberry to make a point about the recognition of Palestine. I am interested in and listening with great care to what the right hon. Lady is saying about recognition of Palestine, and particularly about what the Government's position was some years ago. Does she share my concern that, given the Minister's comments today, it seems that that position has moved and that recognition is being ruled out until the end of talks on a peace process ...

Liam Fox, the current international trade secretary, has had a go at the BBC. This is not news – the Beeb is the go to bad guy for anyone on the hard-right and hard-left these days. In fact, your opinion of the BBC tells the world a lot about your politics at the moment: if you think it's definitely biased in one way or another, you have veered out of the centre-right/centre-left axis and joined team Farage-Corbyn. Weirdly, the desirability of hard Brexit tends to correspond exactly to this new political alignment, but I'll leave that to one side for ...

New Youth Bus for Yate

Yate Town Council has launched a new Youth Bus sothat youth workers can get out and about and keep in contact with local youngsters aroud the town. The bus is called the Urbie - the Urban Vehicle for Information and Education - and it replaces an older, smaller vehicle that the Town Council used successfully for many years. Yate Town Council are very grateful for the support of local organisations and businesses including Merlin Housing Society, the Avon and Somerset Police Community Trust, Renishaw, One Stop Carriers for Causes, Sodbury and Yate Business Association and Yate and District Rotary Club. ...

Stability. Order. Security. That is what these big multinational summits are meant to project. They are designed to reassure the lower orders (that's you, me and a few billion others), that Planet Earth is in safe hands as it hurtles around the sun at 66,000 miles per hour. I am not reassured. In fact, a look at the G20 Hamburg line-up has left me seriously worried. North Korea now has an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, nuclear weapons and a juvenile dictator with a bad haircut. But Russia, China and America cannot agree on how to deal with him. Russia, the United ...

Fears amongst more moderate MPs that Jeremy Corbyn's relative success during the General Election will see their dissent punished by possible deselection have come to the fore after a challenge to the Liverpool Wavertree MP, Luciana Berger to tow the line or find herself out on her ear. As the Guardian reports, Berger was challenged to get behind the leadership after eight out of 10 positions in the constituency Labour party went to Corbyn loyalists. Soon after winning his new role, Roy Bentham, the trade union liaison officer, told the Liverpool Echo: "Luciana needs to get on board quite quickly ...

I have been surprised by the number of people who have asked me to post the contribution I made at the Mayor Making. So here are my notes: Congratulations to the new Mayor and his wife Wendy I would particularly like to thank my wife and three daughters who have been a great support Council staff- esp Mike Hassett. Kevin and Stephen (my immediate predecessors) I know share my view; Mike is conscientious to a fault, 100% reliable, determined to do his best and takes great pride in his work. Amongst all the chaos of the last year, he was ...

We are all sick and tired of austerity which has in effect been inflicted upon us as a consequence 'casino banking' and the subsequent financial crash. And yes it has caused great harm to the public services we all rely on. But one, maybe the only positive consequence is that public services which for years have operated in glorious isolation from each other have had to look at innovative solutions to service delivery. Basing ambulances in fire stations or other similar solutions that bring together sometimes all 3 emergency services under one roof is an example. Having said that the ...

Just to thank residents for raising the issue of the missing street sign at the bottom of Tamworth Avenue (Carisbrook Avenue end). The Council will be replacing this later in the year. Apparently to be most efficient these are done in batches to be most cost effective, so it might not be until the autumn, but just so people know it is is scheduled in. Please let me know if there are any others that need to be added. Tim

Just to thank everyone who has responded to our survey a couple of weeks ago we spoke with residents on Milton Road about parking problems. If you live on Milton Road and have views on parking them do let us know your views on the survey as we will be taking the responses forward shortly. The online version of the survey in here. The discussion with the Council is about the whole issue of parking near to Bury Old Road and Heaton Park and we are also raising problems on other streets, particularly the Upper Wilton Street area. Just to thank residents who raised the issue of this gate being broken and not in use (again). This was raised with the Council earlier in the week and my understanding is that Council operatives were going to try to straighten the barrier and bolt back in place yesterday or today. They will also arrange for the motorcycle stand to be repaired. Can people please let me know if the problem re-occurs as obviously it is important that the barrier is working. Tim
