Atticus is now forever tarnished for me, as he is for Scout. I can still praise his virtue, but it is now tinged with disappointment.

If you live hereabouts you may have seen a street performer dressed as a silver statue swearing live on East Midlands Today. He told the Leicester Mercury why he did it. Anyway, I saw him by the clock tower yesterday, hanging out on the Hare Krishna people. I hope they will prove a calming influence on him.

Corbyn and the EU

This morning, on the Andrew Marr show, Jeremy Corbyn, leader of Britain's opposition Labour Party, argued that a country had to be a member of the European Union in order to remain part of the European single market. That is, of course, nonsense; Norway is a prime example of a country whose people voted not [...]

Mark Mills was never Kaiser Bill's batman, but he did learn a lot from being Vince Cable's intern. Jeremy Corbyn will never be prime minister. Or so Louis Mian reckons. Anoosh Chakelian reminds us that children's fiction can be political: "Although The Demon Headmaster: Total Control ... is not explicitly political, the effects of successive Tory government education reforms since the last book in 2002 weigh heavy on the plot and pupils." "The 'tough guy' narrative is seductive. It suggests we have control over our fate, that we can will cancer away. These are lies we tell ourselves. And for ...

Ukip no longer has majority control of any local councils after a defection deprived the troubled party of its majority on Thanet District Council: Ukip now holds 27 of 55 seats on Thanet District Council after Beverly Martin joined the Conservative group... Ms Martin said she had decided she could "better serve the residents of Thanet" from the Conservatives. Chris Wells, the Ukip leader on the council, said Ms Martin had "contributed little" since she rejoined the party after a spell as an independent. "Yo Yo Councillor Yo's again," he surmised. The Yo Yo reference is to Martin's past defection ...

Liberal Democrat Newswire #102 takes a look at the new Lib Dem approach to tuition fees in Wales, when Tim Farron decided to resign and more.

I have been trying to get to the bottom of what Labour generally and Jeremy Corbyn and Angela Rayner MP in particular have been saying about this controversial matter. Let's kill one piece of fake news first – Labour brought in Tuition Fees when in government, end of. No they weren't brought in by Nick Clegg, he just made an almighty mess of pledging to fight them before doing his spectacular U-turn and in effect reversing that pledge. So ownership of Tuition Fees belongs to Labour but both Tories and Lib Dems in Government have backed them. Of course the ...

Over the last couple of weeks, I've seen numerous public figures say that there is a high possibility of Jeremy Corbyn leading Labour into government. One of the first posts on Tim Montgomerie's new blog UnHerd was entitled: Get ready for Prime Minister Jeremy Corbyn... and President Sanders... Yesterday the Conservatives' policy chief stated that Corbyn ... Continue reading Why I don't think Corbyn will become Prime Minister

In 2015 and 2016, the Hugo Awards suffered a serious crisis. At nomination stage, several hundred activists collectively voted for slates of candidates proposed by various individuals. The slates completely dominated several categories, and included a number of candidates which were not to the wider taste of fandom, with the result that a record five No Awards were made in 2015 and another two in 2016. A number of reforms were passed in 2015 and ratified in 2016 to make it more difficult for entire ballot categories to be dominated in this way in future. This post is about the ...

The Waddicar part of Melling Parish is looking lovely with Waddicar Lane being bedecked with summer flowers. I represented Melling on Sefton Council for 12 years so still have an attachment to the area. Here's some shots I took today of the work of the Melling in Bloom Volunteers:-

News reports say that Jeremy Corbyn has committed Labour to leaving the single market, in the mistaken belief that membership is tied in with being in the European Community. However, his interpretation of the rules was immediately challenged by one of the main rebels on the EU within the Labour Parliamentary Party: The Labour leader's explanation of his party's Brexit policy was questioned by the former shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna, one of the party's leading advocates of a soft Brexit, who pointed out that several countries including Norway were members of the single market without being full EU members: ...

Another song from the reruns of Top of the Pops. This was a hit in 1984, and sounds much better today than I had remembered. But I still don't believe the Thompson Twins know what it means to work hard on machines.
