In recent years, the hottest place to be on the Saturday night of Liberal Democrat conference has been the Lib Dem Disco.

I seem to photograph the sign to Cravens Arms and Clun every time I visit Bishop's Castle, but if you scout around there are other good ones to be found there.

Like chess prodigies, England spin prospects get younger and younger. A few days ago the Daily Mail, the Daily Telegraph and The Times got excited about 13-year-old Rehan Ahmed. Here is Elizabeth Ammon in The Times: Rehan Ahmed is considered such an outstanding prospect that he has now bowled at England batsmen two years in a row. Ahmed, who is attached to Nottinghamshire and has already played for their under-17s, also helped England's batsmen before the Lord's Test against Pakistan last year, when he bowled Ben Stokes in the nets. Yesterday he was back among the finest Test players in ...

Sean Warren and Stephen Bigger, authors of Living contradiction: A teacher's examination of tension and disruption in schools, in classrooms and in self, argue that positive relationships should be the basis of teaching. The teacher in the title is Sean. English and American schools have for three decades been dominated by behaviourism, discipline and control by rewards and punishments, sanctions or consequences). The paraphernalia of punishments include suites for detention and the construction of booths for internal isolation and exclusion. Sean held a position which organised and oversaw these facilities until he came to understand that the role contradicted his ...

The decision to abandon a comprehensive park and ride service for last weekend's Ludlow Food Festival was bizarre. If you want to put off people coming to Ludlow Food Festival, this was the way to do it. Many people I spoke to complained of how far it was to walk, especially on their way out of town. People with limited mobility struggled with the journey. Those leaving on Saturday and Sunday afternoon were treated to typical Ludlow rainstorms. Depending on their fitness and where they had parked their cars, it would have taken between 20 and 40 minutes to return ...

Federal Conference Committee (FCC) met on Saturday to discuss amendments and other issues for debate in Bournemouth this weekend. As a quick recap, and for those who haven't been to conference before, three things can happen to an amendment: They can be accepted for debate and voted on my conference, they can be drafted in as if they were part of the original motion or they can be rejected. Drafted in amendments should not be controversial or ambiguous in any way, and typically they will update a motion to reflect recent events, or correct or clarify wording. The time for ...

The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of the Queen's coronation. QAVS is an MBE for volunteer groups. Over the last 4 years, the work of the voluntary sector here in Bury has been recognised with 10 organisations across the Borough having been awarded the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. In 2017 that success has been further added to with Volunteers and Staff of the Fusilier Museum being successful in ...

Bury's second 10K run is this Sunday. A number of the borough's roads will be closed or have access restricted and a number of parking suspensions will also be in operation. The run gets under way at 9.30am and the bulk of the closures start at 8.30am, with parking suspensions mostly starting at 7am. Routes will open on a rolling timetable as soon as it is safe to do so. Among the roads affected are Angouleme Way, Bolton Street, Bury Street, Cross Lane, Dumers Lane, Haymarket Street, Manchester Road, Radcliffe Road, Redvales Road, Silver Street, Spring Lane, Tarn Drive and ...

Second paragraph of third chapter: If there is a more driven person in human history than Genghis Khan (about 1162-1227) we should pray we don't bump into him on a dark night. From the makers of the quiz show QI, a collection of biographies of famous people, more or less tied together by themed chapters, very much going for the gosh-wow trivia, none of it all that memorable to be honest. This was my top unread book acquired in 2012. Next in that list is the anthology Brave New Worlds, edited by John Joseph Adams.

Cllr Hands and I were at our monthly surgery in the Redbrick Chapel on Liverpool Rd -as we usually are on the first Saturday of the month -when we were greeted by a women keen for our help. She began: "20 years ago you helped me and now the problem has returned. Can you help me again? Thankfully she was looking at Cllr Hands when she spoke, because I freely admit I could not place her. True to form Richard engaged with the women and after some reminiscing the problem was identified and a plan of action agreed. We've been ...

If you have a particular interest in policy, there are two events that you should definitely put in your Conference diary. The first is the consultative session on the manifesto, 1630 – 1800 Monday in the main auditorium. This is designed to let people have a chance to say what they thought of the manifesto. It's particularly important because if there is another snap election in the not too distant future, then the Federal Policy Committee will have to produce another manifesto without going through the pre-manifesto consultation stage they would normally employ. So it's particularly important for people to ...

Global war followed the descent into dictatorship in parts of Europe in the 1930s. The horrors of WW2, and the dark shadow of communism that fell over east and central Europe and USSR subsequently, led to the consolidation of liberal ideals in the freer world. A reassertion of liberal and democratic ideals and the principle of human rights was expressed in the Oxford Manifesto in 1947 at Wadham College, Oxford and in the creation of Liberal International. It was the first modern declaration of liberal and democratic principles following the defeat of Nazism, principles which contrasted starkly with the totalitarian ...

Tony Blair's Institute for Global Change has issued a paper regarding immigration into Britain, particularly in relation to the UK's membership of the European Union. It is authored by Harvey Redgrave, a very good policy man who used to work in Ed Miliband's office during the coalition years. It is not without merit in some ways. However, I think it was an opportunity wasted, particularly as Blair could have said things that no one else could and taken this debate in a different direction than where it is currently headed. Whichever way you slice it, "EU immigration: examining the evidence ...

I was still living in England at the time of the 1997 election. As the results came through, I nipped upstairs in the sports centre in Chesterfield where I was at the count to watch some results on the telly. There were was one other person in the room, Tony Benn, who was eating a white chocolate Magnum. Anyway, I was quietly blubbing with joy because I knew that this result would mean that we would get a Scottish Parliament. A lot has happened since then. Some of the Lib Dems' finest moments came during their 8 years in coalition ...

Many of us are tending to form the impression that our societies are fraying at the edges. In the UK, people have probably never been so polarised – at least not in recent times. The Brexit vote, the Scottish referendum, the attitude of our current political class – fomenting division rather than unity seems to [...] The post The great Trump, Farage paradox – should we blame ourselves? appeared first on Radix.

Thanks to Lawrence Fullick for filling us in on an anti-Brexit event that 's taking place in Bournemouth to coincide with our Conference. Pro EU organisations are organising events at all 3 party conferences. They will not have to try too hard to persuade people at ours. In fact, they recognise that it's about them showing us that people support our stance. The Pants to Brexit theme could enable us to show off our creative genius. It takes place all afternoon on Sunday so everyone should be able to nip out at some point if they want. From the organisers: ...

I am getting old. Like most old men I have a tendency to be grumpy and claim that things aren't as good as they were in the old days. Please bear this in mind when you read this. I was trained as a Commando officer so I don't know any other means of tackling a challenge than fix bayonets and charge. I don't really do subtlety. Please remember that, too when you read on. I am an enthusiast, and have a tendency to paint in large shapes and bright colours. What follows is Gaugin, not Canaletto. Please make allowance. When ...

"Implementing Brexit: Customs", an analysis from the Institute for Government think tank, has concluded that leaving the EU customs union after Brexit threatens to cost UK firms more than £4bn a year and trigger enormous disruption to trade. They say that Up to 180,000 traders would be hit by pulling out of the EU's free trade area, imposing red tape at borders and that the daunting task of making Britain "ready for day one" requires changes at more than 30 government departments and public bodies, as well as around 100 local authorities. The Independent adds that Calais, Dunkirk, Rotterdam and ...

Word gets around that I sit on the Sefton Rights of Way Liaison Group and I have recently been asked to press Sefton Council to take action to repair the bridge just at the north end of Altcar Rifle Range, close to the Southport – Liverpool railway line where the path emerges from beside the Range and railway into open land before reaching the southern end of Formby at Andrews Lane.
