For Your Consideration.

Picture the scene: It's 2020 and Oscar season is upon us. Film studios, directors and producers are busy touting their wares to the members of the Academy, offering up their prize films to the electorate and soliciting interest - and votes - with adverts, direct mail and parties. Campaigning is in full swing, and you're flattered to be invited to an exclusive screening of the highly rated "The Hat", hosted by the studio chief and followed by a private party with some of Hollywood's finest actors and directors. As costume designer, your part in the making of "The Hat" was ...

This post comes after India Willoughby, media professional and relatively newly minted trans woman, has spent a day and a half on Twitter defending her view that transsexual women are different from trans women. There has been some tortuous logic involved. The argument seems to go something like "transsexual women are those who have or [...]

Announcing the new team, which features two former leaders in the form of Tim Farron and the improbably hip Ming Campbell, current party leader Vince Cable said: I am fortunate to lead such a great, gender-balanced team, which is comprised of the most talented and promising politicians in the House of Commons and battle-hardened, experienced campaigners. The team has a wealth of senior ministerial experience. It also includes the former council leaders of Newcastle and Liverpool, signalling my intention to restore and build on our local government base. In addition to the gender balance that Vince Cable mentions, the team ...

News from Colchester: A founding member of an independent group has joined the Liberal Democrats in a bid become a borough councillor and cut the scale of a proposed new town. Andrea Luxford-Vaughan, a founding member of the Wivenhoe Independents, has joined the party with immediate effect. A member of Wivenhoe Town Council for ten years, Mrs Luxford-Vaughan has led campaigns on subjects such as home-to-school transport, improved train access and curbing excessive housing development. The married mum-of-two – who will join forces with fellow Lib Dem Mark Cory, a member of Colchester Council's ruling cabinet – said: "Winning the ...

Commenting on news that International Trade Secretary Liam Fox's new Board of Trade has only one member, Liam Fox, Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesperson Tom Brake said: "Talk about a job creation scheme."The Secretary of State, no doubt embarrassed by his lack of a real role in Government beyond accumulating millions of air miles, has had to invent a grandiose title for himself. It will convince nobody."The signing of the first trade deals are years away, whereas the damage to our existing largest trade deal, with the EU, is happening now."

Commenting on official apprenticeship levy figures that show a 61% fall in starts, Leader of the Liberal Democrats and former Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Vince Cable said: "As Secretary of State I presided over a huge increase in the quantity and quality of apprenticeships. It was a system that gave millions a chance to develop new skills and find work. The Conservatives are trashing that legacy. "It is damning that this government are giving new apprentices such a poor deal. Hundreds of thousands of people will lose out from the opportunity to enter high skilled work. ...

The Love of Learning

What are we doing to our young people? Testing them until the joy is out of learning and school is just one tick box after another. The head of Ofsted, Amanda Spielman, said The regular taking of test papers does little to increase a child's ability to comprehend. We have completely the wrong approach to learning. We need holistic education for our young people, encompassing the widest range of subjects, building character and instilling the love of learning. This includes the arts. When I was 11, we moved to Missouri. I started at a new junior high school (years 6-7 ...

Second paragraph of third chapter [visiting Medjugorje]: Such has been the impact on the local economy that a cynic might think there's a conspiracy to keep a good story going, and when we're suddenly told that one of the original visionaries is happy to meet and talk I wonder if we're using them or they're using us. This is a book-of-a-TV-programme, made in 2006/7 by Palin as one of his travelogue series, taking in all the former Communist countries of Eastern Europe, plus Turkey, minus most of Russia (represented briefly by Kaliningrad). So Vince Cable reshuffled his top team today. There's a very interesting change of language. No longer are they called the Shadow Cabinet. That probably makes sense for a team of 12 MPs out of 650. They will henceforth be known as spokespeople. So who has the top jobs? A full list is here. The team is gender balanced. In fact there is a majority of women – 15 out of the 29. That includes long time Vince ally Dee Doocey who is coming in with a Spokesperson without Portfolio. This would certainly enable her to obtain a profile over ...

He also said it almost prompted him to resign from the Coalition. According to the TES, he told the event: "I think it's utterly nuts to have.. an early years offer where the children of two investment bankers can get a 30-hour provision and the children from very disadvantaged backgrounds get 15."David Laws also said: "It's ironic that all of the debate in Westminster and ...

I recently suffered a major bereavement, an event that triggered a decline in my health. Ten years as a carer has taught me that there isn't much help out there. That still appears to be the case as I try to cope in a very difficult situation. Bereavement counselling is only available from charities and there is a three-month-long waiting list. The alternative is the NHS run Talking Therapies which takes you through several hoops before you can even get to speak to a professional counsellor! 'Their heads are full of cotton hay and rags', according to Prof Higgins. Walk in any British city or town and see if, as you walk, there are any commemorative works of art. War memorials you will almost certainly see. Royalty you will almost certainly see. Famous men you will almost certainly see. Then, look to see how many women are commemorated. Queen Victoria and the Virgin Mary apart, few places have statuary of real women. The statue of Millicent Fawcett, which will shortly be sited in Parliament Square, is, therefore, highly unusual and hugely significant. Of some 925 commemorative ...

My MP Tracy Brabin (Labour) states in her election literature (I kept a copy) that she would "fight for . . .full access to the single market." (I quote her exactly). Consequently, when she failed to vote vote for Chuka Umunna's single market amendment to the Queen's Speech to achieve just that, and failed to sign an open letter from 40+ Labour stalwarts also demanding the policy she said she would fight for, I asked why? One of the weaknesses of devolved government in Wales is the apparent belief amongst ministers that passing legislation is sufficient to show their commitment to a specific cause without having to follow-through by modifying their behaviour in other ways. The Well-being of Future Generations Act is the best example of this tendency. This legislation was meant to create a framework to force public sector bodies to work in a more sustainable way. These bodies need to make sure that when making their decisions they take into account the impact they could have on people living their lives in Wales in ...

I my view neither should be tolled, old or new bridge. It's time for tolls to be phased out everywhere on the national road network; they are a throwback to the past and have no place in modern society.
