One of my watering holes when I was a student at York was the Railway Mania Bar at the Royal Station Hotel (now called The Principal York for some reason). After a day out on the railways, we would retire there to drink keg Old Peculier. I have never found it being served anywhere else. Years later I stayed at the hotel in the course of my day job. I found that the bar, which was in the basement and reached by external stairs, had long since been converted into a gym. Put it down to privatisation: the Royal York ...

Very sad news as the former Lib Dem MP for Cambridge, Julian Huppert, announces he won't be standing again for the seat: It was an honour to represent my home town as MP & to make a positive difference locally & nationally. However, I will not be standing again — Julian Huppert (@julianhuppert) October 21, 2017

With the A49 and Brand Lane closures, we have about had our fill of road closures in Ludlow this year. But there is one more scheduled closure to come. The top end of Lower Galdeford and Upper Galdeford will be closed from 6 to 16 November during the day to resurface the road surface. There will be temporary traffic lights on the junction of Upper Galdeford, Station Drive and Gravel Hill for one day the week before. This work is essential and has been already delayed to avoid the tourist season. This work was due to take place in August ...

This an audio recording of Professor Stephen Reicher's lecture on the psychology of authoritarian populism that I attended last month. As I blogged when I got home that evening: Professor Reicher's argument that if we are to understand the appeal of Donald Trump (and of other authoritarian populists) we have to get away from the idea that the people who voted for him are merely wicked or stupid. It is worth taking the time to listen to it. His arguments are obviously relevant to winning the debate on Brexit.

Embed from Getty Images Matthew Engel has a magnificent polemic on the state of cricket in today's Guardian: This is not the game that enraptured me when I was six years old. Nor the game I have written about happily for much of my adult life. I don't care about the St Lucia Zouks. And I won't care about whatever names the 12-year‑olds in marketing invent for the new made-up teams when the existing English Twenty20 is engulfed by yet another new competition in the years ahead. This wretched idea was sold to the county chairmen by bribery - an ...

Combinations such as wine and food are often discussed and tuned to maximise pleasure. Less mentioned is the art of combining the right audio book with the right walk.

Cimarron won the Academy Award for Outstanding Production in 1931, beating East Lynne, The Front Page, Skippy and Trader Horn. I haven't seen or heard of any of the others. I have seen City Lights, which was released in the August 1930-July 1931 eligibility window, and is a far far better film. It did not get a single Academy Award nomination. Cimarron was the first film to be nominated in every eligible Oscar category, and won two of the others - Best Writing and Best Art Direction. Here is a recent trailer: Cimarron is the lowest-ranked of any winner of ...

The Owl Prowl at Wapley Bushes Local Nature Reserve, which had to be postponed last Friday due to high winds, has now been rescheduled for Friday 10 November at 7 pm. This Owl Prowl will be led by well-known local expert Ian McGuire. Ian's owl prowls are a night-time walk in woodlands for all the family where you can learn about British owls through his iPad video presentations and through the evening he will be calling wild tawny owls in the hope that one will call back and possibly fly in for everyone to view. Owl prowls are suitable for ...

In Lancaster, California, there's a musical road. When you drive over it, it plays the William Tell Overture. Unfortunately, it's out of tune. Here's why.

In Nick Clegg's latest iNews column, he says that MPs are finally starting to flex some muscle in the Brexit process. He is as bold as to say that he believes Parliament will actually save the country from its fate. Nick's article is important because it gives those who think that our fate is inevitable a clear route map to a better future. He says that if Parliament votes down the deal, the two year Brexit clock will stop ticking: Next October, Brexit Secretary David Davis will present the Government's threadbare Brexit deal to the House of Commons for approval. ...

I used to be a member of the National Trust but left in disgust in 1990 when its ruling council voted to effectively ignore an all-member vote to ban deer hunting on Trust land. As well as stately homes, the National Trust owns thousands of acres of valuable land throughout the UK, including large parts of Gower, where they act as an effective bulwark against those who might want to destroy or undermine it as Britain's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As a leading conservation advocate and a trustee of our natural heritage, the National Trust in my view ...

Further to the notice I mentioned last week about works on Polepark Road from Monday coming (23rd October), Scottish Water has now advised as follows : Polepark Road Sewer Works : Please note that this work is completely separate from the current ongoing water network works taking place in Blackness Road. The work in Polepark Road is to carry out an essential sewer repair to a blocked section of sewer in Polepark Road just to the North of Bissells Bar. The nature and location of the work means that a localised road closure is required during the works. The closure ...

Norman Lamb MP is well known these days for his tireless work in trying to ensure that mental health services are at least on a par with physical health services in the NHS. But Norman has wider health related interests too. He serves as the Lib Dem Health Spokesperson and as a chair of the Science and Technology Select Committee in Westminster. Last Wednesday Norman was in Liverpool for a tour around the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as part of his overall health portfolio. After his tour he met some local people with an interest in his campaigning and ...

Ludlow constituency is set to see major changes if proposals put forward by the Boundaries Commission are adopted by parliament. Nearly 8,000 people will be moved into the constituency from north Herefordshire and it will be renamed Leominster and Ludlow. Bridgnorth will join the Wrekin and Wellington. There are small expansions to Telford and Shrewsbury constituencies, while North Shropshire remains unchanged under the proposals. The proposals Click for larger image Ludlow will see major changes. It will lose Bridgnorth, though will now keep Much Wenlock. The south boundary will be extended south nearly as far as Hereford, bringing north Herefordshire ...
