Embed from Getty Images Today's Guardian has an article by Simon Parkin about comedy double acts and how they break up. Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Lee and Herring. Newman and Baddiel. They are all there. I was reminded of an old column by Alexei Sayle, where he discussed the same subject. It dates from 2005, and it contains an observation on the politics of the day so penetrating that I remember it today. For Sayle wrote: In trying to fathom the personal dynamic that exists between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, it occurs to me that the closest show ...

Well, it's created a lot of uncertainty, for a regulation that spans just 50 pages (and 30 of preamble). But it's not very accessible, because it's hard to find an indexed version. Well, if you want one of those, here it is. In May, the EU's General Data Protection Regulations comes into force. The EU bill is only 86 pages, and there's a PDF published at eur-lex.europa.eu (oh, awesome, the

Holocaust Memorial Day

An extract from Primo Levi's If This is a Man. (from pages 165/6 Abacus edition, 2103) The prisoners are marched onto the parade ground to witness an execution. When all the Kommandos had returned, the band suddenly stopped and a raucous voice ordered silence. Another voice rose up in the sudden quiet and spoke for a long time into the dark and hostile air. Finally the condemned man was brought out into the blaze of the searchlight . All this pomp and ruthless ceremony are not new to us. I have already witnessed thirteen hangings since I entered the camp; ...

Some time this year, Irish voters will have a chance to repeal Article 40.3.3° of the Irish Constitution, inserted by referendum in 1983. It reads: The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right. This embedded a ban on abortion into the Irish constitution. Many on both sides of the debate, including the Catholic Church, assert that this ban is in line with traditional Christian teaching, ...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-42802041 The BBC has the story on its web site – see link above Now what exactly was Steve Rotherham's electoral pledge on Mersey Tunnels Tolls? Well I have listened carefully to the video on the Liverpool Echo web site from January 2017 and the pledge was very clear to me – Mr. Rotherham said he was going to reduce the cost of a single (Fast Tag) journey, for Liverpool City Region residents, through the tunnels to £1. No mention of it being only between 7pm at night and 7pm in the morning. Here's the link to the Liverpool Echo ...

The LGBT+ Lib Dems are holding their Winter Strategy Conference today in London. Vince sent them a message of support in which he outlined the party's proud record of supporting LGBT rights from opposing Section 28, supporting the equalising of the age of consent right through to achieving same sex marriage and, currently, support for changes to the Gender Recognition Act. He specifically mentioned the climate of transphobia at the moment. The nice people who made the video have kindly said that we can show it too so, enjoy: Earlier this week, I wrote about how well transgender and feminist ...

Reports in the Mirror that the Ministry of Justice has refused to publish an independent review it commissioned into prison maintenance early last year, millions of pounds of which was outsourced to Carillion, has underlined once more how unaccountable and opaque outsourcing contracts are. The paper says that the review was carried out after prisons minister Sam Gyimah said he was "not impressed" by Carillion's maintenance work in September 2016 and the firm was sent a formal warning. Despite that row, the firm went on to win another £40million in Ministry of Justice contracts in 2017, before collapsing leaving 20,000 ...

The first major stage of the EU (Withdrawal) Bill will reach the House of Lords next week. I thought this would a good time to explain what the next few weeks will look like in this often ignored corner of Westminster. Second Reading The Second Reading of the EU Withdrawal Bill will take place early next week. This is a chance for peers to discuss the issues in the Bill and the processes that the Bill, if passed, would enable - namely, the transcribing of EU law into UK law. Particularly in the aftermath of a general election, you hear lots of Liberal Democrats saying that the party needs to more radical or more distinctive. Or, as this views are often played out on the internet these days, MORE RADICAL!!! The problem is what often comes next: the favourite policy idea of the person making this call. (A policy, which by lucky chance, is the policy they've always thought was a good idea even well before the election result.) Often in the past that policy has been the decriminalisation of cannabis, although other policies across political reform, housing and taxation ...

I'll start by saying that if was simply up to me, I'd keep Britain in the EU. I was a Remainer before the referendum result, and nothing has convinced me since that leaving the EU would make the country better off. However, I also remain against the idea of a second referendum on the question. Here's why. First off, the campaign be would much, much nastier than the first one, and given that one featured Nigel Farage in front of a billboard containing refugees that had a caption that read "Breaking Point", that is truly saying something. Having been through ...

The government must urgently spell out its aims from the second phase of EU negotiations and on transitional arrangements, the Lords EU Financial Affairs Sub-Committee has warned. The committee has warned of market fragmentation and financial instability if the UK loses access to the EU through no deal, particularly damaging Britain's financial services industry. Goldman Sachs boss Lloyd Blankfein, for example, warned this week that it is reaching a point in contingency planning where it will be too late to stop the group from leaving the UK. Responding, Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable said: "This is a serious warning from ...

Vince Cable has issued the following statement to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to honour the memories of the millions who lost their lives to Nazi persecution during one of the darkest and most horrific periods in human history. It was a time of unparalleled hate and inhumanity, the lessons from which we must never forget. Sadly, the horrors of genocide did not end in 1945. Time after time since we have witnessed acts of shocking depravity and persecution across many parts of the world. We use today to remember the victims of these subsequent ...
