The Government's refusal to grant a licence for the medicinal use of cannabis to 6 year old Alfie Dingley has been in the news this week. His mother says that when he was given the drug in the Netherlands, under the supervision of paediatricians there, his Epilepsy improved. Ed Davey called on the Government to look at the evidence and listening to those who know what they are talking about. The government's refusal to consider allowing the use of cannabis for medicinal purpose is criminalising people who simply need to alleviate chronic pain. A growing number of our European neighbours ...

BSFA Best Artwork 2017

I may not know much about art, but I know what I like; and I found it fairly easy to rank the six shortlisted artworks for this year's BSFA Awards. My top three and bottom two were all very close, though. My first preference goes to Geneva Benton - Sundown Towns (cover for Fiyah Magazine #3). Incidentally it is the only one of the six which features a person looking directly at the viewer. There's a lot going on here with strong, memorable use of colours. Second preference to Galen Dara - Illustration for 'These Constellations Will Be Yours' by ...

Remembering the SDP

[IMG: SDP logo] The events that led to the formation of the SDP were also formative years for me as a very young man becoming fascinated with politics. I can recall Roy Jenkins giving the Dimbleby Lecture and the Labour party conference of 1980 when the left won every vote on key issues such as Europe and Defence. Then the elevation of Michael Foot to the post of leader an election in which many had thought the moderate candidate Denis Healey would triumph. James Callaghan had timed his resignation so that MPs would elect his successor before a conference arranged ...

Knock, Knock! Door opens... "Hello Mr Smith, my name is Tahir. We are out today ..." Mr Smith: Let me ask you a question. A Labour guy and the Tory bloke came last week and promised the same things. What is it that makes you Lib Dems different or more caring and able to deliver this for me as compared to them?" Tahir: "Mmm..." A simple question that is not easy to answer for a resident. I often wonder what is our local government raison d'être that differentiates us and gives us resident voting loyalty, other than hard work on ...

The "Corbyn consulted with Commie spy" story has run across pretty much every newspaper you would consider right of centre in Great Britain now. It is clearly part of a concerted effort to change people's minds about the Labour leader. If they can't get to the young lefties who would never read The Daily Mail in a million years, at least they might change a few minds within the 30-45 year old range of people who probably represent the current swing vote. Property owning, Remainer types whom the custodians of papers like The Sun hope could be suitably repelled by ...

Yesterday, Layla Moran talked to Julia Hartley-Brewer about that difficult issue of tuition fees. Referring to the Lib Dem nightmare on the subject, she said that it was horrible and that she had almost left the party over the failure of our MPs to keep the pledge not to vote for any increase in tuition fees that they had signed during the 2010 election. Looking to the future, Layla spoke of the importance of maintenance grants for poorer students in improving social mobility. You can listen to her whole interview on the Talk Radio website here. She added that the ...

Britain's Labour Party is neck-and-neck with the Conservatives in opinion polls. Surely, many claim, this means that Labour are in trouble, and its leadership is woefully complacent? The Tories are in an utter mess, the argument goes, so if Labour aren't streets ahead now they never will be. I'm not so sure. The first part ... The status of the border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic has been a major headache for UK Ministers as they seek to inexpertly navigate the storm surrounding our exit from the EU. The danger is that by putting back border controls and disrupting free trade between the two, Ministers will start to unpick twenty years of peace founded on the principles of direct rule and power-sharing as set out in the Good Friday agreement. They need not fear, however, as the hard line Brexiteers have the solution. They want to ditch the Good Friday agreement altogether and apparently, ...

Evan tabled Early Day Motion 117 and questioned the Attorney General to raise the plight of these men in Parliament. A new exhibition inspired by Victoria Wood marks the beginning of a year of 'Happy' events at Bury Art Museum. Simply titled "Happy", the display showcases contemporary and historical artworks designed to make you happy, make you question whether you are happy and question what it is to be happy anyway. It will include a piece called 'Dustbin Lid Kids' by Graham Ibbeson, who is completing his designs for the memorial sculpture of Victoria Wood in Bury town centre. The theme is inspired by a neon artwork that the BBC commissioned Victoria Wood to do, the word 'Happy' in her ...
