My 2nd vlog, filmed on Tuesday 27th February. The Beast from the East had arrived so the day was dominated with tackling snow problems - from feeding the goats in the morning to driving past road collisions in the evening.

One of the most astonishing things about the last few days is how willing Brexiteers have been to jeopardise decades of peace in Northern Ireland. Most of them are old enough to go better. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and remember the turmoil. I had relatives who missed being blown up by a matter of minutes. The loss of life and violence and uncertainty was horrendous and that time should not be easily or lightly forgotten. But it's not just that part of the UK that's heading for constitutional issues because of Brexit. The failure of the ...

So, John Major is the latest figure to suggest that a referendum on the Brexit deal might not be a bad idea. While he did not enjoy being "out of step" with his party, the stakes were so high than he felt obliged to speak out at such a crucial moment in the negotiations. "Leaving Europe is an issue so far-reaching, so permanent, so over-arching that it will have an impact on all our lives – most especially on the young and the future," he said. "With only 12 months to go, we need answers, not aspirations." While he was ...

Being a good, local MP, a pressing constituency issue, of course, concerning the airport in her area which has just launched a consultation on noise. Here she is in action: And here is the text: Edinburgh airport recently launched a noise abatement consultation. Given that aviation is a reserved matter, will the Prime Minister agree that her Government undertake an investigation of whether the level of night flights at Edinburgh has reached the level that was reached at Stansted when it was regulated? She actually managed to get a straight answer from the PM, too. I was not aware of ...

Today the Answers given to some of the Prime Minister's Questions did not seem to be logical however they do cast some idea of the shape that Brexit will take. Basically Jeremy Corbyn, Ian Blackford, David Simpson, Michael Tomlinson Gregory Campbell, Kenneth Clarke and Simon Hoare asked her in various forms about Northern Ireland, Brexit and the Good Friday Agreement. From the answers we received today we have learnt the following: She is committed to the Good Friday AgreementShe is committed to devolution in all parts of the UKShe does not want to see a hard border on the island ...

Every year the House of Commons spends 3 days debating Government Department's estimates for public spending. Up until now, a committee of select committee chairs decides what subjects to debate, but it was different this year: MPs are considering @mhclg spending on homelessness. The subject of this debate was requested by @LaylaMoran #EstimatesDay https://t.co/Q2Hq6hYMol pic.twitter.com/SmU0PLC8U0 — UK House of Commons (@HouseofCommons) February 27, 2018 Layla Moran led the section on homelessness. She expressed disbelief that funding to tackle this was being cut when the supply of housing was going down and homelessness was rising due to Universal Credit. She highlighted ...

So, once the fanfare of Corbyn's announcement on a customs union died down, we were able to see the details of the deal he wants to strike with the EU. One telling statement made it clear right from the start that this was a policy designed to fail. Corbyn demanded that even though the UK is leaving the EU, the UK should still have a say on the trade deals the EU strikes with other nations. This

I am delighted today that the Welsh Government is launching a 'rent to own' scheme conceived, promoted and designed by the Welsh Liberal Democrats that will help young people, who can afford a market rent but do not have enough money for a deposit, get onto the home ownership ladder. Details of the scheme can be seen here. This has been made possible due to the agreement between the Welsh First Minister and the Welsh Liberal Democrats Education Secretary, Kirsty Williams, when she entered government. That agreement also contained a commitment to build 20,000 affordable homes in Wales between 2016 ...

All trains in and out of Ludlow are cancelled this morning and the service may not resume today. This sudden interruption of services is due to wheel damage to a train(s) and the need for safety checks on Arriva's fleet of Class 175 trains. A replacement bus service has just begun operating (c. 9.00am). The best advice is not to travel unless you really must. Safety is clearly an overriding concern. But there are questions that Arriva needs to answer about this disruption to Shropshire services. Arriva say on Twitter that damage to has forced immediate inspections of its entire ...

Our Lib Dem Peer and regular LDV contributor William Wallace is an Emeritus Professor in International Relations. He is more qualified than most people to comment on foreign policy. In the Lords debate on the EU Withdrawal on Monday, he was incredibly critical about the Foreign Secretary – and that was before Boris's bizarre comparison of the congestion charge boundary to the Irish border after Brexit. I could do with a bit of help here to nail down whether the miniature steam loco below, which I understand to have been named 'George the Fifth', is in fact one that originally came from the Lakeside Miniature Railway. I photographed it at Steam Town Carnforth around 1983 and have recently been trying to track down what happened to it. In doing so I found a reference to it potentially being a former Lakeside Miniature Railway loco from Southport prior to it being at Carnforth. If, and its a big if, I have this right the loco is now ...

The political Right has always had a rather narrow interpretation of 'pro-business'. It has interpreted it as deregulation and the euphemism of 'flexible Labour markets.' Brexit has changed all of that. The Labour Party has now come out in favour of remaining in a customs union with the EU. Jeremy Corbyn has also made clear [...] The post Have the Conservatives forgotten how to be pro-business? appeared first on Radix.
