Very funny (and a great example of how much the straight man adds to the comedy duo - see how much less funny the video is if you cover up the left hand side of the screen).

Taken in 1927, the photograph shows Leicester Power Station. Leicester City's King Power Stadium now occupies the site. You can also see the Filbert Street stadium where City used to play and the Aylestone Road ground where Leicestershire Country Cricket Club used to play. The bridge over the river carries the line to Coalville, Ashby and Burton upon Trent, which is still open to freight. The sidings and wagons belong to the vanished Great Central main line.

Research released today has shown the shift in opinion in Northern Ireland since the Brexit referendum. Since the vote when 56% of the people voted to remain in the EU that figure has risen to 69%. However, the research by Queen's University also shows that 61% of the population of Northern Ireland also favour the whole of the UK staying in the Customs Union and Single Market. The population of Northern Ireland who voted to remain in the EU see that as part of the Brexit that helps keep NI economically active, viable and progressing. While 59% of people in ...

It's easy to assume the upcoming vote on abortion in Ireland is a black and white issue. A straight decision between the rights of an unwanted, unborn child versus the rights of a woman who doesn't want to be pregnant. Actually, it's much more complicated than that. Let me tell you my story, as the nearly mum of a much wanted baby. I've never had morning sickness so it's really only if I'm overdue, very short tempered, very hungry and along with that little blue line that I know I'm pregnant. At 12 weeks, I went to the hospital for ...

Commenting on Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson's announcement that he is considering British participation in an alternative satellite-navigation system to the EU's Galileo programme, Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson Baroness Randerson said:"Our omission from Galileo is a shocking reminder of the damaging impact that Brexit is having on our economy. All the while the Government are proposing to waste billions on a British sat-nav system. "We have already seen losses of high-skilled, well-paid jobs that are crucially important to our national security. "Talk of replacing it with our own version, in cahoots with the country furthest away from the UK is frankly ...

Commenting on the Foreign Affairs committee report, Moscow's Gold: Russian Corruption in the UK, which claims London is a "laundromat" for Russian "dirty money", Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable said:"It is now more than two months since I challenged the Prime Minister to impose tougher sanctions on Russian oligarchs close to the Putin regime, including the use of unexplained wealth orders. But, since their introduction at the end of January, these orders appear to have only been used against peripheral figures from other countries, when the situation with Russia is both so pressing and hostile. "These oligarchs, who own so ...

A Very British Scandal

I watched the first episode of Stephen Frears' three-part TV bio-pic about the Thorpe Affair, A Very British Scandal, with a degree of trepidation. Despite the director's esteemed back catalogue and the stellar cast, could it be anything else but a travesty of the truth? I knew Jeremy Thorpe from the time he came to speak [...]

Responding to reports that jailed British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is facing a new charge against her in Iran, Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran said: "No one should be separated from their family like this. It is heart-breaking."Given that the Foreign Secretary has proven himself unable to help, the Prime Minister should make bringing Nazanin home to her family a personal priority."

Click on the photo to above to enlarge it Fracking is a hugely controversial environmental issue. What's more its happening on Sefton Borough's doorstep and this proposed relaxation of planning rules is clearly aimed at smoothing the process of getting it started across the UK. Of course Fracking is also a vision of the past because its a fossil fuel and not sustainable energy. The more we use fossil fuels the faster we accelerate global warming and make the lives of future generations more difficult. But of course we all know all this so the big issue here was to ...

A new think tank called Onwards will launch itself this evening. It's a specifically Tory think tank, but I warmly welcome it. They clearly want to push the Conservative Party back towards a more classically liberal direction of travel, away from the "citizens of nowhere" shtick that has marred May's premiership, and I'm all for that. Basically, if we're going to live in a world where the Tories are likely to have power so long as Mr Grumpy Socialist is the only viable electoral alternative, then I'd prefer the good Tories to win out. Will Tanner, the director of the ...

Now I fully accept that, for many of our readers, the idea of Parish Councils is all a bit redolent of "The Vicar of Dibley" (albeit the cause of confusion between Parish Councils and Parochial Church Councils), but they can be a key element of rural campaigning. I ought to declare an interest first, in that I'm a Parish councillor in mid-Suffolk, and have been for about six years. Mine is a small Parish, population about 270, with an annual precept of less than £6,000. But this tier of local government is widely varied, ranging from the likes of Hereford ...

With future of the Swansea lagoon still in doubt, it is interesting to read in the Independent yesterday that the withdrawal of government support and confusion around future investments have led to a "dramatic and worrying collapse" in green investment. This is a complete reversal of the very positive investment in renewables and green technology started under the Liberal Democrats in the coalition government. It is yet more evidence of the Tories reverting to type once they cease to be moderated by a more radical party with a real commitment to the environment and to tackling climate change. The paper ...

With just 28 days to go before the planned opening of Maghull's 2nd railway station (Maghull North) there still seems to be much to do. These two photos were taken on 20th May:- The top photo shows the station building and the bottom one the present state of the car park. It is now pretty obvious that the station could never have been ready for the original 20th May opening date and I think it fair to say that most folk thought that date was just a little too optimistic anyway. We were told that the delay was due to ...

The idea of devolving power to the "lowest possible level" is about as unifying an idea as there is for Liberal Democrats. But, as often happens with the best ideas of politicians, the current system of devolution to the regions is failing spectacularly. This is because politicians, across both old parties, who become mayors, when they fail to deliver an improvement, have the get out clause of claiming its all the fault of central government for not funding them properly. The latest example of this trend is the recent declaration by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, that the blame for ...

Research by Queen's University Belfast shows that 61% of people in Northern Ireland want the UK as a whole to stay in the Single Market and the Customs Union. This comes amid concern that North-South border checks could be imposed as a result of Brexit. The research also found that if there was a referendum on EU membership today, 69% of Northern Irish people would vote to remain against 56% at the time of the poll in 2016. Responding, Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesperson Tom Brake said: "This research shows there are deep fears in Northern Ireland that this messy, ill-conceived ...
