Backwatersman, who lives across the road from me, is an advertisement for specialising in blogging and for concentrating on quality rather than quantity. Those are two lessons that I have always declined to learn. His latest post follows Leicestershire's unsuccessful Royal London One-day Cup campaign. One of these 50-over games was played, not in Leicestershire, but in Rutland: The fixture at Oakham School should have been another, perhaps more adult, kind of fun. Leicestershire last played there ten years ago, but I remember it as a regular fixture in the calendar. My memories of it include Stuart Broad, making his ...

Masha Gessen on the life, death and resurrection of Arkady Babchenko. "Why is there so little electrification? Why does it take an hour to travel the 45 miles between Manchester and Leeds?" Northern rail passengers are right to be angry at London ministers for abandoning them, says Ben Chu.* "I was 35, I was older and wiser but I thought they were great. I thought they were terrific because they never stopped talking and I liked that. I love exchanging ideas and having arguments." Joan Bakewell remembers the Sixties and the decade's student activists. Marc Mulholland offers a list of ...

Second paragraph of third story ("Perspectives: Tribal Reservations", by Philip Purser-Hallard): Another body had jostled him [Parasiel] in the press-and-heave, spilling his pint. I was not so impressed with Something Changed, the last collection of Bernice Summerfield stories I reviewed, but this is much better. Gender balance is marginally improved (two out of twenty-three stories by women, as opposed to none out of fifteen in Something Changed). Also, the stories seem to gel together much better, with a linking theme the visit of the mysterious alien Quire to the Braxiatel collection in the continuing absence of Braxiatel himself. They are ...

We live in divided times. At the recent CAMSS UK[1] conference in London, we presented our research thoughts on Digital Society, the survey we conducted on Digital Inclusion at the end of 2017. We asked the room: "On a scale of utopian to dystopian, how do you feel about the impact that digital is making [...] The post Towards a kind of corporate digital responsibility appeared first on Radix.

To most of us who are not economists or in government, it is regarded as common sense that we need manufacturing and other producing businesses to pay for public services. The financial sector, which includes insurance, pensions, accountancy and retail banking is a valuable part of the UK economy. However, there are serious concerns that the casino banking sector is extracting rather than producing wealth, and that it is harming rather than benefiting the economy. One of the concerns relates to the huge level of merger and acquisition (M&A) activity, which means that UK companies can easily be taken over ...

Currently, the UK ranks 3rd in the world for the scientific research behind the USA and China. For the period 2007/13, the UK received €8.8 billion out of a total of €107 billion expenditure on research, development and innovation. In the same period over 3,000 UK-based researchers received funding to work overseas (mainly in Germany and Italy). EU's flagship research and innovation programme are Horizon 2020. Since 2014 we have received about €3.6 billion in new grants, and over 10 per cent of research income for top UK's university comes from the EU. By leaving the collaborative research community in ...

On Tuesday the 12th of June, all 15 amendments the Lords made to the EU Withdrawal Bill return to the House of Commons – with only one day given over to debate and the relevant votes. While it is clear this represents a certain amount of desperation on the part of Theresa May, it is also true that the whole episode presents a notable challenge for Jeremy Corbyn as well. Namely, how does he keep a relatively hard Brexit on track without it seemingly like he's doing so overtly, thus possibly annoying a large contingent of his fan base? In ...

A cross-party Early Day Motion (EDM1169) currently in the House of Commons deals with the imminent demolition by the Israeli military of a whole Palestinian Bedouin village, Al Khan Al-Ahmar, in the Occupied Territories. This raises broader concerns over aspects of the current Israeli Government's policy on Israeli 'settlers' in the West Bank. So far only Tom Brake MP and Norman Lamb MP among the Lib Dems have signed this EDM, which to date has enjoyed the insufficient publicity. I wish to bring this EDM to the attention of our MPs with the aim of having more Lib Dem MPs ...

If we were to hold national Brexit awards it would be a close call as to which political party would win the 'meaningless fudge of the year' prize. On the one hand we have the Tories, who appear to be stumbling from misunderstanding, to split to Walter Mitty schemes, and onto a hard exit without once being able to sit down with EU negotiators armed with any clear objectives or any idea how they are going to get to their declared final destination. On the other hand, we have Labour who are determined to talk a good game of saving ...

Three Liberal Democrat MPs took part in yesterday's Commons debate on giving women in Northern Ireland access to legal and safe abortions without having to travel. The recent vote to repeal the 8th amendment to the Irish constitution, paving the way for legislation allowing abortion up to 12 weeks in Ireland and the provisions of the 1967 Act in the rest of the UK. The issue has been devolved to the Northern Ireland assembly since 2003, but that Assembly is not currently sitting. The Irish referendum and a UN report from earlier this year which stated that: the situation in ...

Liberal Democrat Work and Pensions Spokesman, Stephen Lloyd, has branded Tory Government plans to extend contracts for Atos and Capita as "appalling". He said: "Profit should never be a consideration when determining the safety net for the most vulnerable. "It is appalling that this Conservative Government sees fit to reward these companies by extending their contracts despite their shocking performance figures and outcomes."Both the Work Capability Assessment and PIP tests should be taken out of the hands of the corporate behemoths such as Atos and Capita immediately."

Firstly, Andrew Wiseman stepping down as Chair of Federal Conference Committee (FCC) and Geoff Payne's subsequent election as his replacement left a vacancy for one of two Vice Chair slots on the committee. As has been reported previously on LibDemVoice, Nick da Costa won the subsequent election and joined me as Vice Chair. Andrew's departure from the committee also left a vacancy for an ordinary member and based on a recount of the original election result we can now welcome Jon Ball back on to FCC. FCC then had the chance to question a representative of Your Liberal Britain about ...

A Mersey Docks & Harbour Board 'Pug' steam engine in OO scale. Liverpool is famous the world over for many things and it celebrates the vast majority of them but one thing that seems to be all but ignored is the huge network of railways which once served the ports of Liverpool and indeed Birkenhead. The other day, quite by chance, I came across this link (see below) to Bristol Museums:- www.bristolmuseums.org.uk/m-shed/whats-on/train-rides/ Clearly in Bristol its port railways are being celebrated with a real railway run by the local museum. Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable has challenged Transport Secretary Chris Grayling to allow the Conservatives a free vote over the expansion of Heathrow. Grayling fudged his response to Vince's challenge*, which occurred in yesterday's Commons session following the Minister's statement on the subject. The fudge suggested that the Conservatives will try to impose a three-line whip on an issue that badly divides his party. This would open up huge divisions in the Cabinet. It has been reported that Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson will be 'conveniently abroad' at the time of the vote so that he will not be available to ...
