Wilson T. Bell relates the dreadful history of children in concentration camps. "The Soviet Union's system of camps that reached their peak during Joseph Stalin's rule from the 1930s to the 1950s also reveals the destruction of families. While mass arrests broke up the family, and children of "enemies of the people" were separated from their parents, there were also many children in the Gulag itself." The Central Railway scheme of the 1990s was a proposal for a line that would run through the spine of England to the Channel Tunnel. It was in part a more economic anticipation of ...

Path of Blood *****

Following the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, most of the world media's Middle East focus was on what transpired in that benighted country. But from 2003 to 2009 another story was unfolding, in Saudi Arabia, though not much was reported about it in the West, partly because foreign journalists did not have easy access [...]

I've written about lessons in cross-party cooperation in 6 ways to make cross-party political deals work and The Cook-Maclennan talks: lessons in cross-party cooperation and Lessons from history on Labour / Lib Dem cooperation: Kier Hardie and Ramsay MacDonald. It was also the subject of Duncan Brack's chapter in The Alternative: towards a new progressive politics, kindly reproduced here with the permission of the author and editors. You can also read Tim Farron's chapter from the same book, about immigration, in an earlier edition of Liberal Democrat Newswire. So the Scottish and Northern Irish schools have broken up and people are starting to head for the sun. Although, to be honest, they might as well have stayed at home this year. I'll bet you by the time I head to the Highlands at the end of August, the weather will have well and truly broken. Anyway, I digress. Anyone heading on a package holiday will have greater rights today. This is not because of anything that the Tories have done, although they show they have the brassiest neck in the history of the universe by claiming credit for ...

For the past 15 years I have been a Liberal Democrat activist. I've been a local Party Secretary and Chair, fought local, Scottish, Westminster and European elections (and various referendums) as a campaigner and candidate, most recently as a Highland Councillor and Parliamentary candidate for Ross, Skye & Lochaber. Following last years election I took some time out to reappraise my goals. There are a lot of areas for concern in the world but the question was where can I make a difference and what am I passionate about. I concluded that I'm passionate about making things better in my ...

View Poll: World Cup, Second Round, Day Four You should be able to vote using your Facebook or Twitter account, even if you aren't on Livejournal. Well, yesterday was dramatic, wasn't it? Most of us expected Croatia to beat Denmark (probably a bit more easily); only coughingbear combined that with predicting a Russia win as well.

Canada Day 2018

[IMG: Tim Prater at Canada Day 2018] Tim Prater was delighted to represent Sandgate Parish Council on Friday 29th June at Shorncliffe Cemetery at the annual Canada Day ceremony. As Deputy Chair of Sandgate Parish Council, Tim joined the main parade and laid a wreath on behalf of the Parish at the main memorial. The Canada Day Service was first held in 1919 and commemorates the 296 Canadian soldiers who died during WWI and are buried in the Shorncliffe Military Cemetery. It is marked each year by a service and the attendance of local school children laying their own floral ...

Expounding my views on economics can be a lonely business. Though they are based on nothing more than conventional economic theory, few commentators even acknowledge the line of thought. Not long ago the FT columnist Martin Wolf wrote an article on a favourite topic of mine, the productivity "puzzle", which went through a series of ... Quick Update

Having had a couple of messages from people asking if I'm OK because I haven't blogged in a while: I'm still here! Just completely lacking in brain bandwidth for a variety of reasons. Hopefully things should get better this week. You're all lovely people. [IMG: comment count unavailable] comments

As I write this, I haven't seen my wife for six months. We have been kept apart unlawfully, me here in the UK and her stranded in South Korea, following a Home Office error which saw her denied entry into the UK for ten years. Theresa May's 'hostile environment' immigration policy in action. Our story is a simple one; I moved to Korea to teach English in 2013, I met Seulgi there where she worked as a bar manager, and we fell in love. I proposed on a cloudy mountaintop in 2017 and we immediately made plans to start a ...

Upton Station The Railway Gazette has the story on its web site – see link above What made me wonder about this piece of news was more what it did not say than what it did. Has it not been the long-term ambition of Merseytravel to bring the Mid Wirral Line into the Merseyrail fold? Yes it has and it has been talked about in Merseytravel for as long as I can remember. So does this announcement mean that aim has been dropped, forgotten, sidelined, shunted into the sidings? I hope not as it has always been a rather ...

It is surprising, and not always pleasurably so, to find yourself damn right in one of your predictions. Perhaps there is something a little contrarian about that - I predicted it, after all, so it should not come as a surprise. Options to Remain

An option to remain in the EU is an essential part of any people's vote. But should it be just one option? That immediately creates a disadvantage compared to the Brexiters, who habitually have at least two options on the table - for example, a negotiated settlement or leaving with no deal. On the surface of it, a 3-way vote might seem workable: Remain in the EU Accent the negotiated settlement Leave with no deal Indeed, some might argue this would favour Remain, since the Leave vote would be split. If the alterative voting system were employed, whereby voters for ...

I'll be honest, I'm struggling today. Despite being half-Indian, I really rather prefer temperatures in the lower twenties Celsius. But as the burning sun beats down on most of us, Liberal Democrat Voice does not rest. As the Government staggers from one attack from within to the next, and as senior Ministers overtly start their campaigns to replace Theresa May, what are Liberal Democrats to do? We've got a contribution which offers an interesting perspective on that from James Porter. If there is a people's vote, what should we want to see on the ballot paper? John King has been ...
