Take a look at the first few seconds of this video. That's not Imran Khan, who was a right-arm bowler, but Wasim Akram. I suppose all seam bowlers look alike to the bright young things at Newsnight. Later. Newsnight have deleted their tweet, but here is a still from the video it contained.

Summer Introspection

[IMG: Summer Introspection] Something happened about three weeks ago which has triggered a level of depression within me that I have not experienced in some time. Without going into details so as to bore my readers it is... The post Summer Introspection appeared first on FeministMama @ambitiousmamas.

ITV reports: Peterborough MP Fiona Onasanya has been charged with perverting the course of justice, it has emerged. The 34-year-old Labour MP, who won her seat at the General Election in 2017, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on July 12. Court records show she was charged over allegedly lying about who was behind the wheel of a speeding vehicle. This is, alas, a topic that Liberal Democrats are more familiar with than we might wish. If legal action is followed through and if a conviction results – two very important caveats – then a by-election may occur. In 2016, the ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:'A croc wrestler? Never!' snorted the Doctor in disbelief.A rather odd little book from 1982, featuring the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan, woefully characterised and going on an exciting educational journey to learn about extinct animals and early humans. (Why Nyssa should have any interest in some other planet's prehistory or paleontology is not addressed.) The dinosaurs of the title occupy only the first eight pages of ninety or so. The author also wrote one of the less impressive of the 1985/6 game books. There are illustrations by Rowan Barnes-Murphy. She has gone on to better ...

Yes I know I am in some ways comparing chalk and cheese size-wise but I've seen live music at both venues in the past few weeks and Playhouse2 knocks spots off my Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall experience. I blogged about the live music I 'endured' at the Phil' a while back and here's a link to that posting:- I suppose you could say that the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is a medium sized venue for music these days, certainly nowhere near as large as the arena venues that have sprung up in recent times. My guess though is that the Phil' ...

Last night I did one of my occasional slots on the one-and-a-half hour (Bangladeshi) Channel S TV current affairs show, Let's Talk. It was sweltering in the studio — the air conditioning was too noisy to be left on during live transmission — and all three of us (me, the host and another studio guest) [...]

Well done everyone. Today, we got concessions on proposed car parking charges. We got movement on key issues. But it's a score draw - two all. This follows a year of campaigning by traders, councillors and residents. Plans to charge for on-street parking in the town centre after 6pm have been abandoned. Traders will be allowed to park their vans in Castle Street rather than having to take them to Smithfield to the Linney. Two goals up to us. On-street charges will soar up in the town centre Red Zone. The free pop and shop period will be all but ...

How does Theresa May (or, in the case of a sudden government collapse, a successor) get Parliament to vote for a Brexit deal? Attempting to negotiate a compromise between the conflicting camps in Parliament has run into the sand. The alternative? Fear. It would be a classic negotiating play: let the clock run down as far as possible and then where everyone is up close against the deadline give them the choice between a compromise they might not really like... or the nightmare alternative of everything falling apart. This is why so many negotiations run up against the fear of ...

Embed from Getty Images It's not fashionable but I'm willing to put in a good word for Theresa May. Albeit unnecessarily and misguidedly, she has worked very patiently to stitch together some sort of tenuous British cabinet negotiating position for Brexit. You have to admire her patience. I was also impressed but some of her words when she announced the Chequers deal to parliament on July 9th: The friction-free movement of goods is the only way to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland and between Northern Ireland and Great Britain, and it is the only way to ...

Embed from Getty Images One of the most distinctive statements we have made in recent years has been that we are not afraid of coalition government; indeed we entered into one in 2010. Now the media see serious divisions in the two apparent monoliths who swap power between them, and ask whether the time is ripe for a new 'party of the centre'. Vince speaks often of a realignment of politics and implies that the Party could benefit significantly from such a seismic shift. Which begs the questions, in what way and with what objective? It has become clear that ...

BBC bashing is nothing new in Britain; it did not start with the vote to leave the European Union. For as long as I can remember, people have been complaining that the Beeb is biased in one way or another. I have usually taken this as evidence that the BBC is doing its job properly: if both left and right think you are playing for the other side, you are probably doing something right. As a result of this, I have dismissed a lot of the BBC-bashing coming from Remainers for a long time. However, I am starting to think ...

Embed from Getty Images Whilst enjoying listening to the county cricket commentaries I watched the news yesterday with half an eye. Hello – did they really just do that?.... ...I thought. Yes, the government dumped out a plethora of inconvenient announcements just as MPs packed their sandals and beach balls for the summer recess. (What West Wing viewers will know as "Take out the trash day") Most remarkably, Theresa May has delayed the repeal of the European Communities Act until 2020. This was the act which effectively took us into the EEC in 1972, as far as UK is concerned. ...

The (now digital-only) newspaper, The Independent, has come out in favour of a referendum on the Brexit deal. As its editorial says: Sovereignty rests with the people - the people should have the opportunity to finish what they began, to pause and consider whether they still want to go ahead with the Brexit course we're on, just as they would any other major decision in their lives... Like changing a baby, the process of a final deal referendum will be messy, but necessary. And much, much better than the alternative. Our politicians have hardly covered themselves in glory since the ...

Yesterday the newly-minted Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, Dominic Raab, appeared before the Brexit select committee. Brexit is dying and the UK is heading for a crunch point. There is no support in the House of Commons, or in the public for a No Deal Brexit, in the ensuing chaos, rationing, economic shock and national emergency which would follow in 2019. Yet this outcome is being sought by the sinister Right Wing Group ERG which has got hold of the Conservative Party. The Labour Party is under Jeremy Corbyn is planning for a hard brexit and hope they can use a no deal scenario to creep into power, because of the collapse of the May Government. ...

Thanks everyone for turning our last night. More than two hundred people crammed into the market square for a protest organised by the Chamber of Commerce. There were a huge variety of banners but they gave a consistent message. It's time for Shirehall to listen to us about parking charges. I hope he will hear the message from Ludlow and clear. DON'T KILL OUR TOWN CENTRE WITH PARKING CHARGES. We have been calling for four changes. No ...

There have been a lot of bizarre and sometimes disturbing admissions and revelations over the last two years regarding the Brexit shambles this government has created, but the extraordinary confirmation by Dominic Raab that the government is making plans to stockpile food in case the negotiations fail shows the extent of the mess we are in. As the Independent reports, the new Brexit secretary promised to ensure "there is adequate food supply" if the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal, telling MPs the task would be overseen by industry, rather than Whitehall, but he refused to go ...
