I was taken with this brick building on the main road in North Kilworth, and a helpful web page explains its history: The Ball family has worked in the village for nearly two centuries and in the 19th century set up the Royal Implement Works. This was a hive of industry employing over 50 people making carriages, carts, wagons, specialist vans and agricultural implements. Many of their goods went to the Royal estates at Sandringham and Windsor. That doesn't explain the sign for The House of Pain though.

"You need to comprehend how opposition to Corbyn has fractured into four groups: the Stay and Fighters; the Conscientious Objectors; the Brexit Firsters and the Policy Platformers." Stephen Bush, concludes that a Labour split is inevitable. Meanwhile, John Rentoul argues that the Labour leader ran a brilliant campaign last year but won't be able to repeat it. Let's blow up all the hospitals, says Kim Bellard. Tanvi Misra on the renaissance of adventure playgrounds: "Trying to build a playground with the goal of removing uncertainty altogether is not only futile, it's also counterproductive, and removes the potential for teaching kids ...

Second paragraph of third chapter: The comrade colonel laughs uneasily. He's forty-three and still slim and boyish-looking, but carries a quiet melancholy around with him like his own personal storm cloud. "I was very busy all the time," he says with a self-deprecating little shrug. "I didn't have time to pay attention to myself. One orbit, it only lasted ninety minutes, what did you expect? If you really want to know, Gherman's the man to ask. He had more time." It's 1976, and fourteen years ago, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the entire planet Earth and all its inhabitants were ...

Tick, tick, tick ...

In another twelve days I'll be checking into the haematology ward at Nottingham City Hospital. There will be another week of intensive chemotherapy, with my stem cell transplant scheduled for 13th September – hence my blog's countdown clock. It will be my re-birthday. I wonder if I will get presents and a party? Tick, tick, tick ... I've recovered well ... The post Tick, tick, tick ... appeared first on ten pence piece.

In case you haven't heard, Jamie Oliver caused outrage amongst many people in the British Caribbean community by calling his latest rice product "jerk rice." How could something as innocent as rice cause so much offence? Well the problem is Oliver's rice meets none of the necessary criteria for being a "jerk product." In fact since you have to barbeque something for it to be described as jerk, "jerk rice" can't be a thing. 'But why does this matter?' 'Dawn Butler is talking nonsense.' 'There is no such thing as cultural appropriation, it's a lefty concoction.', these are the sorts ...

Having been in transit the last few days at a hectic pace, travelling from Germany to France to Luxembourg to Belgium to France again, I mostly heard about Corbyn's speech in Edinburgh on the topic of the future of the British press through Twitter. Having proven an unreliable news source, I wanted to read the whole speech; I found the full text on Labour's website this morning. Here's what I think. I'll start with the positives. His pointing out of the fact that the British media is owned by too few people is one worth making. He's also correct that ...

From the BBC report of yesterday's council by-election at Gotham in Nottinghamshire: Before the counting took place last night at the Gotham Memorial Village Hall, the returning officer announced a duck had visited one of the polling stations that day and "defecated on the floor".

Towards the end of this week's Monday Guardian column on economic affairs Larry Elliott wrote: It is no real defence for those who so avidly embraced austerity to point to the return of growth as evidence that they were right all along. All economies recover eventually: the question is whether a less damaging approach could have been adopted, to which the answer is yes . . . As it is, extensive and permanent damage has been done. First there is the social cost of a decade of failed austerity: the closed libraries, the mothballed care centres, the increase in the ...

Another Thursday, another unlikely result... Watton-at-Stone (East Hertfordshire) result: LDEM: 67.0% (+67.0) CON: 30.1% (-36.4) LAB: 2.9% (-8.3) LDem GAIN from Con. No UKIP (-14.7) and Grn (-7.7) as prev. — Britain Elects (@britainelects) August 23, 2018 We ran candidates in Gotham, Rushcliffe, where Jason Billin scored 7.2%, and in Halewood South, Knowsley, where Jenny McNeilis tallied 6%. Those results might not look exciting, but running candidates tells the public that we're still out there, so many thanks to both of them for doing the honours. Finally, no candidate in the North Warwickshire ward of Newton Regis and Warton, although ...

I've been trying to get a better understanding of Jeremy Corbyn and his followers who idolise him so much. By chance my good friend Bob sent me this link to an article about him and wider UK/USA political matters. It comes from an American perspective and its a very long read indeed, but it is one of the best insights into what Corbynism is all about that I have come across:- Yes I know, if you have read it by now, some of the points are a little odd from a UK perspective. A Radical, for example, in British ...

If anybody was under the delusion that Labour's problem with anti-Semites was because of infiltration by undesirables, or even a misunderstanding born of crass insensitivity on the part of the party hierarchy, then the revelation of an historic faux pas yesterday should have disabused them. The problem is neither of these things. The problem is Jeremy Corbyn himself. As The Times reports, a leading Jewish charity has accused the Labour leader of "unambiguous anti-Semitic hate" after he was caught on camera telling a pro-Palestinian event that Zionists in Britain "don't understand English irony". It is a speech that appears to ...

I arrived in the UK just over eleven years ago from Brazil, eager and ready to build my career and life many thousands of miles away from home. Fast forward to 2018 and I have just received in the post my first British passport. Hooray? Yes, hooray now, but even though I was lucky enough to first "enter" the UK immigration system in pre-"hostile environment" times, the journey from being a Brazilian citizen to a British one hasn't been easy. There were the exorbitant fees – for a spousal visa, indefinite leave to remain, and finally citizenship – the intrusive ...

It's Monday once again, and time to introduce another day of general stuff! * checks diary * Oh, it's Friday. * looks around * Yes, it's summer, and whilst Caron is off having a thoroughly deserved holiday, the rest of us are minding the shop. That means that normal service... isn't. So, bear with me as I step in for the day. Yesterday saw the release of the first set of Brexit technical notices, advising of various impacts in the event of no deal. And, in terms of reassurance, they didn't offer as much as Dominic Raab might have thought. ...
