Responding to reports alleging that missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi recorded his killing on an Apple watch, Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable said: "While we must not be quick to judge, the weight of evidence against the Saudi Arabia regime has become too great to ignore. "I commend the likes of Sir Richard Branson for putting what is right before profit and freezing certain business ties with the country. "The Conservatives must follow suit and cut back on very heavy and dangerous trade and security reliance on Saudi Arabia, until the regime gives answers on what happened. "If Britain can ...

The disappearance and possible murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has taken on an added disquieting significance with claims in the Turkish media that either his smart-watch or phone recorded him being questioned and tortured in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, to which he had gone for formalities ahead of his forthcoming marriage to a [...]

PRESS RELEASE Immediate 13 October 2018 A statement from Helen Belcher regarding the Comment Awards 2018: "I was asked to be one of the judges at this year's Comment Awards. Party President Sal Brinton has told members at the North West Regional Conference this morning that the Federal Board will discuss whether there should be a special Conference to decide on Vince Cable's proposals for Party Reform. There are two that require a change in the Federal Constitution. The first is the idea that any registered supporters would get a vote for party leader and the other is that the leadership would be open to someone who isn't a member of the Westminster Parliament. The supporters' scheme itself doesn't need the authority of Conference to set it up – that ...

Voting time in Belgium

Municipal elections take place every six years in Belgium - an unusually long term by European standards (though NB Irish local councils had seven-year terms in 1960-67 and 1967-74, and an eight-year term from 1934 to 1942). The appointed day is actually tomorrow - very sensibly, Belgians vote on Sundays, between 8am and 3pm; voting is compulsory, unless you have a good excuse. Non-Belgians who have taken the trouble to enrol on the electoral register must also vote. (We have been Belgian since 2008 anyway.) In our commune, there are 21 local councillors, and five parties are standing full lists ...

I have a very simple response to the proposals by a "leader" who got the job without actually being elected by the members of the party, and who is now trying to ensure that party members never again get to ... Continue reading →

It has been a tough few days for me at the end of the week. When the UK Supreme Court ruling was made, on International Day for Mental Health Awareness of all days, it was tough mentally to go along with the tough time I've been having physically returning to work after a long time off with sciatica. It wasn't so much the fact that this time the opinion went in the favour of the McArthur family who run Ashers it was the comments, "celebrations", attack on the Equality Commission and everything else. What was worse is that many of ...

The Liverpool Echo has the story on its web site – see link below:- Any politician who lived through the Merseytram fiasco (I did) must wince when they hear that there could be plans to reintroduce modern streetcars on the Wirral. Merseytram was Merseyside politicians shooting themselves in both feet! But hey lets try to be positive as streetcars/trams/light rail are the future for urban transportation especially over shortish routes and I'm a fan of them having recently experienced the excellent NET tram system that runs in and around Nottingham. A Nottingham NET Tram at the Phoenix Park terminus. ...

One aspect of the debate in the Liberal Democrats about how much the party's messaging should rest on Brexit is the question of south west England. It's a region that in the past has elected many Lib Dem MPs and councils, yet also one with strong areas of support for Brexit. Ward and constituency breakdown of European referendum resultsBoth detailed ward-by-ward and constituency level results for the June 2016 European referendum are now available, using a mix of actual data and careful modelling to fill in the gaps. more Across the region as a whole, the Remain vote at the ...

Boris Johnson seems to be rarely out of the news. Whether it is his comments about the burka or taking part in a photo opp mocking Theresa May's running through fields of corn – there seems an insatiable media interest in him. And if he puts forward a proposal, such as building a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland, his comments are extensively reported, irrespective of how feasible the policy is. His treatment by the media is unlike almost any other politician, past or present. His profile, combined with his immense ambition, has even fed speculation that he will one ...
