Nothing for you today, I'm afraid, but, as I've been to see 'A Star is Born' this evening, I thought that I'd offer you a little video from the soundtrack...

Liberal Democrats in Cheadle, the former constituency of Mark Hunter and before him Patsy Calton, have selected Tom Morrison as their new Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC). Cheadle is one the most marginal seats between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, with only 4,507 separating the two parties in 2017. The seat previously saw a nail-bitingly close victory for Patsy Calton by just 33 votes in 2001. The Liberal Democrats hold the most council seats in the constituency, with nine councillors representing the areas of Cheadle & Gatley, Cheadle Hulme North and South and Stepping Hill. Speaking after his selection, Tom Morrison ...

High Bridge and the Glory Hole, Lincoln A.G. Macdonell is remembered today, it at all, for his book England Their England and its description of a village cricket match. An old post on Lion & Unicorn (retweeted today because Macdonell was born on 3 November 1895) shows that there was far more to him than that. In particular, he was a Liberal and twice fought Lincoln for the party at general elections: He was also involved in political campaigning at home, standing as the Liberal Party candidate in Lincoln in the general elections of 1923 and 1924. The seat had ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:Moon suspected that Stone could have easily made twice the distance, but he seemed content to glide along at Moon's fastest pace. Moon was just glad Stone didn't press to go faster; he was used to spending most of the day as a groundling, and it had been more than half a turn since he had stayed in his other form so long, or flown this far at one time. By afternoon, his back ached as if he had been hauling rocks all day. At least it distracted him from thinking about the Cordans. Every thought ...

Responding to the claims from a senior police officer that children as young as nine are being caught carrying knives, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson Ed Davey said: "It is heart-breaking that the epidemic of violent crime is claiming the lives of so many children. "We urgently need more police officers on our streets to restore the community policing that helps to prevent violent crime. That's why the Liberal Democrats are demanding an extra £300 million a year for the police. "But we also need to tackle the root causes of this epidemic to stop it spreading in our communities. ...

The free to download ebook version of Sustainable Energy — without the hot air was issued on the 3rd of November 2008. Ten years have passed since this important and influential science based look at sustainable energy was published. I am sure that if it was not for the early death of David MacKay, he would have built upon this achievement and updated and evolved his position. There have been calls for a collective effort to keep this book up to date, notably from Chris Goodall. This has not gained very much traction but books do tend to need a ...

When I first started working for the BBC World Service in the early 1980s, the name Oleg Gordievskh resonated round Bush House. He was the senior KGB operative who became disenchanted with the brutal reality of the Soviet Union, as well as of his own organisation, so became a mole for British intelligence. It would [...]

I blogged only last month about a report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which warns that global carbon dioxide emissions must almost halve within 12 years to avoid a catastrophic loss of coral reefs and Arctic ice, intense floods and droughts. Unfortunately, not many of the key world economies are taking this issue too seriously. Of the major economies, Russia, the USA, Brazil and Australia are amongst those whose governments are sceptical about manmade climate change or who are or will be pursuing policies that may make it worse. This is even more concerning of course when ...

This Budget has meant that local government is going to be taking even more of a hit in England. In Scotland, too, councils bear the brunt of SNP cuts. A Lib Dem Councillor in Edinburgh, Robert Aldridge, who, for five years from 2007-12 was the city's finance convener, has written an article for the Edinburgh Evening News about what a total mess the Labour/SNP coalition is making of running Scotland's capital. Their cuts have not been done in a strategic way and, in fact, generate more costs in the future: He set out the problems: As the scale of council ...
