That's the headline on a new poll finding reported by The Sunday Times: Labour would fall behind the Liberal Democrats in the polls if Jeremy Corbyn helps the Tories to secure Brexit, according to a huge new poll. The YouGov survey of 5,000 voters, commissioned by the People's Vote campaign, shows that support for Labour could fall from 36% to 22% if they helped the Tories to pass a compromise deal with Brussels like the one advocated by Theresa May. Under those circumstances, the Lib Dems would soar from 10% to 26% — their highest rating in any poll since ...

She followed the Tory Nancy Astor as the second woman to take her seat in the House of Commons." Stephen Williams celebrates a near century of women Liberal and Liberal Democrat MPs. "The Institute for Public Policy Research reports that public spending in the south has risen by £3.2bn since 2010, against a fall of £6.3bn in the north." Simon Jenkins says the extra billions announced for Crossrail emphasise Britain's north-south divide. Owen Bennett-Jones looks at Auntie's many problems: ...

There's a remarkable story on The Times website this evening, reporting the findings of a new opinion poll on Brexit: The YouGov survey of 5,000 voters, commissioned by the People's Vote campaign, shows that support for Labour could fall from 36% to 22% if they helped the Tories to pass a compromise deal with Brussels like the one advocated by Theresa May. Under those circumstances, the Lib Dems would soar from 10% to 26% - their highest rating in any poll since they entered coalition government with the Tories in 2010. The poll shows that Labour's supporters want a People's ...

First it was UKIP being asked to repay money to the European Parliament, now a European conservative group co-founded by the Tories and led by Brexit campaigner and MEP Daniel Hannan has been asked to repay more than half a million euros of EU funds following an investigation into their spending. The Guardian reports that in a rare negative finding touching a British political party in government, European parliament senior leaders on Monday night ordered the Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe (Acre) to repay €535,609 (£484,360) of EU funds. They add that the group will be denied a ...

Reducing inequality is something that all politicians even Conservatives say they are in favour of. They even produce figures to try and demonstrate that government measures are having a positive effect. The reality, of course, is that over the last forty years or so inequality has got worse particularly in economic terms. Wealth gives access to things like better quality health and education leading on to employment opportunities that the poorer in our society can only dream of. This is combined with a trend since the Thatcher years of a decline in access to things like relatively well-paying jobs and ...

News from Robert Smith's former constituency with the selection of John Waddell in the formerly held seat of West Aberdeenshire & Kincardine. Robert Smith was the seat's MP for 18 years until 2015. The seat is also mainly the successor to Kincardine and Deeside following boundary changes. It was best known to the political world for a by-election in which Nicol Stephen was elected to Parliament and best known to me for the first time I went campaigning on polling day. And apologies for taking 27 years to thank you, Willie Rennie, but your cheerful and welcoming face at by-election ...

Shropshire Council has been flirting with plans to licence every A-Board in the county. Those ideas didn't get through the Place Overview Committee yesterday. Everyone agreed that a licencing and charging scheme was the wrong approach. Instead, the committee asked officers to work with local councillors and communities to draw up clearer guidance on where A-Boards can be placed to ensure safety of pavement users, including those with limited mobility and visual impairment. We agreed it would more effective for responsibility for "policing" of A-Boards should be devolved from Shropshire Council to town councils. This is good news. Shropshire Council ...

December 2018 marks the centenary of women being able to stand for election to Parliament. The Parliament (Qualification of Women) Act was passed just a few weeks before the general election held on 14th December 1918 so only sixteen women candidates stood. Three years later the first Liberal woman MP was elected. Margaret Wintringham was [...]
