Cable: PM fast becoming most irresponsible politician ever Responding to confirmation the Prime Minister has delayed her meaninful vote on Brexit, Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable said: Theresa May is fast climbing the league table of the most irresponsible politicians our country has ever had. Kicking the can down the road will only heighten fears and anxiety of businesses and people right across the UK. MPs must this week rule out a damaging Brexit and then urgently bring this mess to an end with a People's Vote, including the option to stay in the EU.

Found in a wallet of prints from the 1990s. As you can see if you look closely, this sign is to be found just outside Much Wenlock.

I filmed this at our envelope stuffing party in the Lib Dem office in Consett today. While putting letters into envelopes is something of a dull task, put a bunch of people together to do the job and somehow it becomes quite fun!

More envelope stuffing!

Another Sunday and another day of putting letters into envelopes. A group of Lib Dems from Gateshead ventured to the office in Consett and sorted the letters for three wards: Whickham South and Sunniside, Dunston Hill and Whickham East and Low Fell. We got through more than we expected so we've had to stand down (for the moment) the people waiting to do the remaining envelopes. All we have to

How should the Liberal Democrats react to the creation of The Independent Group and MPs leaving both Labour and the Conservatives? That's what the latest Liberal Democrat Newswire survey is about. You can take part in the survey here.

In his speech to the Scottish Liberal Democrats' conference yesterday, their leader Willie Rennie said: "I offer the hand of friendship to those who believe our country can do better than this. People who have given up on the Conservative and Labour leaderships. People who are craving change. "Leaving your party after many years is hard. It is a risk. I get that. To those in parliament and across the country who have taken those first, bold steps I am full of admiration. To those in Scotland yet to decide - you know who you are."A report in The Herald ...

Measuring time is a complicated thing. Computers, banks, and stock markets in Denmark all use UTC, the international standard: but according to the law, they shouldn't.

When in Rome...

I was fortunate enough to be invited to give a lecture in Rome a couple of weeks ago, and made it into a long Valentine's Day weekend with Anne. I was speaking to students of the University of Washington in the Palazzo Pio near Campo de'Fiori. The building itself in 15th century, remodelled in the 17th century, but it incorporates parts of the temple of Venus Victrix built by Pompey as part of his theatre in 55 BC. Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC at the other end of the building complex, ten minutes' walk away. So it was ...

Here, in full, is Willie Rennie's speech to Scottish Conference: .@willie_rennie warns Brexit won't be over on the 29th March. He tells #sldconf "We can break out of this stalemate by letting the people decide. That would be what democracy is actually for. History has its eyes on us. We need a people's vote, the country needs a #peoplesvote" pic.twitter.com/yogqwEjrvV — Lib Dem Press Office (@LibDemPress) February 23, 2019 My elder son has left home and has started his career as a lighting engineer in concert halls and theatres. So when I told him ... I had a big part ...

This reached number 1 in the UK singles chart in February 1975. Like the early Queen singles, it sounded witty and agile when against the background of galumphing glam rock. And, like Ian Hunter's before him, Harley's vocal style points the way to punk.

The Sunday Times has an article today (£) in which a highly worrying quote is attributed to Norman Lamb: I want to be part of this movement. This is an opportunity that cannot be missed. We have to play our cards in giving it its best chance of succeeding. Is he about to join TIG? Well, I'd love to know what he was asked and in what context. By movement, he could mean the general prospect of this leading to a massive realignment of politics. He could be talking about the movement that this party's strategy wants to drive. Norman ...

Whatever one's views about the request of Shamima Begum to return to the UK, there are some legitimate questions to be asked about the response of Sajid Javid in effectively rendering her stateless to prevent her re-entering the country. The first of course revolves around the legality of the decision, and whether it sets a precedent for the future. As I understand the law, the UK Government does have the right to remove British citizenship from an individual and has done so 150 times since 2010, but that only applies if they have dual citizenship. It may well be that ...

The internet's big talking point this weekend is that in so many ways the world is built around men, because somebody has written a book about it, and apparently this is news to a lot of people. Presumably people who haven't heard the discourse around pockets the last few years1. A lot of the discussion is about the heights of things2 because this is an easily observable thing that we can all see and notice without much effort. Certainly when I worked in pubs, as a 5'1/4" person, the fact that the bar, the work surfaces in the kitchen, the ...

The 133 bus route (currently operated by Comfy Bus) links a number of small communities (Melling Mount, Sefton Village, Lunt Village & Homer Green) with larger places such as Kirkby, Maghull (and its new North Station), Thornton and Waterloo. It's been running for many years (probably since the withdrawal of the former Ribble buses 381 and 382 many moons ago?). But it seems things are going to change and sadly not for the better. Merseytravel have issued a new invitation to tender for this subsidised route to be operated (Monday to Saturday) from this coming April. The 133 does not ...

The main hall in the Town House in the South Lanarkshire Town of Hamilton was the room where it happened this weekend (see what I did there?). The song from the musical Hamilton tells us to "Talk less, smile more" but there was actually a lot of both this weekend as Scottish Liberal Democrats gathered for Conference. I have to admit, I was sceptical about this new venue and the hour I spent dragging my suitcase round empty streets in the dark on Thursday night trying to find the hotel did not improve my mood. One of our number overhead ...
