It's a sign of just how much both the Conservatives and Labour are flailing about at the moment that the latest polling from YouGov gives the Liberal Democrats better net ratings than either of those parties.

"If Theresa May were the head of a newly liberated African colony in the 1950s, British conservatives would have been pointing, half-ruefully, half-gleefully, in her direction and saying "See? Told you so - they just weren't ready to rule themselves." Fintan O'Toole casts a cold eye on events at Westminster. Lewis Goodall weighs Theresa May's performance: "She has reacted not with humility or contrition or openness, but with a tone so lecturing and hubristic that many MPs have thought her deeply arrogant." Mark Mazower reviews two books on the Armenian genocide. Marcus Binney makes the case for saving Richmond House ...

I am becoming intrigued by the treatment of children and bombsites in British films. In Ealing's Hue and Cry (1947), a damaged London belongs to errand boys and the film celebrates their independence and resourcefulness. In Mandy (1952), the final scene of liberation, where the little deaf girl goes out to play with other children, takes place on a bombsite. Last night I watched Passport to Pimlico (1949) last night and it proved a little more equivocal. The local bobby visits a woman whose husband is always making models. "It's an idea for that dump out there," she tells him, ...

Scott Walker (1943-2019)

A sad thing about growing older is that your heroes die off one by one and you are too cynical or set in your ways to replace them. Scott Walker had always been there, as far as I am concerned, because I cannot remember a time when I did not know the great Walker Brothers singles Make it Easy on Yourself and The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore) and his golden voice. Later I discovered his peerless solo career in the late Sixties, when his albums mixed Jacques Brel songs with his own compositions. Before all that he had been ...

In our fight for an Exit from Brexit, British liberals have been denied the opportunity to fight for a renewed and more liberal Europe. Since the Brexit Referendum, the raison d'être for British liberals has been to remain in the European Union. We have been pulling out all the stops to avoid a hard-Brexit, maintaining and improving the security, prosperity and opportunities brought by our membership of the world's single market and customs union. But Europe is the future, and it is European Liberals who will be the real change makers of the next European mandate. Let's look to European ...

The medical profession has always been staunchly opposed to Brexit. Even before the 2016 referendum the British Medical Journal predicted dire consequences, and whilst the pro-European tone was slightly subdued in the immediate aftermath, criticism has become more vehement as the process dragged on. Last week the BMJ reported on a meeting of 150 doctors in Belfast who found "little to feel positive about", not least the bizarre prospect of emergency ambulances being stopped when they crossed a hard border. A leading article (pictured) considered the plight of EU-qualified doctors who comprise almost 10% of our medical workforce, but longer ...

I have been reading the Economist regularly since 1974. I would find it hard to live without it. But I'm generally disappointed with the modern paper: its analysis lacks penetration, and its default setting is a mediocre version of neoliberalism with a few softened edges. But one of its regular columns stands out: Free Exchange. ... Continue reading Modern Monetary Theory: a silver bullet for the left?

Equality is an easy word to comprehend but sometimes not an easy word to live-by. Treating people equally should be something that is second nature but the truth is that we fail to do this in every day life. Many of us think we succeed in this but the reality is we only succeed in this to varying degrees. On Saturday night Layla Moran tweeted out a story about how she'd once been charged with domestic abuse for slapping her then partner. The charges were subsequently dropped. You can read the full version of events in this embedded tweet. Hi ...

The Conservative Party would like us to believe that, in stark contrast with Labour and anti-Semitism, they are dealing with their Islamophobia problem, however the reality is very different. The Guardian reports that more than a dozen Conservative councillors who were suspended over posting Islamophobic or racist content online - with some describing Saudis as "sand peasants" and sharing material comparing Asian people to dogs - have had their membership quietly reinstated: The chairman of the Conservative Muslim Forum, Mohammed Amin, called on the party to publish a set of formal disciplinary processes after the Guardian found 15 examples of ...

In the summer of 2016, if you'd asked me how likely was the chance that in the end we wouldn't leave the EU, I would have said very, very, very low. Like, asteroid hitting the Earth and wiping out all life in Earth in the next week level of statistically unlikely. The Leavers had won a referendum and basically had control of the leaderships of the two main parties. I couldn't see how from there we could end up not leaving the European Union. Since then, the Brexiteers have made unforced error after unforced error, weakening their hand slowly but ...

North Western Hotel – Liverpool I stumbled across Waterhouse almost by chance having photographed a couple of the buildings he had a hand in – Rochdale Town Hall and Nottingham's Prudential building – little did I realise that this prolific and famed architect was a son of Aigburth, Liverpool. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about him:- And here are my shots of Rochdale Town Hall and Nottingham's Prudential Building (warning the Nottingham shot includes the statue of a very unpopular man in Liverpool!) :- Waterhouse designed the Tower after the original one was destroyed. Liberal Democrats for Seekers of Sanctuary held a joint fringe meeting at Lib Dem Conference in York with Social and Liberal Forum, addressing the Immigration Bill currently being debated in Parliament. Ed Davey MP spoke of some of the impact that Brexit would have on immigration issues, and how he was using some of the new Lib Dem policies in the debates around the Bill. Only some amendments would be allowed, those that fit in with the "Long title" of the Bill, which ties it to European issues. Success on many of the amendments to the Bill will depend on ...
