From The Scotsman a couple of days ago: Britons travelling to the EU will no longer be able to carry meat and dairy products with them in the event of a no-deal Brexit, the European Commission warned. EU Customs Commissioner Pierre Muscovici said the risk of a no-deal Brexit and major disruption was increasing, and said customs checks would "apply to all goods arriving from the UK". Tourists would be prevented from carrying British cheeses and meats with them to the continent. This is a good reminder that, far from reducing red tape as its proponents imagine, Brexit would introduce a ...

Following my post about the impressive performance of Broxbourne Liberal Democrats when it comes to running far more candidates this May, I've had a pleasing range of feedback about other impressive increases in candidate numbers. In the same part of the country as Broxbourne, we've seen our candidate numbers in East Herts go up from 12 in 2015 to 26 this time round (out of a possible 50), and in Hertsmere from 7 to 17 (out of 39). I'm sure there's plenty more good news out there. So do share your news here... And remember to give thanks to all ...

Two years ago today, I posted about how the video announcing the 2017 Hugo final ballot was made on a rainy Saturday in Helsinki. Two years on, to the day, this is the story of the 2019 Hugo and 1944 Retro Hugo video, similarly shot in Dublin. If you haven't seen it yet, here it is: It's longer than the Helsinki video because we had more categories - 31 rather than 18, with the new Lodestar Award, a special category for Best Art Book, and 11 Retros. The concept is generally the same, but we made a number of technical ...

Eventually, after nearly eight hours of procedural wrangling by Tory peers, the Lords got down to the debate on the general principles of the Cooper Letwin Bill to avoid leaving the EU without a deal. The only Lib Dem peer to speak in the debate was Sarah Ludford who outlined the economic and health consequences of no deal and saw off some arguments from Tory Brexiteers. My Lords, I support the Bill and I thank the noble Lord, Lord Rooker, for taking up the mantle of introducing it in this House. I also thank Members of the other place, the ...

The Guardian reports that the information commissioner's office will use its legal powers to obtain information from Facebook about a secretive network of pro-Brexit advertising campaigns on the social network. The intervention follows revelations about the involvement of Sir Lynton Crosby's company in campaigns pushing for a hard no-deal Brexit. They say that the ICO will look at how any data, potentially including email addresses collected in the process of encouraging people to email their MP, is being handled. The Guardian revealed on Wednesday how a series of apparently grassroots advertising campaigns for a no-deal Brexit are secretly overseen by ...

Before the roof of the Commons chamber started leaking this week (something you couldn't make up), Ed Davey managed to make his speech in the backbench business debate calling on the Government to stop pursuing people for the Loan Charge, a retrospective income tax enforcement of a scheme that was legal at the time. Here's his speech in full including interventions. I apologise to the right hon. Member for Haltemprice and Howden (Mr Davis) for being the chair of an all-party group that has produced such a reasonable report. We did it because we wanted to be constructive and to ...

Welsh Liberal Democrats meet in Cardiff for their Spring Conference this weekend. They'll be discussing motions ranging from housing to mental health in schools, to citizenship lessons on the curriculum to clean air to the future of local government. Leader Jane Dodds will be making her keynote speech. She will criticise the fear and division dominating UK politics, reiterate the need for the people to be given the final say on Brexit and highlight the necessity of urgently taking every action to combat climate change. Here are some of the extracts: On the state of politics "Around the world we ...
